View Full Version : Reality Shows: Love Them Or Are You Sick Of Them?

With the ongoing boom of reality shows out there with everything from boot camp, to being the last one standing on an island, to marrying a complete stranger, one ponders what is such a fascination with these shows. So, what I want to know is where you stand on this subject. Are you one that just can't get enough of them? Are you possibly the one that will turn the channel when they come on because you can't stand the sight of another reality show?

Personally, I am tired of them. They were fun at first, but now they just seem to be becoming repetitious. The networks need to find something new and innovative for TV again.

I need an 'indifferent' option... I've only watched 3 of those type of things....Real World 3, the first season of Survivor and that one where like 4 or 5 chicks are chained to one guy....Chains of Love I think it was called...if that even classifies...only watched the pilot :p

They've never really held my interest, so I don't love 'em or hate 'em...I just don't care  ;)

The only one I really watch is Big Brother, I started watching Survivor last year, but got bored with it very quickly.

I like Big Brother because it surprises me that so many people really believe that they will win the show, if I were on the show, there's no way I'd have that confidence about myself, sure some people will have better odds of winning than others, but I think it's just arrogant to go in from teh first week and consider yourself as the only possible winner, it makes it more pleasurable seeing them get voted off.

In the beginning, I thought that they were an interesting diversion. But now they are scraping the bottom of the barrel, with some lowbrow entertainment as The Bachelor and Temptation Island. Doesn't interest me any longer....

Ooops! right....I forgot about Big Brother. I watched that first season up until the cute chick with the colored hair was kicked out...

When the first Big Brother came on I really got into that. Currently all I like is The Osbournes. I never could get into Survivor and those other shows.

I am sick of them, but if you count The Osbournes as a reality show, I love that one. Not that I watch MTV a lot or anything. ;)

I cannot stand these so-called "reality" shows! :( They are boring and lack ingenuity! A waste of airtime!

I still enjoy them, but it all depends on the show. Some I will just not bother too watch because I know they would just piss me off.

I don't really like them. I've never watched a single episode of Survivor in my life. :p I was a big fan of Real World Hawaii though. :)

I watched the first survivor, The first 3 real worlds and once in awhile I will watch ozzy babble incoherently on the osbournes but thats all I have watched on reality shows, too many of them.

I am somewhere in between. I watched some of the first Survivor. Now I don't like it. I did get into The Bachelor toward the end. I turned it on because nothing else was on and accidentaly got hooked. Those are the only ones I can remember watching. I do really like all the dating shows. They are sort of like reality shows. Shipmates and Blind Date rock!:D

My first thought was "Just leave me alone with Reality shows". But then i saw someone mentioned "The Real World" and I have to admit, I saw parts of the London episodes. I never really got hooked on the American ones, but this guy in the The Real World in London was just too cute!

I knew that since I heard about that Jim Carrey movie then I saw "EDTV" that we'd start getting such shows. Lo and behold, now they're everywhere. I hate them all. Big Brother was just a stupid idea and Survivor even worse (I mean, our society is so out of tune to how to survive in the wild that we have to be paid in order to do it!). I thought Temptation Island was the lowest but they came up with the Bachelor. American TV.

Canada has a pathetic one called U8TV. At first I thought it was cool idea. It's was like Big Brother except the people could come and go as they wish but they had to report on certian issues be it serious or plain stupid. But boy the show sucks.

There is a reality show on PBS. It is fantastic. I can't remember the name of it. It is city people living on the frontier. They took families most of them with 2 or 3 kids and have them live as authentic to the old west as possible. I love watching this show. It is very interesting. The families have a pretty tuff time adapting. They have to live like this for 5 months. I think most anybody could get hooked on this show. It's not cheap and trashy either.

I know what your talking about.I've only seen one episode though because I never know when it's on!I can't remember the name of it either but I liked it wich is odd for me since I hate almost all reality shows but this was really good. The one I saw was when one family cheated and they traded food with the neighbors or someone and one of the daughters snuck in make-up.I'm SoooSure,do you know what day and time this show is on?I would really like to start watching more of it.

I watched that one too Angeleyes. That one poor family is totally make-up obsessed. I don't know how they'll survive! :p I don't know exactally what times or dates it's on. It has not been on where I live for a week because of the PBS fund raisers. If I find out more I'll definately let you know. Great show to catch.:)

A definate "NO" here. Watching only one episode of Big Brother proved for me that watching goldfish in a tank is actually more entertaining.

Besides, BB spawned more simply horrible reality shows (like "Girls Camp"...boy, those ladies there gave a complete new meaning to the term "dumb blondes") and a few singles from a number of participiants which made me wish I was born deaf. :D

I think they are way overdone. It's more "acting" than reality. I don't bother with them. :)

5-10-02, 07:59 PM
I don't like them. I've read where the producers, directors, etc. are involved in certain aspects of the show, such as food, transportation, etc. That aspect sort of ruins the "reality" of the show. Don't know how much of this is true since most of my info I read in the tabloids. I've seen a few reality shows--didn't like them.

which is why there are so many goldfish cams on the Internet! :D

There was one relaity show (well, not really) that was interesting. A group of scientists had to stay on an unknown island for a few days. Each were given a task according to their specialty. One had to figure out where they wer elocated, another had to build a radio, another had to make toothpaste, another a flag, etc. This island had an abandoned old prison so they had to use the materials scrapped from there. It was realy interersting-- they even had to build a record player to provide entertainment for dinner! Record provided (an 80s one).

