Steve Strange book survey

Just out of interest, which would you be more likely to buy. Steve Strange's autobiogrpahy or a fictional story of Steve with all the names changed but still obvious who it would be about.

Please state your reasons.

Well Chris, I would need to know a little more about Steve Strange first. I don't really know why. Maybe it is because I don't know (ie haven't heard enough of) the music. I have a Best of album and the 12" version of Fade To Grey, but there weren't enough Visage tracks to keep the interest alive. Don't get me wrong. I love the Visage tracks I know, but they weren't around for long enough to keep the interest high. I have read Gary Numan's autobiography, by Steve Mailins and in it Steve Strange gets a mention, though not in a favourable way. For me, I don't know enough about Steve Strange and Visage to be that interested. I am interested in the music of this period, and indeed the artists, but Visage just was not as big as some of the other stars such as, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Duran Duran...
I would be more interested in a book about the synthesisers they used; recording sessions; how the recordings were done...a bit more of the "trainspotter" stuff, as sad as that sounds!
Does this help? Have I lost a fellow new romantic friend because of my lack of interest? Hope not.

I guess i have this image of everybody knowing Steve Strange much better than I do. I didn't even know he was the singer of Visage or who he was really although I knew he existed and I *loved* the song but that was about it. But I wasn't aware that he was running all those clubs like the Camden Palace and organising parties for celebrities. Besides, Marilyn was a cigarette girl at one of the clubs he ran. I guess most accounts of him were unfavourable. I've read Boy George's autobiography and it was far from flattering. Ditto Marc Almond's which i only managed to skim through. So I'm not surprised at all.

I loved Depeche Mode as well.

I think it would be interesting to know how Midge Ure got along with Mr. Strange. Seeing as Midge probably had the most successful post-Visage career. I would think he would have some useful and informed things to say about old Stevie. I must look for some Midge Ure interviews/biographies. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Guess there is a lot of bitchiness coming from Steve Strange where Midge ure is concerened but i agree, it *would* be great to find out Midge Ure's point of view.

I would love to read about Steve Strange. I always been interested in Visage. It amazes me how many bands they have influenced up through the 80's and 90's. This would make sense if you look at Depeche Mode with years of succes, but Visage were only around for a limited period of time. They were far more innovative than most bands at that time. I am putting them up there with Kraftwerk, cause they changed that scene so drastically with very few songs!

After reading these posts I went to New Wave Hits of th'80s(vol.3) from Rhino Records. I have not heard 'Fade To Grey' in a long time. Also, NewRomantic, that same vol.3 has 'Cars' by Gary Numan on it. But my favorite Numan song is Are'Friends' Electric. Anyway thanks for the heads up on the Steve Steange book and I will find the biography on Gary Numan.
