Yes I smoke and have smoked since Iwas 14-15. I know it's a disgusting bad habit, I'd love to quit, but I don't have the will power.

Sarg

Yep, I smoke. I tried to quit a number of times over the years and failed. I started at about 17 or 18 years old and now I'm going to try again to stop because the price of cigarretts is relly getting expensive to keep the habit. I wish I knew a sure fire way to quit.

Non-smokers always say "just put them down and don't pick'em up again", but it's easier said than done.

Desperate times call for desperate measures...there is always some weed around which can be wrapped in banana leaves.

Yep, I´m smoking...tried several times to get rid of that habit, but like Sarg mentioned, it´s easier said than done. Besides, a good cigar can be very relaxing from time to time. ;)

Never have smoked. I can understand almost anything. Weed at least you get a buzz. Booze the same. Steal if you get away with it you get money. Gamble the same. But of all of the vices "what in the h@ll is the upside to smoking cigarettes?" I have never figured that one out.

When you get to Toronto this summer Cal we can have a couple of pints and I will be happy to join you in the smoking section :)

I've smoked since my mid/late teens. Haven't the desire yet to quit. I still enjoy it too much.

One day I'm sure I'll get the urge to quit and hopefully it won't be too late. But until that day....LOL

Yea, I've smoked since my early 20's. It the -only- unhealthy habit I have now (as I'm off the drink for eight months now), an so far I'm still in fair fit shape despite the smokes. Been tryin to quit on an off over the years - but right now quittin the smokes is on the back cause I'm still fightin to stay off the drink. But I plan to start quittin the smokes once I know I'm not in danger of jumpin off the wagon. One addiction at a time. ;)

I don't smoke. I tried once in high school and got really sick. I can't stand to be around it now!

Caligula, I think it's great that you want to quit smoking. I hope you give it a shot. My dad smoked when he was in the air force. He woke up one morning , said he was never going to smoke again and never did. I know it has to be hard though. Good luck if you decide to quit! :)

I have never smoked. My father is a chain smoker and I have a couple of friends who smoke and I'm really worried about second-hand smoke, so I sorta walk off when they light up. :)

Not quite smoke free yet Cal. Establishments must choose between classing themselves as "bars" or "restaurants".

A bar can have 25% of its floor space devoted to its smoking section. However, you are not allowed to have patrons under the age of 19 at any time.

A restaurant cannot have a smoking section but is allowed to have children/young adults inside.

It gets pretty convoluted so forgive me if I've made any mistakes here. But I'm pretty sure that this is the definitive word in T.O.

But managed to take a three months off the cigarettes last year - next time I'll go for six months and so on untill I feel really stupid starting again :D Damn expensive too - and funny enough I really dislike all the sideeffects such as stinking clothes, bad breath and...... ehm, cancer. Actually talking about it makes me wanna stop right now....... but it feels soo good

No, I always hated smoking and tried it once just to see what the fuss was about. I still don't know what the fuss is about.

So my question to all the smokers here, what IS the fuss about? :) Is it an acquired taste? To me it tasted disgusting and I had to down so many drinks to get the feeling out. It was a pretty funny scene :D

Then I tried a cigar to see why it was so trendy. Well, it does taste a lot better but I don't smoke them regularly. CAUGHT IN THE ACT! Maybe once or twice a year.

No, I quit. On November 21, 2000. 1 year, 5 months, 2 weeks, 4 days, and 12 1/2 hours ago. Not that I count the minutes or anything.

Sometimes I still miss it....and I dream that I smoke. But in my dreams, I only allow myself 2 cigarettes a week. If I could do that, I wouldn't have had to quit.

What is the appeal? For me it was peer pressure....and just about everyone I knew smoked. My father, my fiance (hubby now), all but two high school friends, everyone in my family except one sister (who now smokes - irony). But then it turns to an addiction, and you don't even realize it. Until you try quitting...

Sarg, I've tried Nicorette (worked for 3 1/2 weeks) and I'd reccommend it to you....but try to use less than they tell you. It gets so expensive if you don't, that you figure it'd be cheaper and more fun to just smoke. I quit cold turkey, though. My doctor told me that was the best way, because you have to have the willpower to refuse them and keep refusing them. ;)

I only smoke on my way to work, on the way home from work, after a good meal, after an "intimate encounter" and when I drink........so I guess I am a smoker......

