I voted for "other". I'm not a big fan of Barbra, even though she does have a beautiful voice. I did like her duet with Neil Diamond, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", which they performed together live on the Grammy Awards in 1980.

That was actually 1979, it was a good song.

I guess I should have put 'No More Tears' (duet w/ Donna Summer) in this poll. Great song and somewhat out of character for Streisand.

Some info I found on the web:

"Regarding live performances on the annual Grammy Awards telecasts, Barbra Streisand has only performed once, February 27, 1980, with Neil Diamond for their double Grammy-nominated duet, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." There has been one subsequent performance - February 25, 1992 - a very brief acappella "You'll Never Know" to close Barbra's Grammy Legend Award acceptance speech."

I find it fascinating how many people will say that "If a song is released on December 31, 1979, then is doesn't qualify as an 80s song..." I guess I'm just not that much of a musical purist! To me, if the song received major airplay or was still on the charts into 1980, then it counts in my book!

80's Trivia,

The chart info I use shows You Don't Bring Me Flowers entered the top 40 in November of 1978. I stand corrected on the Grammy performance date.

I hope that you didn't think I was being snotty in my above post, Greenway. I really do find it interesting to hear other people's takes on what actually constitutes an 80s song, as we all have our own different opinions and criteria to go by!

I really did not like any of Barbra Stresand's songs from the 80s. There is one song I like, but it is from the 70's and that is "Evergreen".

Nope, you aren't being snotty.

I'm probably more likely to think of the 80's as a Jan 1, 1980 to Dec 31, 1989 phenomena, especially when creating a poll, but I understand that some things just don't fit that rigid definition. Some Disco bled over into the 80's just like some Hair Bands spilled into the 90's, yet disco is generally 70's music and Hair Bands are generally 80's music.

of the ones listed I like "Comin' in and out of your life" the best.

Being a chart purest....."No more tears" charted at #1 in 1979, it was still in the hot 100 as January of 1980 hit. Chart purests like myself would consider it a 70's song because it hit it's height of popularity in 1979.

I voted for "The Main Event"..........or Other.

I remember having to perform a Drill Team routine to that for camp in '84......though I can't for the life of me remember when it came out. That was a good one!!

I know what you mean, they have a still from "The Way We Were" on this week's TV listings. She looked good with Robert Redford, but I can't explain why.

Re: Barbara Streisand

other: memories

- i thought i wasn't going to have a vote for this poll, but i just googled and realized that this mp3 that i've found in the late 90s is for a cut that was actually 1st released in 1981, as part of a couple-new/mostly-older package (it also contains a version of Billy Joel's 'New York State of Mind'?!?!? i've never heard it) called 'Memories'.

- i think the barry manilow version of 'memories' is just as good, if not better. having *both* is a mindblower, as i consider each to be at the pinnacle of what the human voice is/does.

- that barbra has had so many different musical identities is a great story. she and linda ronstadt both re-invented themselves as the 80's went on, and stretched the boundaries, artistically, and for the industry. broadway and big band pablum for the geritol crowd meant big bucks. i can't identify much with the specifics of her political identity as she evolved into the 90s, but i still find it fascinating that she endured. even though she's soooo far out of my range, i envy anyone who got to see her perform.

- 'you dont bring me flowers' was originally 2 separate versions, and a radio station DJ put them together in a Frankensten-esque splice, and it generated an immediate buzz in that particular area (i can't remember where it happened), getting lots of requests on their top 40 format stations. the neil diamond version actually did chart much earlier (78 sounds right, but i never heard it, that's for sure). copies made their way to other stations, and it was obvious... the thing was hot. within weeks, a legitimate version was released. i can remember in the fall of 79, there was Sister Sledge's 'we are family' at #1 on our local top 40, and it was gonna get knocked off by this duet. the song was *old* (several months), but it was now re-surging because it could finally be bought. how one comes up with the precise charting on this one is beyond me... a rare, exceptional situation. i do remember the build up to the performance on tv, because the two humans behind the voices would be physically together for that song.

- 'evergreen' has to be her signature song
