I noticed in another thread that Amy Livin has been BANNED from Napster. This is an OUTRAGE! So, I did a little search and came up with...

http://www.metallicavsnapster.com/

There is a link about half way down the page that says "Got Banned?" if you go there there are a few links to sites that may be of help. I am not sure if they work, as I have not been banned from Napster (thanks to the Goddess!) There are also a few funny sites like ****Lars.com, Metallicasucks.com (this is a great site! and they have some funny parodies as well as a link to campcaos.com, which I love!) and screwMETALLICA.org there. Great entertainment.

If those FixNapster sites work, let me know!

Since Napster is sorta the topic here - How do you all use Napster? I think it's interesting to hear peoples opinions on this "hot potato" of the music industry.

I myself use Napster as a way to preview songs before investing $20-30 in imported stuff from Europe. I have also used it to get eighties songs that I can't find on CD anywhere.

How do the rest of you use Napster (if you use it at all)?

How do you get banned from Napster anyway?

Thank you very much, Raine - for posting this topic.. It's important!

Otherwise, I use Napster to get out of print music, AND to preview before I buy. I downloaded the entire "Anthrax: State of Euphoria" album yesterday afternoon - just minutes before I ordered the CD on cdnow.com

I use it to preview new music before investing in a possibly crappy CD and especially to find old music that is impossible to find!! See, I was one of those people that loved songs that were never big hits OR those beloved one hit wonders!! And those are the ones you cannot find anywhere!! It has become a sort of a challenge for me to try to think of a song and then see if I can find it!!

8teesBuff
1-23-01, 05:33 PM
By the way... I checked out those Metallica sites and laughed my butt off!!!
The way I view Napster is...it is no different than recording a song off the radio or copying a friends tape like we have been doing for so many years!! I posted a big message on another message board. I'll see if I can copy and paste it on here.

Oh wait... would that be piracy of my OWN work?? Or does my opinion now become the property of the OTHER message board?? Oh what to do, what to do???

Screw it!! I will take a chance!! Live life on the edge!! ONWARD MUSIC PIRATES!!! ARRGH!!

8teesBuff

Ok here it is... it was pretty long, but I have tried to edit it. (That way it really isn't 'copying' LOL!!)
There is actually some humor in it to peak your intrest and keep you entertained!!

"...What is the difference in getting a song from Napster, or recording off the radio?? If copying a song is so illegal, why is it we can BUY a portable CD/cassette player that has the ability to record from the radio or copy a CD or cassette? Why is it that we can buy CD burners, blank tapes and blank CD's? I am sure that the "piracy police" know that copying exists, so why aren't these items illegal??

Think about it, recording, copying, piracy whatever you want to call it has been going on for years!! The only thing that has changed is the means by which we do it and that, my friends, is called TECHNOLOGY!!!

Here is a rundown of the changes of technology.
Ok... those of you that grew up in the 70's or 80's. Remember what we used to record a song off the radio?? Remember those tape recorders that recorded "in the air" that we had to put it UP AGAINST the speaker?? Then we had to hold out little brothers hostage with our jump rope and a sock stuffed in his mouth so that his "By the power of GreySkull, I have the power" battle cry wouldn't be heard in the background??

Then along comes the double cassette "boom box"! OH, now THAT was the life!! We could record songs off the radio and your little brother could scream his lungs out!! We could copy our friend's tapes cuz back in those days our parents couldn't afford to buy EVERY tape we wanted or our allowance was a minimum or you had to wait till Christmas.

Then comes along the CD. Well, we couldn't afford to upgrade our ENTIRE music collection and equipment, so we would copy our NEW CD's onto tape so we could listen to them in the car... right??

And now we have the CD burner which we can now copy CD onto CD, make our own mix of songs, etc. So now, instead of getting a favorite song off the radio and cussing at the DJ cuz he talked through the ENTIRE intro or cut the song off at the end, we can get it off the internet in it's entirety!!"

Technology!!

80teesBuff,
maybe you should consider buying your CD's. I think you misunderstand the people who posted in this topic. I don't have a problem with artists who wants to protect their work. This is not a lecture in morale, but most of the people here still buy most of their music. I hope you do the same to support the bands you like.

Well, without calling this a debate - you both make different points.

One point is that artists should be angry at people copying music. This has been the case from day 1 in the music business. Bootlegs, copied tapes, etc. It's all the same. It's been going on and always will.

Yes, it's a good idea to support your favorite bands. I'm sure 8teesBuff does (I hope so!)... The whole truth of the matter is, napster is the present day dual cassette recorder. It shouldn't be banned. It's been around forever...

As long as people do as I do - NAP a CD or song and then BUY it, then everything is fine.. Like I said, I burned an entire Anthrax CD (so I can have it NOW) and bought it online. That CD should be here in a few days and I will then add it to my collection. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

I tend to use Napster to check things out. I Downloaded some of Doro's latest work, because I just wasn't sure if I wanted to pay all that money for an import that may not be that good. (It IS good, and I now own it!!) I also use Napster to Download oddities and rarities. I have alot of parodies and mixes that I cannot get anywhere else. And for those oddball songs that get stuck in my head, but I don't really LIKE the artist enough to purchase the CD. (Ok, is THAT bad? I mean, if I didn't have napster, I STILL wouldn't buy the damn cd...)

To answer annual_mayhem's earlier question, you can get banned from Napster if you download Metallica. They frown on that.

Oh and State of Euphoria is KICK ASS!