The only time I have ever "quit" was when I was involved with a girl who didn't smoke (out of respect of course). My record is 2 months. I haven't found the inspiration to quit permanently.

Once I barf up a lung I'm sure I'll have no problem......

I use to smoke but the only reason was to loose weight. It really curved my appetite and made me want to puke all the time. I couldn't stomach it so I quit. That was about 3 years ago. I really don't have the urge to continue. Sometimes I do take a "drag" from a friend but later I regrett it because I start feeling sick the room will start to spin and I will just puke. !!!

I tried smoking at the age of about 14 or so. A group of us occasionally smoked when we went to see the Sydney Swans (an Australian Rules football team) play at the Sydney Cricket Ground. We were a bit pathetic though - each time the Swans scored a goal and we were sitting near the goal posts, we'd duck as we were convinced that as the TV camera swung around following the ball, our parents would see us as the news showed highlights of the Swans goals! I was never much good at it anyway. I never drew the smoke into my lungs. It did nothing for me. There was no peer pressure as my friends were pretty cool. I wanted to smoke with then, but I'd never game buy my own. We smoked what we refered to as "sterile" sticks - those menthol Alpines Yuk! But we were 14.....you have to try it then, don't you?.

Cal you can do it! I had a date of March 10th I just did it 5 days earlier for different reasons.

It was so hard. What I did may not work for you. Based on a phone call I decided that day I was going to quit. My friend and I went out drinking for the evening and we smoked our faces off and drank our faces off (funny how we say that - my face didn't go anywhere). The next day I did not want a cigarette, I didn't want to lift my head. Day 1 officially smoke free. Day 2 I cleaned the house from top to bottom. Drank a ton of water and went for a walk when ever I wanted a cigarette.

I don't know if I would recommend that but it worked. I also decided that no one smokes in our house for very good reasons. It stinks, its gross, our house doesn't smell like an ashtray anymore - funny febreeze is okay but when you are reformed smoker gag gag gag.

Funny smokers don't come visit us as often. Our kids smell wonderful. I had to put my leather jacket in a bad with tons of bounce sheets for about two months. And I have spending money!!!!! LOL

I dream about smoking all the time - cigarettes have replaced my faceless man

I'm holding off until July 8th, as thats when i return back from vacation, Since part of my vacation is at Wausega Beach where I'l be attending a big party (they will even have a 90 pound pig roasting on an open fire) and if i'm having a few drink my willpower is zero.

When I return home from Toronto, I will quit using the patch. I have tried and succeeded short term using this method before. I've also tried zyban, the gum , and cold turkey in the past but I find the patch is the best method.

I have actually quit before for periods of up to a couple of months, but this time even if I fail at first I'm gonna get right back on the horse and not just give up

My game plan is to use the patch, drink tons of water, not drink beer (as alcohol both lowers my willpower and makes me crave alcohol) and maybe try some of those breathing techniques. I also plan on being really cranky and difficult for an extended period .

Thanks for the warning! Feel free to come here and vent.;) Is there anything you can do instead of smoke when you have the craving? I have heard if you can get past the first I think it's 3 mins. of a cig. craving then you're ok. So, if you can find something to do for a few mins. everytime the craving hits it might help. I don't know, just a suggestion.

NO! HELL NO!!! It's just such a dirty smelly habit.. My husband (when we met) smoked and I wouldn't even talk to him.. he asked me why I wasn't interested and I told him that I didn't date smokers.. he quit right away ;) We've been together for over 8 years now, and he's never had the urge to smoke since then and finds it just as disgusting as I do.. when we go to a bar or to my parents house, (they smoke) we immediatly go home and take a shower and throw our clothes in the washer.. nothing worse than smelling it on your clothes and hair.
At my place of business NONE of our employees smoke.. (there are about 30 of us).. it's amazing... smokers are a dying breed.. (literally)...

This smoking this is such a SOCIAL issue.

I smoked as a teenager for 8 years. (I'm from NC, so you can guess that it was the culture)

But I have discovered there is NO REDEEMING VALUE to smoking. EVERYTHING about it is NOT GOOD. I could list everything but we all know the list.....

My mom died last year primarily due to Emphazema (sp) and the last 5 years of her life was she was on a portable respirator. Yes you all have seen those people on occassion with the rolling tank... and yes some of them are asthma patients, but I would venture to say the vast majority has to use them due to smoking cigarettes....

As Miagi told Daniel-son..... We all have to get back to the basics of life. Daniel-son said, "Prayer?" Miagi says, "NO, BREATHING" I LOVE a FULL LUNG of CLEAN AIR to BREATH...

and a special note to a VERY SPECIAL FRIEND... ONE DAY BG.. ONE DAY, WHY NOT TODAY??? I love ya :*

One final note.. for those smokers that want to quit.. keep this in mind... IT is VERY EASY to PROMISE YOURSELF ANYTHING "IN THE FUTURE"... as long as it is OUT there in the FUTURE.. its ok... but let me encourage ya... DO IT TODAY... I PROMISE . YOU WILL NEVER EVER REGRET IT!!!

I BELIEVE EACH ONE OF YOU CAN DO IT!!!! :) :yesnod:

Re-reading this thread made me think back to a little militant non-smoker outburst my Mom went through 15 years ago.

My Mom is one of the sweetest people I know. But she is a chain smoker. I smoke and I could NEVER catch up to her and I wouldn't want to. But if someone asks her not to smoke around her she is more than happy to oblige.

Anyway, My Mom and a few of her girlfriends were out at some fancy restauraunt (which had a rather large smoking section) to enjoy dinner and a few drinks. This Militant non-smoker comes up to my poor little mom (She's 4'10) and tosses a large steaming hotplate of food in her face! My Mom still has scars! The guy was arrested. I guess he was walking by the smoking section to use the mens room and he didn't like cigerette smoke. It wasn't just my Mom that was smoking EVERYONE was since it was the smoking section. My question is is that he should have asked her to put the butt out even though she was in the smoking section. What would you guy's have done? Sorry it's a bit long.

OMG, how horrible!!! That's just...horrible!!

As long as there's a smoking section, I don't think anyone has the right to ask smokers to stop smoking.

It's funny reading my original response to this post over 2 years ago. Oh how things have changed since then. I am a smoker now. No desire to quit yet - then again I am only 18, so I have some time.

I said I was going to quit when I was 18, 11 years later and It's a struggle. I know you don't want to hear this. But if you can quit do it. :) When you hit my (young ;) ) age it'll be 10 times harder.

I never smoked, but my father smoked and I have a lot of respirtory issues I had to deal with because of the second hand smoke. I dislike being around someone who does smoke, because I can't stand sigarette smoke. When I tell people to not smoke around me, they're usually nice and move away from me.

Virginia Slims 120 menthols is my poison. I've been smoking since I was 16.

I respect others around me though and won't light up if I can. I usually go outside to smoke.

BUT I am pissed off about them making bars a NO smoking area.

The government allows this them to sell this crap and yet bans us from using it. Thats f*cked up in my opinion.

I've been pretty much smoking like a chimney lately. Up until about a month ago, I used to ONLY smoke when I was out at a bar drinking & I would bum cigs off my friends. But....my life has been pretty stressful, I know that is NO excuse, but it helps take the edge off & I know it won't last long. I don't have an addictive personality, I'll stop when I feel like it. :p

I smoked for 22 years. Started the nasty little habit back when it was 'cool' and I was trying to impress an idiot, uh excuse me, I mean a boy. Can you believe that? I was so stupid as to believe that me smoking with him would make him like me! I woke up the morning of my 35th birthday and never picked another one up. I do not consider myself as 'quitted smoking'. You know how when an alcoholic no longer drinks, he is still an alcoholic? Well, for me, those smokes call my name. I am 'on the wagon'. I pray I stay there forever! My husband smokes and I deal with the smell and desire daily, which just makes my will power stronger, so, I think I will stay off the sticks forever more. :) Anyhow, as of this very minute here are my stats: 90 weeks, 1 day, 10 hours, 11 minutes, 49 seconds since quitting. 12,628 cigarettes not smoked. Around $1,262.80 saved.

