There were quite a few instrumental songs that became popular in the 70s and 80s. Do you have a favorite?

Another tough poll. I voted for "Chariots Of Fire". There was always something about that piece that I really enjoyed listening to. "Close To The Edit" would be a very close second.

I still love the Miami Vice theme!

I've always loved this instrumental. There have been some other instrumentals that I love too:

Robin the Hooded man - Clannad - Theme for Robin of Sherwood (In hind site I should have clicked "Other" because I loved this theme even more.) But then again Robin the Hooded Man also had some vocals in it.

I also love Jean Michel Jarre who came up with a couple of Synthesizer instrumentals, not sure whether they were 70s or 80s:

Oxygene
Equinox

Problem is Jarre wasn't that original with names and had several different songs under those names. Oxygene II, III, IV? Equinox III, IV, V??? I can never remember which one is which!

My vote went to "Close to the Edit" by The Art of the Noise. I always loved the avant-garde style of TAON, and "Close to the Edit" was the ultimate in over-the-top foolishness!!!

 I went into this thread absolutely convinced Axel F would be on the list ;)

Don't sweat it Michael, even great & knowledgable people make mistakes from time to time, keep up the good work :thumb: :p

What? No "Rockit"?

I voted Other, but it wasn't for that. Rather, it's for "Le Parc" by Tangerine Dream. ABC used that instrumental (and some other stuff) for their short-lived "Street Hawk" TV series.

I voted for other - Moments In Love by Art Of Noise. Brilliant and timeless track.

I'm another one who went for Axel F, but I was torn between that and Peter Gunn.

"Close to the edit" by far!!!!

"Axel F", without a doubt.

The regular version is nifty, but the extended version of the song is better.

If you didn't list the option of "other", but included "Axel F", I'd have a hard time deciding between that and "Close To The Edit"...Sadly, though through only a small, simple mistake, that was not to be.

"Close To The Edit" was good, though.

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

 Actually I originally looked at your poll and knew there was an obvious one missing too. It wasn't until someone mentioned it wasn't there that it dawned on me "Axel F"!

Calling Roemy!!! Could you please remove "Popcorn" by Hot Butter (that was more 70s anyway) and replace it with "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer? :)

I have Trans X's "Living On Video" on vinyl single, Smurfy. As there are lyrics to the song, it wouldn't qualify as an instrumental. But it's a kewl song, nonetheless!!! :)

I think you're right Michael, it's not really an instrumental even tho' I think it's the keyboard that carries this tune :)

Have you noticed the Pac Man sound in the end of it...It's the sound you get when puttin' a coin in the Pac Man arcade, just brilliant :D

Stars on 45 isn't an instrumental!

Maybe I should have chosen 'Hooked on Classics"!

80sTrivia
3-27-02, 03:57 PM
And now that Axel F has been added to the poll, no one has voted on it yet!!! :)

Greenway88
3-27-02, 04:06 PM
Hooked on Classics is by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, not Stars on 45. Stars on 45 did medleys of 60s and 70s groups. The orginal featured mostly Beatles songs, but they did ones by Abba and Stevie Wonder also.

My favorite instrumental of the 80's was the theme song from Miami Vice. Universal Studios Florida used to play that song during their water stunt show based on the show. I wish they were still doing it today, it was cool to watch the stunts on the water with that song ringing out throughout the park.

"Miami Vice Theme" was by far the best from "Escape From Television" (http://www.cdnow.com/from=sr-181894/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1156010747/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/ArtistID=HAMMER*JAN/ITEMID=325997).

all choices on the poll are awesome!

but, i had to go with 'Other'... (herbie hancock/rockit)

it was O.K. on the radio, but at a club/party, when it first came out? it created quite the buzz... i can vividly remember the 1st time i saw guys break dancing, i mean, really doing it. dang! what a vibe, what energy

There were a lot of great choices here. I went with Axel F. It fit perfectly into the Beverly Hills Cop movie and is a great sign of the times with the use of all the synthesizers. It was very catchy and uptempo.

I voted for other - "Rain Forest" by Paul Hardcastle.

I don't envision myself posting here too often, but I must thank DJ Midas for listing that song. For YEARS I've wondered what the name of that song was and it has eaten at me... "like a splinter in your mind driving you mad". I've asked people from radio stations and even made a fool of myself by humming the tune, but time and again, I got, "I never heard of that!"

Now, I have to go out and find the CD. :bouncy:

From the list, my vote goes to Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme".

Apart from this list, I'd like to add a few fantastic instrumental tunes:

Koto - Japanese War Game
Hipnosis - Pulstar
Rofo - Rofo's Theme
Tarracco - Sultana
