Wasn't Roger Starbach an early 80s quarterback? He's my favorite.:)

Roger Staubach was one of my faves, too (and a Hall of Famer). Strangely enough, his last game was a playoff game vs the L.A. Rams on Dec. 30, 1979. Roger & the 'Boys lost, so he never made it to play in the 80's.

Phil SImms, probably the TOUGHEST QB ever. I seen him take hits that would crumble buildings, and get up and not even look like he was touched.

Phil Simms RULES! GIANTS 86! What a team!

I had tough time picking between Marino and Elway, finally went with Marino. Nolan who did you pick?. I've always had a problem thinking that Montana was the greatest, my reasoning for this is that when Steve Young replaced Joe Montana his numbers were equal if not better than Montana's and I find think it may have been the team that made the quarterback. Why's Doug Williams on this list, except for one Superbowl, I think i may have been better than him myself j/k. To me the toughest quarterback of the 80's was Steve Grogan of the Partiots, it looked like he was being sacked about a dozen time a game.

I voted for "other" Neil Lomax of the Cardinals. But no, seriously, i Voted for Dan Marino.

Well, Cal, you outed me. :D I picked Montana, I admit it. Sure he had alot to work with, esp. in the late 80's, but he helped put the 49'ers on the map as a powerhouse in the NFL. Day in day out, he was not as good as an Elway or Marino, but in the big game he delivered. It is hard to argue with 4 Superbowl rings (tying Bradshaw) and 3 Superbowl MVP awards. Believe me, as a cowboys fan, it was hard for me to admit this. :)

That's a good question. I just wanted to have one guy on here that made people go, "Who?" Seriously, I'll admit he really doesn't have much to recommend him other than the '88 Superbowl. But the 'Skins were down 10-0, then scored 42 unanswered points (and beating Elway, BTW), earning Doug the MVP. Probably not enough to earn his way onto this poll, but I wanted one more. :D Again, as a Cowboys fan, hard stuff for me to admit. ;)

IN all fairness to Doug Williams, he did spend the vast majority of his career with Tampa Bay, back when they were worse than most Division II college teams.

Oops! Sorry, I hope I didn't ruin your poll. That's what happens when you let a girlie girl into the clubhouse! :p

I'll take Montana, but Elway is close, and if he'd had teams with more talent, he'd probably be #1.

Not at all! I had to look that up myself to be sure. You can hang out here anytime as far as I'm concerned (& I'm moderating this forum, so what I say goes! :D) Thanks for bringing up memories of Staubach, I idolized him when I was a kid.
Isn't it weird though that his last game was only two days shy of the 80's? Wow!

That is weird Nolan. I was talking to my brother about this yesterday. He raised me to be a Cowboys fan. :p My brother is sort of fed up with the Cowboys now though, that's pretty major for him. He has loved them for 30 years. He is looking into becoming a Texans fan... we'll see.

Well I voted Montana although I suppose on reflection my fav would be Elway; Trixter are you reading this? :) but the Broncos lost 4(?) superbowls in the 80's so I just couldnt say he was greater than Montana

Dan Fouts was my favorite, though Joe Montana got the championships!

Actually Greenway, in a weird sort of way you've jigged my mind a bit! :D

My favourite QB of the 80's would probably be Jim Plunkett!

Go the Silver and Black!

Ah yes....I've been down this road many times before. My pick is Dan Marino, hands down, no contest. The rationale follows:

Montana and Elway always had "teams" around them. Elway had the "Orange Crush" defense and a decent running game. Montana had a stifling 49er defense, and Roger Craig & Tom Rathman to keep opposiong defenses honest.

Marino had nothing. No running game, no defense, nothing. Opposing defenses knew he was going to pass on almost every down, and they still could not stop him. The play action pass was non-existant with no running game. There was no way to fool the defense. Dan just came out with both guns blazing, and for the most part no one could beat him. How many games did he have to win 45-42 or some ridiculous score like that? Had Marino had a defense like the Dolphins have now, they would have been unbeatable.

Elway was a great QB, but he owes both his rings to Terrell Davis. Montana was great also, but had an outstanding team around him. Think about it.....Steve Young absolutely SUCKED when he was in Tampa Bay, then goes on to win two rings with the Niners. Grbac excelled with them also. It was the supporting cast and the system which made them greater. I'm not taking anything away from Montana, but as a pure QB, Marino was better.

The best of all time, not just the 80's? Would have to be a toss-up between Marino and Johnny Unitas.

I went with Dan Marino. He was one of my first "hero's" as a young kid. I was very excited that the Vikings were trying to get him up here when he was retiring, to no avail. It probably worked out better for him that he retired...like he needed to come to another team that can't quite make it to the big game!

Montana over Marino, but only because Montana has the rings to show for it. Marino was a brilliant QB and a tremendous athlete. If only he'd had a team then he would have been my pick.

I have been a Marino fan since the 80's. He has always been my favorite. I feel he is one of the best quarterbacks the NFL has ever had.

Joe Theisman ;)

No matter how many times I see that clip of his career ending injury~~ I cringe :ill:
