Stan Ridgeway burst onto the scene in 1986 in the UK with his song Camouflage. About a US Marine who was 7 foot tall and swatted bullets like flies. He managed to save STan's life, but it turns out he was a ghost.

Does anybody remember this song and do you know what became of Stan? As far as I know he only had this hit in the UK. Was he bigger anywhere else?

I have never heard of Stan Ridgeway or the song "Camoflauge", TCM. I'm assuming it was just a hit in Britain and Europe, then, unless someone else knows otherwise. :)

Massive hit in Britain, and in Europe. I remember it very well, if you haven't got a copy of this song I suggest you get it guys.

A very interesting little story!! :thumb:

I'm going to have to see if I can find the download to this song somewhere, as the song's storyline does sound quite intriguing... :)

Wow. Stan Ridgeway had completely slipped my mind. Camouflage was a great song as was Just Drive She Said. He did a great version of the old Kurt Weill song The Cannon Song (or maybe called the Soldier's Song) on a great compilation of Weill tracks called Shooting At The Stars. Sting, Lou Reed, Marianne Faithful and a bunch of other great folks were on that too.

Stan was definitely American. Some of you might know him better as the lead singer for Wall of Voodoo. The song Mexican Radio should ring a bell or two. :)

I've heard the name but never the song :( I do like Wall of Voodoo, their version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of fire" is too much

Camouflage was on Stan Ridgway's album "The Big Heat" (I.R.S. CDILP 26874) which was a very good album indeed with such other great songs as "Drive She Said" or "Twisted". Stan then released "Mosquito" in 1989 (Geffen 24216-2) and Partyball (I.R.S. 7131012). As much as I loved "The Big Heat" and Stan's previous group Wall of Voodoo, I must admit those two albums were not fantastic.

Wall of Voodoo had other great titles such as "Interstate 15" (instrumental). Their version of "Ring of Fire" was apparently used as soundtrack in a porno movie: appropriately used as background music for peopl making it in front of a campfire.

He was American, from L.A.

I've heard of Stan Rigeway, but never the song. Did he do some producing in the 90's? That's where I may have seen his name actually.

Stan is still active. A couple of friends of mine are big fans of his. He is still releasing stuff on minor labels and tours the US alot. I never really understood how Camouflage became such a hit in Europe, but it's still a good song.

They play Stan Ridgway on our recently reborn classic alternative station in the Salt Lake City area. Yes KJQ is back from the dead and I've heard lots of cool alternative songs I hadn't heard in years including 'The Big Heat', a story about a detective. Stan Ridgway is pretty much a folk storyteller alternative artist. 'Drive she Said' was a about a mysterious woman who basically carjacks Stan. If you can find a disc, he's worth a listen.