No I have never smoked in my life and do not intend to ever do so. It is very unhealthy. My Fiance' smokes, however, he is in the processing of quitting. He is now smoking Ultra Lights. He smokes out on our porch, as I cannot take the smoke in our home. It gives me headaches and I don't want our 6 1/2 month old son getting sick. I'm proud of Bern for trying to quit and especially slowing his nicotine intake down. :)

Tried it when I was younger, didn't like anything about it, wasn't for me. My cousin smokes so much. Anytime we'd go to the house we leave reeking of smoke :yucky: Had to throw the clothes in the wash right away and jump in the shower because it was so bad. Haven't been to her house in awhile since we moved. She's been to ours a few times and she smokes outside. We have a rule absoultley no smoking in our house, cars or boat :tsk:

No i never smoked. I can't remember where i read it but apparently it's not very good for you and can actually make you ill.
I remember watching a programme about really bad inventions and one that stuck in my mind was a guy who wanted to make ciggies that didn't drop ash on the floor. So he came up with the idea of putting a string through the ciggie to hold it together. Obviously he needed a cord that wouldn't burn or the whole thing would be pointless, so he settled on asbestoes. :dammit:

I don't, but my wife does. I tried dipping while I was on my high school baseball team until I got sick on the ball field and my coach made me clean it up. Now keep in mind I played 3rd base, and when I felt myself getting sick I did it in the grass. My coach was upset that allot of the guys on the team were dipping so me made me grab a towel and wipe the grass "clean". That's all it took, just the smell of that stuff makes my sick.

I started smoking when a friend of mine taught me how to inhale and I got a "head rush." It felt really good, and I thought wow, I can feel like this all the time. What I didn't know is that once you start smoking on a regular basis the head rush feeling goes away and you get addicted quickly. I enjoy smoking and it calms my nerves. I have gone as long as 2 weeks without a smoke only to light up again. I know it is bad for me, but so are a lot of other things. I'll quit when I want to, if I ever want to. Until that day, I'll enjoy my smokes even without a head rush.

Unfortunately I do smoke and have on and off for 25 years, more on than off. I have tried quitting 3 times now and I'm going for my fourth and FINAL attempt on Jan.1st, 2006. I'm not quite ready yet, so I'm taking the next 8 monthes to psych myself up to quit. I know I'll finally beat my habit this time, it's just going to take ALOT of willpower on my part. Wish me luck !!!!!

I'm smoking right now. I know I need to quit, especially with both of my parents having emphysema, but it seems like when I'm trying to quit, something traumatic or stressful happens in my family and I wind up with another pack in my hands. Like a freakin' chimney. :smoky: I started "smoking" when I was 12, but you know I didn't inhale. I was stealing my mom's Virginia Slims (Um, not cool) and then bumming from the cool "wrong crowd." When I was 18 and could buy them I promised myself I would quit when they got to $3 a pack. That was a long time ago, I just spent $10 for 2 packs. Good Deal? I think not. :duh:
Anyway, I support smokers rights but never others to start. I too, love smoking and I am REALLY good at it! But, If I could go back in time, I certainly wouldn't start.

I started smoking in college, i got out of that and joined the Marine Corps, smoked until my 24th birthday, nearly four years ago i gave it up. One thing i didn't want to happen was seing myself do things that i would never do if it weren't for an addiction. I use to smoke 2 packs a day, if i can quit smoking anyone can. I used the patch that they issued at the hospital, yes the cheap brand ones, and they eventually worked after 3 months of trying.

I am not proud of the fact that I do but I do enjoy it. I started smoking about 4 years ago. You all are wondering why I started the answer is I don't know. Back then I was highly stressed out getting divorced and losing my house. Things are much better now but I never kicked the habit. I get grief from 12 year old daughter about everytime she sees one in my mouth. I understand her concerns.

In high school I started smoking clove cigs once in a while because I love the way they smell. I also used to smoke cherry pipe tobacco for the same reason. I've never enjoyed regular cigarettes. Since I've been in grad school I keep clove cigarettes on hand for when I go out dancing or out for a drink. It makes me feel like a man in a smoking jacket. There's no way I could smoke regularly because I get too lightheaded and I'd like to keep it that way ;)

Tried quitting but it aint easy when you've done it forever. I've cut down on the puffin tho. A pack of 20 wud last 3 days now. Used to be 2 packs of 20 per day. Umm I have to admit yes I do. Won't insult anyones intelligence with stories of failed attempts to quit.

I started smoking at the tender age of 10!! (yes 10). Smokes in Australia were 50c for a packet of 20's. That same packet (yes they still make them!) is now worth $9.95 to buy. That is 28 years later. What else could have risen in value that much in 28 years?
