View Full Version : 80's >>> DVD
RetroMan 10-20-00, 12:28 PM I think it is totally cool how they're starting to release 80's classics on DVD. DVD has to be the biggest digital revolution since the glorious creation of the CD player back in 1983 http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif what an amazing thing it was back then - "music on a round piece of funky rainbow disco mirror" - totally bizarre!!, now it the time for the next stage. DVD not only has the classic 80's movie, but additional stuff like out-takes, original trailers and promo cinema adverts -
it's bringing all the 80's magic back!! I praise the mighty DVD! hurrah!

ReagansRenegade 10-22-00, 11:11 PM Im working on a Flashdance site (http://www.angelfire.com/80s/flashdance). I took vidcaps using a WebTV Plus from a VCR tape. It was pretty difficult trying to get the people in good positions where the light was hitting them right and stuff. If i had a DVD i would probably be in exctasy, and i would want even more a PC DVD, which is what i will probably end up doing- imagine the possibilities! For now i am more then happy with my WebTV Plus and have yet to really take advantage of everything. Im sort of a fogey when it comes to technology. I didnt own or HOLD a CD or CD player until around '92, and didnt even know about them till the early 90s (weird or what?). I have yet to buy a PC, listen to an Mp3 or drive a car with electric windows lmao.
I'd start with the John Hughes collection first!
We bought the Matrix on DVD and have yet to see it. We did the same thing with CD's - started buying CD's way before we bought a CD player lol.

RetroMan 10-27-00, 12:30 PM well it's probably a good idea - I think DVD will be the next revolution - I can't see it failing like the lazerdisc did. It's here for good so get collecting - even if you don't have a player just like Zel is doing - just imagine how cool it's going to be when you do end up getting around to buying one - you won't be going outside for a while! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Gotta agree with ya RetroMan, DVD's are the wave of the future! :thumb: Their crystal clear quality and fantastic theater and surround sound! :) I love them because they're interactive, which makes the whole movie experience more fun and meaningful! I really like commentaries so I can learn fact during the course of a films production. Outtakes are gems! I like getting more scenes from a film and judge for myslef wether they worked or not. Blooper reels are the best though, I for one, like to see mistakes and the actors goofing around on the set! :goofy:
All in all, I think DVD is here to stay! It's made it's impact and sales are continually on the rise. :)
My Obsession 4-14-02, 03:07 PM DVDs are great. And the fact that they're converting many 80s movies to DVD is cool too. Last week I bought the Arnold Shwazenegger classic action film "Commando" for less than 10 bucks.
Still though, someone needs to release a DVD collection of 80s music videos - like a pack of 4 or 5 or something.
To the best of my knowledge, no one has done this yet.
PoloPlayr 4-16-02, 10:32 AM I'm really really tempted to buy really obscure 80s movies in VHS and ripping them and burning to CDs, so I can watch them on my DVD player. First I have to find a computer geek to help me out, though...I mean picking up quirky 'college-bikini-party-b-movies' on eBay for a couple of bucks and then collecting them on VCD to pop in your player...mmm....

Sound like a plan man, and I'd like to do that with 'some' films, but I would need a dvd burner! :)
scott28883 4-16-02, 02:03 PM DVDs are awesome. They have so much more than a vhs tape. Last week, I bought The Thing with Kurt Russell. Other 80s movies I have on dvd are Cannonball Run, Sleepaway Camp, Excalibur,, Meatballs and Midnight Madness. This list will expand really fast, soon.
I would like to purchase a DVD player. They seem to be a lot cheaper now. :) Can you record movies from your TV on a DVD player?

Yes you can TC, but you have to purchase the recordable DVD player and they are a lot more money than your standard DVD player, which sucks! :( But the recordable DVD technology just came to the consumer market last year, so it will take some time before there is a decrease in purchase price.
Thanks, Trixter! :) That must explain why some DVD's are $100 and others are $300. :)

Scott, it looks as though your list may expand even quicker, the studios are hurrying to release their 80's movies from their vaults, I can only expalin this due to the resurgeance of 80's popularity, hey and why not cash in on it while it's hot! Some big 80's titles in the works are "Can't Buy Me Love", "Big Business" and "Beaches". Looks like a good year! :thumb:
scott28883 4-28-02, 03:27 PM I am going wild, crazy and just plain out of control buying dvds lately. Today I bought The Terminator. Past 2 weeks I have bought
Killer Clowns From Outer Space.
Dressed to Kill
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eight Dimension!
And I am planning to buy more because Re-animator comes out this week, whoo hoo, if anyone has seen this movie from the 80s, wow, what a movie. Very disturbing.

I saw the cover from that Killer Clowns DVD. It looked so scary! All of us who posted, "Clowns suck!" in the scariest movie toy forum might not want to see this one!
scott28883 4-29-02, 02:38 PM The clown outfits in this movie are great. They look like evil clowns but still are funny looking. Great makeup.
Iluvthe80s 5-04-02, 05:01 PM I finally got my DVD player this week out of layaway. I now can see what the talk is about these players since this is my first exposure to watching a movie on one. Surprisingly, my first movie was not an 80's movie. I got "RockStar". I will start collecting my fave 80's movies soon though.
DVD's are the best thing out there right now. I got my first DVD player three years ago, I'm on my second one now for the past two years, the first one went poopy on me and the DVD manufacturer won't fix a bad DVD player they will only exchange it (for 90 bucks), so I trashed the first one (RCA) and got a Samsung for 50 bucks more and it's been great.
WARNING: If you're not going to watch your DVD movies right-away save your receipts because sometimes DVD's do have flaws in them. I resently bought (1) and rented (2) "Don't Say A Word" (I think it was called) DVD movies and all three had the same flaw in them. I've had flaws on other disc's and exchanged them for the same movie title and their fine.
There are a lot of 80's movies I want to get yet. I have a lot of the newer movies but I also have stuff like "V The Original Series"(1983) "Pat Benatar-Live In New Haven"(1983) released on DVD in '98, "Deep Star Six"(1988) "Blue Thunder"(1982) and "Logan's Run"(1976) which has been a favorite of mine for years.
JamieStarr 5-05-02, 10:04 AM I bought my first DVD player in 1998 (my first disc was "Boogie Nights").
Now I own 471 DVDs.
98 of them are eighties flicks.
I guess it's save to say that I'm DVD addicted. :D