I wonder if people would use Napster as much if more artists released cd-singles? I would certainly spend $3-4 on cd-singles, if more songs were available on this format. The problem is that the one song you heard on the radio never is available. Unless of course you fork out the $15 for the whole album.

Me and mum use it also for songs you can no longer get or can't find on cds. Mum has found songs on Napster that she hasn't heard since she was little! Plus it comes in handy when you only want one song from an artist who you don't really like or is a one hit wonder.

Artists should simply have CDs created by request with the songs people want. Right from their website it can be an entirely automated procedure. You pick what you want, the system makes you a CD, and you buy it... Done.

Otherwise, as for Anthrax's State of Euphoria.. I DID have it on cassette - but haven't heard it in so long! I forgot how much I liked it! I like it even more than Among the Living! What a great album! It's going to be in my CD player for awhile... I wish there was more music like this because it's really exactly what I like - my favorite when it comes to Metal. Hard Rock is another story altogether...

I have no problem on paying for music that I like, but albums that come out only have a couple of songs that are really good and the others are just fillers. Kinda like I would throw in that dollar or whatever change I have to that person playing on the street corner. So I have no problem buying cd's, because the artist that made them deserve to get paid. But who really gets the bulk of what we are paying for that cd, how much percentage does the artist get. So maybe with this technology that almost everybody has, we can just deal directly with the artists and cut out big label companies. Have you guys read this http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2000/06/14/love/print.html , check it out...

Hey Tukmol. Well, I couldn't read the whole article - but I got a gist of what she was saying.. It's very true.. Napster isn't stealing from the bands as much as it is the greedy record companies.. I think each artist should have their own website and sell their stuff on their own. Record companies shouldn't be making more than the artist. It's the artist that - oh forget it. It's useless. People just like to go with the flow. We pay high car insurance.. We pay high income taxes... Whatever.

I hate to defend record companies, but fact is: they pay for production, promotion and distribution. If they weren't greedy they wouldn't be able to sign smaller unknown bands. We all have a few bands that we love although none of our friends know of them. Those bands would have a harder time breaking through if record companies didn't cash in on successes. There's only room for 50 songs on the top 50. Think of the many cd's that are produced only to get discounted away for nothing. Some might say: well, those bands are crap anyways, but that could be your favourite "unknown" band.

I do support buying and paying for music online. It's cheaper and easier. I just don't like the "if it's on the internet, then it should be free" idea.

I use Napster either to hear songs off an album to decide if I want to buy the album, or to download obscure 80's songs that don't get played on the radio anymore, if they ever did at all. I've downloaded stuff from Icehouse, A-Ha, Simple Minds, etc. that I probably wouldn't have been able to find otherwise.

The only was to listen to stuff you've downloaded off Napster is on the computer, right?

Actually, you can convert these MP3s and burn them onto a CD. This is what Metallica is afraid of. They are afraid that if everyone can get it for free and burn their own CDs, then noone will buy the actual CD.

Be Afraid.. Be Very Afraid....
Well, if I were Metallica.. I would stop sueing my fans so that they will still "want" to buy their albums. I'm so mad at them, I'll never buy another Metallica CD again... The artists that support Napster are going to still get business from the fans..
At least from my standpoint... my CD purchases have INCREASED since Napster... Napster keeps me updated on cds that I would like to have in my collection.

You guys are all going to freak out on me when I tell you this.... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//eek.gif When searching for new mp3s and bands to listen to from Napster, I have discovered that I like.... oh no... here it comes.... be nice to me now..... N'SYNC !!! I swear, I really love them! So I went and bought their newest cd, because I listened to alot of the songs on Napster and decided that I would like to have the cd to listen to in the car for a "pick-me-up"... he he he he
And I have to tell you...I am in love with one of the guys... (I feel like a teenager again) Lance Bass!
(He's the blonde with spiky hair, kinda 80's-ish looking) he sings all of the deep parts... well, at any rate, Napster is a pretty cool way to check out a band that you would not normally go out to the record store and buy... like I said before.. I buy more cds now than ever.

Now that I have humiliated myself http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//redface.gif with my N'SYNC story...I just had to make a point.

Thanks!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

OK ... I would like to clear something up.. I DO buy CD's and support the artists that I like. I did say 2 posts before my long one that I use it to preview songs on a CD of a group that I may only hear one song from.

Example 1... I love the song "Judith" by a hard rock group called "A Perfect Circle". I downloaded 5 other songs from the CD and didn't like ANY of them!! The rest of the songs are very mellow and different from the one I like. So I saved myself 15-17 bucks.

Example 2... I love a song by another hard rock group that is VERY new, Linkin Park, and only has one song out. I downloaded 4-5 other songs from their CD. I loved them and so I went out and bought it on sale for 10 bucks!! There is not one song on it I don't like!!The whole CD is awesome!!!

Example 3... Before I ever heard of Napster, I bought the Eagle Eye Cherry tape for my husband as a gift. He had a song called "Save Tonight" and we both loved it. We listened to the tape ONE TIME. IT IS AWFUL!!! That is the only good song on the tape!! It is now down in the basement in a box of tapes that has only one good song on it.

Hope this clears everything up.
Peace.

I agree 8teesbuff... It's so much nicer being able to check it out before you buy it... Now we don't get tricked into buying something that isn't going to be worth the $$$.

It's ok, Tinajo. Although I cannot fathom what you see in Lance...I have a teenager in the house (well, she will be 13 on Feb.11th) and I have caught myself singing along a few times.

To be honest, I like BSB better, though. They are a tad rougher.
