Hey Y'all,
Remember the good old days of MTV when you could actually see a video and they actually highlighted a special video for it's uniqueness, and vision, etc...and it was referred to as a "Breakthrough" video? Well I can't for the life of me remember one of 'em, can y'all help me out here? :)

I'm not positive about this but wasn't "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel one? I can't really remember which videos were Breakthrough videos, but I can still remember some of the World Premiere videos they had.

Hmmm... I can't remember which videos were actually presented as "Breakthrough" vids, but I'm sure "Take On Me" by a-ha would have made the cut! :)

I vaguely remember Breakthough Videos... but I believe MTV started plugging those towards the end of the decade, like around '88 or '89. Like you said, a video got that title if it was "different." (whatever that was supposed to be)
I definitely remember two Breakthrough videos on MTV. One was from David Byrne and the Talking Heads... either the album or the song was titled "Naked", but I can't remember which. What was so "different" about it I couldn't remember, other than the fact it was the first Talking Heads video for a long while.
The other Breakthrough Video I definitely remember: "All She Wants Is" by Duran Duran (from their Decade album). It definitely had a different look: instead of video tracks, it consisted mostly of stop action montages, with lots of freaky lighting effects. Also, a lot of the scenes didn't show the performers, but rather mannequins dressed like them.
I'm not sure, but I also vaguely remember "Sadeness, pt 1" by Enigma as being hailed as a Breakthrough Video as well.
Hope that helps.

They later called them "Buzz videos" and then "Buzz bin" and included the likes of Right here right now-Jesus Jones and Smells like teen spirit-Nirvana (Yuck)
Yes, JohnnyZ, I'm sure of it, Duran Duran's "All She Wants Is" was a 'breakthrough' video and to tell you the truth 80sTrivia, I think "Take On Me" was as well!! :)
