Okay, I don't know how this is possible, but I know a girl who says that the 80s was the most boring decade of the 20th century, and no good movies or music came out of it! She even went as far as to say that the "Breakfast Club" was the dumbest movie she's ever seen!

Ugh... Who is this girl you know? Could she be - Satan? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//DEVIL2.gif The 80's were a great decade. You had the beginning of a musical invasion - New Wave. Metal became mainstream. Alternative music sprang into being and the fashions, at least in my opinion have yet to be matched.

As for the "Breakfast Club" being a dumb movie? Hardly. I can only think of a handful of movies from the 80's that truly embodied the decade and that is one of them.

We won't hold her against you though. You obviously know better, because here you are. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

WHAT!

Obviously this person NEVER lived the 80's. She's probably one of those annoying people that thinks today's music is actually good. Because you know it takes alot of talent to talk over a drum machine & sampler keyboard. Heaven forbid they use actually insterments like the bands in the 80's did.

And as far as no good movies in the 80's? Hummm let's see...

Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Die Hard
Terms Of Endearment
ET
The Empire Strikes Back
Back To The Future
Sixteen Candles
BREAKFAST CLUB
Top Gun
The Road Warrior
The River's Edge
Ghostbusters
Tequila Sunrise
Buckaroo Banzai
Blue Velvet
Predator
Terminator
Big Trouble In Little China
Nightmare On Elm Street

and I am leaving out tons more great movies from the 80's! If that doesn't convince her, just punch her in the mouth, will ya!

Although everyone here is most likely to disagree with me, i also am partial to feeling that the 80's kinda sucked. The clothes and hair were atrocious, and much of hte music that came from that period needs to be destroyed (especially madonna. her voice is so ANNOYING). Much of hte music from today, is bad too, so don't think i'm sticking up for todays stuff. Perhaps on of the WORST inventions of the 80's was the modern version of the boy band. New kids on the block have spawned creations worse than satan, namely N'sync and the backstreet boys *shudder*. I think one of the worse aspects of the 80's was that it was an era of greed and excessiveness. Corperate rock was king, and making money reigned. Drum machines require much LESS talent than playing an instrument, and they were MUCH more prevalent then than they are today. I personally care for the do it yourself attitude of punk (i.e. misfits, sex pistols, and todays punk like anti-flag and backside). the 80's was a great time for movies i agree, but not much else. also, i think that it is rather hypocritical to make fun of someone who isn't even able to defend themselves, and insinuate that by listening to a band that perhaps YOU don't like, makes you braindead. Look at all the 1 hit wonders of hte 80's...most of it is absolute crap. sorry for having to rant like this. i actually do LIKE lots of stuff from the 80's. i have fond memories of the arcades, movies, some of the music, and generally the culture itself. it was a great time, but not he BEST. thank you.

Music: David Bowie (awsome!!!), Billy Idol, Culture Club (alright, i guess), some guns and roses stuff, misfits, clash, bangles, the cure and others

movies: fast times at ridgemont high (classic), farris bueler's day off, any star wars and indiana jones movies that were made, breakfast club, TOP GUN (made me want to join the airforce when i saw it!!! i was really little) there are a bunch of movies. great time for movies.

who can forget NINTENDO!!! i remember when i first got mine...almost brings a tear to my eye...

Welcome Misfits, Although I don't agree with you, I do respect your opinion. I grew up in the 70's which also had it's good and bad things, but my favorite decade was still the 80's when it came to music & movies. Even today, there is music both good and bad, it just depends on each individules taste.
80's music is not being forced onto anyone here, everyone comes here to talk about their experiences in the 80's and others want to learn something about that decade, but they do it by their own free will.

If we don't talk about the music of the 80's....I guess we'll talk on the movie threads.

I want to apologize for coming of more indignant than i truly meant to be. I do really love lots of stuff about the 80's (yes, even the clothes and stuff). I guess i just chose to focus on some of the other stuff instead of all the good things. I don't even know what i was talkin about really, considering how i made a cd off of napster with ALL 80's songs on it. good cd too. To be honest, i was just in a bad mood i guess, and i shouldn't have taken it out on you guys. i think that it's great that you guys are keeping the past alive this way, so it isn't forgotten. anyways, who am i kidding? how could i hate the decade i was born in??? I agree with you about Stevie Ray being in a league with Hendrix. however, I wouldn't put Page in that league. While a great songwriter and arranger, he tended to play VERY sloppy live. Saw him at Madison Square Garden once, and he was all over the place. He IS a legend though!

Welcome, Misfit! I think it takes a lot of guts to say what you really believe on a board dedicated to the opposite opinion. (Hey, I defended Nirvana once last week, and nobody hurt me! *ducks*)

Every decade has its ups and downs, that's for sure. And Club977 is right; every decade since human beings arrived on the planet has been about greed, in one way or another, so we can't hold it against the 80s, can we? Heh!

It's funny that most of my favorite pop culture stuff is from '85 through '88, the most miserable years of my childhood. I was lonely, depressed, and bored, and so I soaked up as much kitsch as I could to comfort myself. If you gave me the opportunity to go back to the 80s, I wouldn't go: I'd croak if I had to relive my early adolescence. But if I did, I'd be sure to gather up all the old teeny-bopper magazines, kids' books, toys, etc. I threw out when I was 16 and bring them back http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

If you read all my other posts you know how I feel about music. To say the music of today sucks is a terrible thing. I think there are many talented artists out today. Some of my favorites of the 90's and today are:
Prince (sorry, he's my all time fav)
Lenny Kravitz
Wallflowers
PM Dawn
one word....Janet
Soul Asylum
DMX
Ja Rule
Blackhawk

Too many to post. Granted the 90's and today are different but not bad. The 80's are still my favorite time for music.

I really don't think there is anything wrong with drum machines, it's just a different type of talent from actually playing.
