Sam Brown had a hit in the UK with a song called "Stop" at the start of 1989. This song was very strong vocally, lyrically and musically. I don't know why she never had another hit, but she really deserved one.
Does anyone know what happened to her?

I vaguely remember the name, but I'm not sure. I thought you were talking about the "Star Search" guy, but that is Sam Harris. :o

I remember Sam Brown and the song "Stop", but only vaguely. The song wasn't a big hit over here in the States, but it went Top 10 in the UK, Australia and other parts of Europe. I was able to find an older article on Sam, dated from 1997. You can check it out here! (http://www.thei.aust.com/isite/brown.html)

She was on Jools Hollands hogmanay this year belting a couple out.
If I recall she had the LPs Stop!, The Kissing gate, and one called 74minutes which she released after she got dropped by her record label. I've seen her name appear on Texas and Maria McKee LPs as a backing singer (on the Texas LPs, with Maria McKee).
Hmm, Sharleen, Maria and Sam in the same place! excuse me while i have a cold shower! ;)
Part of her biography reveals her influences...
"Born on October 7, 1964, she came to it as naturally as breathing because she grew up in the most musical of families. Just before The Beatles broke through, her father, Joe, was an influential guitarist and had three Top 10 pop hits. Her mother Vicki was a top backing vocalist from the early 70s onwards, with her partner Liza Strike famously providing the harmonies for T. Rex. What with Joe owning a nearby studio too (The Grange), Sam's childhood home was always full of musicians, among them Small Faces' Steve Marriott and Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour."
