View Full Version : Murphy Brown
Dancingdoll1986 1-23-02, 12:52 AM When this came out, all I could remember was thinking that it was going to be great and contriversial. And it was. Especially when Dan Quale blasted "Murphy Brown" for being a bad role model for young girls all over the land. I thought that that was pretty dumb, considering "Murphy" was 38 years old, and finanically secure in her own right. I didn't feel the need to go out and get pregnant, at least back then.
Who else thought that this show was hard to miss? I saw it for awhile on Lifetime, but people must have complained or something, because it was yanked after only a couple of months.:(
Gretchen, I was an avid watcher of "Murphy Brown"! This show broke new ground, it was refreshing and funny. I especially enjoyed anticipating who was going to be Murphy's receptionist/secretary for the episode. Jim was always a favorite character of mine, so conservative and straight laced, but when he lost it, it was downright hilarious! All in all a terrific show!! :thumb:
80sTrivia 1-23-02, 05:51 AM Murphy Brown was a great show!!! Candace Bergin was fabulous in that role and deserved all of her Emmy nods. I always enjoyed the witty banter between Murphy and Frank Fontana. And Eldin never did finish painting her house, did he???

Dancingdoll1986 1-23-02, 10:57 AM Actually, Eldin left the show before the season that Lily Tomlin came on. He went to Paris to study with one of his idols, to whom he wrote a letter to years and years before, and who answered at that time.
The thing I loved also, was Trixters point-out....the secretary count. I loved the one who was always in some sort of "character"....Eliza Doolittle, Bette Davis...she was funny!!!
I adored Murphy Brown, but I lost interest after Eldin left the show. Colleen Dewhurst was so great as Murphy's mother... what a sad loss for the entertainment world when she passed away.
My favorite aspect of the show was the workplace friendships & tensions. And Murphy's ever-rotating secretaries. Remember when Paul Reubens was on? OMG, how hilarious.
Dancingdoll1986 1-25-02, 09:19 AM I loved Paul on that show!! I loved it when he was in charge there for a while!!! Now, that's the sort of comedy he should do.....he was totally awesome with that sort of thing!!
I didn't care for Lily Tomlin after Miles left, but I liked the story line of Murphy got breast cancer. That touched really close to home. (My 2nd mom nearly died of BC when Cindi and I were about 12.)
I wish that TPTB wouldn't have taken it off Lifetime!!
80sTrivia 1-25-02, 09:23 AM This is OT, but, speaking of Pee-Wee, he's in the latest Elton John video, the one with Justin Timberlake portraying a 70s version of Elton. It's a pretty cool vid!!! :)

Dancingdoll1986 1-25-02, 11:32 AM I'm going to have to try and catch that vid.....but I HATE N*Sync....espcially Justin. But, I love Elton!! And PeeWee!!
OT: I did not know that was Justin Timberlake! LOL I just thought they got some ugly kid! LOL I think that other N'Sync boy is cuter....but who cares about their names?
Back on topic: I liked Murphy Brown, but once the baby was born and the characters started dropping off like flies, I quit watching. I thought the funniest thing was to see how long her secretary would last. lol
BrandyBlue 1-26-02, 12:50 PM I still catch Murphy every so often on local stations. I think the show was great. My last name is Brown and because I had the big hair and attitude, I was "Murphy" for the longest time! I loved it though! Candace Bergman is a great lady in her own right and she created a wonderful role model for all of us. "Murphy, its DAN QUAYLE--forget about it!" Who could forget that?
That 80z Girl 2-23-02, 04:57 PM Murphy Brown was a great show! I miss it.
And BTW, that Elton John video is definity... interesting.
Professor 3-05-02, 03:56 PM I was always a big fan of Murphy Brown. Candice Bergen deserved all the Emmys she won. Politics aside, the show was just flat-out funny! Eldin was a very quirky, cynical guy. Frank could never commit. Corky was a combination of Kathie Lee Gifford and Kelly Ripa. Jim Dial, the stuffy senior anchor, was played to perfection by Charles Kimbrough--ever notice how much he sounded like CBS newsman Bill Plante? Miles must have set the record for consuming Maalox. I especially liked Garry Marshall's turn as Stan Lansing in the show's later years. There was also Pat Corley's gruff portrayal of Phil ("Hey there, Murphy...") who knew everybody in Washington. All in all, the situations, the dialogue and everything about the show was just incredibly funny.