Well, I voted "love them" but I'm really more of an "in between". I resisted all of them at first. Then, last year I got sucked into the last few shows of Survivor and Amazing Race. Soooooo, I watched both of these this year. Plus the last few episodes of The Bachelor. (I also watch the very first season of Road Rules.) I don't watch any of the other's though.

Basically I'm not a big fan of all the reality based shows, Yes I love survivor, and will watch it again in Sept, I liked the scond season of Big brother cause Will was evil and funny, I did watch The first season of the Amazing Race and the Mole and liked them. However I can't stand all the Fox or MTV reality based shows like forbidden island , tough enough, real world.... and i expect to get blasted by this, but personally, the Osbournes became a little boring to me towards the end, I love Ozzy, but I don't find the show as great as everyone else,

I don't hate them, but I quit watching them. So I can't vote, either. :( Sorry.

I did watch when they first started, and if I catch one every now and then, I'll take a peek. But for the most part, I am just sick to death of them.

7-22-02, 10:22 PM
I avoid them at first. Saw a bit of the first survivor and then didn't tune in at all for the second one. I got completely into The Amazing Race and that one is my favorite just because it is interesting to see how close people interact under pressure and its just so darn entertaining. :)

I started watching Survivor Africa about 6 episodes in because everyone at work was talking about it and I thought I'd at least know what they were talking about it... got totally sucked in to the passive entertainment and waited patiently for Marquesis which although was wayyyyy to religious for my taste was okay. I'd like to see Thailand. I don't expect a lot from them... I get my juicey thinking shows from Political shows.. these are just fluff... and most of you know how I can be with fluff :D

With the choices given it was kind of hard to answer because I like watching Big Brother, The Osbournes, and Fear Factor, but I never liked Survivor, Temptation Island, Real World, or any of the others.

LadyDi4476
7-23-02, 02:23 AM
I wouldn't have a problem with them if there weren't so damn many of these shows! It's like every day a new bunch crops up. It's too many and they aren't all that very good. My own personal fave is Fear Factor, cause I enjoy seeing how far these morons will go for 50,000. Aside from that, the rest are pretty standard fair and CANNOt take the place of a good family sitcom. It's a shame that this fad has caught on, but it will soon run it's course like all the rest.

oh and yeah I do like the Osbournes for being original. I hope it stays fresh like that and we don't see everyone coming out with their own show. I hear Liza may be doing one:rolleyes:

Not sure if I already posted on this or not...I don't care for most of the reality shows that are being shown these days. I did enjoy MURDER IN SMALL TOWN X. The best reality show (and it IS reality) is AMERICA'S MOST WANTED. In fact, I am reading a book right now by John Walsh called...NO MERCY.

Zel
7-27-02, 05:43 PM
Jana! I was totally into MURDER IN A SMALLTOWN X too! So is it true about the rumours or is it another urban legend. The guy that won was a New York Firefighter. There were rumours shortly after September 11th that he was one of the many heroes that lost their lives.

I watched the first two or three The Real Worlds (man, that was ages ago!). Now I catch the Osbournes if I happen to come across it while channel surfing. Other than that, I've never watched any of those Survivor, Big Brother, etc.

LOSTNTHE80S
7-28-02, 12:30 PM
As a followup..I did a search for MURDER IN SMALL TOWN X...Angel, the last surviving investigator, was born and raised in the Bronx and was a firefighter in the Chelsea district of NYC for seven years (when the show aired)..so maybe he was one of the firefighters on 9-11-01. I'll let you know if I find out anything else.

The only two I’ve ever watched were Fear Factor on an occasional basis and the first Surreal Life (Vince Niel, MC Hammer et. al.). Now, I can’t even stand watching commercials for reality shows. I think they bring out the disgusting side of human nature: backstabbing, being an egomaniac loudmouth, gossiping about people they are competing against on television. The funny thing is, while these people are rewarded for displaying this type of behavior; the real celebrities that actually have talent are blasted in magazines & shows like ET when they do that kind of stuff.

Sadly we have two 80’s phenomenon’s to blame for reality shows. MTV and all the Oprah copycats in the 80’s that made that genre even more of a spectacle in the 90’s like Jerry Springer, Jenny Jones and Maury Povich.

Well, I don't mind them. I have watched a few episodes of many of the different shows out there and find them so-so. I do wonder though....about reality. That's not my reality. And...no matter what they call a tv show (Reality) it's not. It's still constructed to make the audience feel something.

There are a few I like to watch. We do not have cable, I refuse to have a billion channels and thus produce 5 couch pototos, it's hard enough to raise kids...we have rabbit ears and 3 channels, that's all!! That said, the term 'reality' has NOTHING to do with these shows. The people are hand picked (not my reality) the settings are mostly georgous, have you ever seen less then perfect bodies on most of the 'reality' show contestants???? The so called dating shows "batchelor, batchelorette..ect" have so much fake 'romantic' moments, and not to mention a camera on everytime you try to get 'romantic' Whatever! :barf:

We watched the 1st Survivor and Big Brother a few years ago but after the 2nd seasons they lost it's thrill. The Osbournes we watched because we like Ozzy, but even that got stale after awhile. The Newlyweds, Nick and Jessica, come on, her dad produces the show, it's all staged... It's all for entertainment... To me, reality is what goes on when the cameras aren't rolling...
