What was your favourite Dire Straits song from the 80s?

I have excluded "Sultans Of Swing" because it was a 70s song. (Sorry Abcmcd) And "Calling Elvis" because it was a 90s hit.

My personal favourite is Industrial Disease. But the "Brothers in Arms" album was full of brilliant songs including "Ride across the River" which comes a close second to my favourite.

I voted for Romeo and Juliet. I've always loved that song. Was thrilled to hear it used in Empire Records too.

Another tough choice, but "Walk of Life" got my nod.

never was a big fan of dire straits, but have heard all their songs heaps of times and my vote goes for industrial disease

in my (very) humble opinion, dire straits have dated badly...does anyone else feel the same way?

Let me start off by saying, that I am NOT a Dire Straits fan at all.
The only song of theirs I can stomach would be "Walk Of Life", so that gets my vote.

I voted for "So Far Away". I was never a huge fan of Dire Straits as I never cared for Mark Knopfler's voice. I actually detested the song and video for "Money For Nothing" and in the summer of '85, they played both to death...

Before I vote I need to find out something. I'm thinking of a Dire Straits videos where a girl is going around rollerskating. What video is that? That is the song I want to vote for.

I went with "So far away". It's a nice smooth song. If you were talking videos I would have pickede "Walk of life" with all the sports bloopers :)

Stacy,
You are thinking of "Skateaway" another great song!

I voted for Romeo and Juliet. Like Trixter I'm not really a Dire Straits fan. They usually make me laugh when I see them.

Interesting point Spacey. I never thought about it, but you may be right. Nobody seems to talk about Dire Straits anymore, which never used to be the case. I have never heard this band mentioned at all since I have been a member of the xchange. But having said that, Dire Straits still get a lot of air play on NZ radio.

DS to me though was more about the instrumentals. (Let’s face it Mark Knopfler’s singing was s**t). But the instrumental breaks were terrific. The guitars and the keyboards. EG Industrial Disease, Money for nothing and Walk of Life.

I remember back in 85 seeing DS live and they played “Ride across the River” and the musical interlude seemed to go on forever. I was just relaxing enjoying it, and wouldn’t have minded if they had continued playing it all night!

Oh and by the way Spacey…. CHICKENS!!!!

I didn't really like them as a kid, I was too sick of "Money for Nothing" ;) but I got into them in high school.

I voted for "Brothers in Arms" too, that song gets me right here *points to her solar plexus*

yes, you don't hear much about em these days, considering they were at one stage the hottest act going...maybe if they were still going, playin concerts etc it might be different.....
and i agree: mark knopfler cannot sing (which was probably why i wasn't a big fan of the band...but they do have some good tunes)

Well, since I like all those from Brothers In Arms I will just vote for other and pick "Your Latest Trick" because it was excluded, but yet popular on the jazz/soft rock stations.
For those that have the greatest hits (http://www.cdnow.com/from=sr-181894/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1210528068/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=DIRE+STRAITS/itemid=623145), you should get the original album (http://www.cdnow.com/from=sr-181894/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1210528068/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=DIRE+STRAITS/itemid=1257486) as well.
"Trick" is so much different studio wise than that live track. :thumb:

Money for nothing (that video could've made it into the Groundbreaking video thread IMHO), closely followed by Walk of Life

Though not a MAJOR fan did like "Money For Nothing"!
I picked other because of the 80's I liked "Skateaway" the best! "Sultans of Swing" was 1978 which I like as well! My "favorite" song of theirs though is from 1979 "Lady Writer"! While I agree Mark's vocals leave something to be desired, there's no doubting his guitar playing capabilities! Especially on this song! :thumb:
