Talking Wine Coolers an 80s thing?

Okay. What about Wine Coolers? Were those Bartles & James and Seagrams coolers something new for the 80s? I'm thinking they were. They were HUGE for awhile. Everybody had a wine cooler in 'em.

Do they even sell wine coolers anymore? We used to drink those or order white wine spritzers when we were underage because it sounded so sophisticated that no one would dare ask us for ID lol.

Wow! You aren't serious about wine coolers being sold anymore... Are ya? I don't consume sugar anymore but I loved them until I stopped (drinking sugar). They rule!

directly to the vodka, rye, good wine at the back of the store (mmmm) and Mike's Hard Lemonade (oh and Mr. Zel's beer).

Now I'm curious and since its Friday tommorrow - Field trip!

We drank wine coolers all the time when I was a teen. We had "Canada Cooler" here, it was cheap!! They still have them but in a number of different flavours.
Now the thing to drink is tequila and vodka coolers. Don't know what they are like since I haven't drank in 10 years (I was a bad bad girl when I drank )

Wine coolers are alive and well here in teh Mid West. You can get them in about 20 different flavors.

Anbody besides me remember when you could get a 2 LITER bottle of Sun Country Wine Cooler? It came in a green plastic bottle that was almost identical to the Mountain Dew bottle.

A few bucks, a nice girl, a 2 liter of wine cooler. AHHH the summer of 87 was great!

Yes, wine coolers are still around over here. But since I do the Atkins diet I don't get to have any! That's okay though. I'm feeling great.. They taste so damn good though! Strawberry Daquiry, Black Cherry...

We still have the wine coolers over here. I tried one the other day, Black Cherry....for some reason, it didn't quite taste the same as it did those many years ago....maybe that was just me. I think that they taste too "malty" now. IMHO

haha! Silly's... Well, I've never had the Watermelon flavor. But I can definitely imagine that Jolly Rancher taste. I think it's stupid but when I was growing up, Wine Coolers were for girls and Beer was for guys.. Why would I want a disgusting beer when I can have such a flavorful drink? Wacky!

In the '80s I was into cheap stuff. Thunderbird or MD20/20. Tickled Pink was good too.

Now I make a beeline for good beer, or I brew my own.

Talking

Hi. I'm new here.

Jasper - I remember Sun Country too, cheap and easy to get.

But, when it comes to 80's wine coolers, there's really only two words - Matilda Bay. It was put out by Miller, there was a yellow label and a purple label. Each label was a different flavor, but I don't remember; I think one might have been 'tropical' or something like that. It went down much easier than the fruit/berry flavors.

One of my friends still drinks wine coolers on a regular basis. I've moved on to beer.

OOOHHHH wine coolers!! I lived off of them! Back in 1990, at the ripe old age of 17, I attempted to but a 2 liter of Bartles and James, and I ended up getting arrested!! Come to find out, the little corner store was having a sting operation going on by the local police. They busted over 90 teens over a 3 day weekend, and they ended up losing their licenses for more than 3 months!! I, on the other hand did not lose my license because I was about to turn 18, and the law is different for 18 year olds. The attorney didn't hurt my case either.
I also used to drink Boones Strawberry Hills, god you could really puke up some friday night party food after drinking that. YUCK!!!

Question

What was that stuff with everclear in it? Purple passion or something like that? I used to get that up in Chicago. I kind of switched to Zimas now. I'm sure I'll have to get some when I take my next vacation.

Cool

I've been trying to think of another brand that was really popular. There was Bartles & James, Seagrams and California Coolers. Those are the ones that I really liked. In fact, I had the worlds coolest mom. She'd go out and buy me wine coolers. As long as I stayed home and drank them.

Re: Wine Coolers an 80s thing?

I loved wine coolers! (Still do!) Seagram's used to make these wonderful flavors: Peach Melba Rum, Tequila Sunrise Surprise and one with gin (don't remember what it was called). They were all delicious and I would have to get my older sister to buy me some as I wasn't of legal age during the 80s!

Re: Wine Coolers an 80s thing?

I never understood why wine coolers came in packs of 4. Beer comes in 6 packs. I never saw a guy drinking a wine cooler. We used to drink Sisco (Made people violent) and Purple Passion. I actually saw a 1 liter bottle of purple passion in the LQ the other day. I almost bought it until i remembered it made me violently ill the last time i drank it. But all in all i'm a beer girl give me an amstel light or a pete's strawberry blonde and I'm happy.
