It's a difficult choice, I know...but I am just curious...which 80's artist had the most spectacular videos of the 1980's? Vote NOW!

Jughead Jones
3-12-02, 07:48 PM
I guess I'll provide the first vote...while all of the artists have GREAT videos, and while U2 is my FAVOURITE band...I went with Madonna just on the basis of her originality and creativity!

I went with other. I think the best 2 artists of 80's videos had to be Peter Gabriel and Tom Petty. Neither one of them had a bad video. My favorites from them were.

Peter Gabriel:
"Shock the monkey"
"Don't give up" (with Kate Bush)
"Sledgehammer" (duh)

Tom Petty:
"You got lucky"
"Don't come around here no more"
"Running down a dream"

There are sooo many other great videos by both artists.

Interesting fact:
Even though the MTV music video vangaurd award for lifetime achievement is named after Michael Jackson, the first winner ever was Peter Gabriel.

I can't believe I FORGOT Peter Gabriel!!!

Oh well...at least the "Other" category will be put to good use!:hammer:

It was tough for me to decide between Madonna and MJ, as they both made amazing, ground-breaking and unforgettable videos in the 80s. But, being the true blue Madonnaphile that I am, I had to vote for Maddy!!! :thumb:

I had to say, for sheer originality and inventiveness, Michael Jackson. I'm not his greatest fan, but his videos were usually always entertaining and groundbreaking. :)

Fancy leaving out Peter Gabriel! :tsk:

Lucky for you I voted Jackson, but Gabriel was close behind. Who could possibly forget Thriller? And Jackson had a lot of great videos for his hits.

Had to vote for Duran as I watched them more, but do remember being on holiday in Majorca when the video to 'Thriller' was played in the disco. Everyone stopped to watch it the whole way through. The place had never been that quiet!

If you ain't got Eurhythmics, you ain't got spit ;)!

I used my vote of other to go Eurhythmic...simply because Dave and Annie were (are?) so humble and rare. You always see "Thriller" and "Like A Virgin", but you never see "Sexcrime 1984" or "The King Of Queen Of America". Yeah, there was "Sweet Dreams" and a few others, but they get shown less frequently.

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

I voted for Madonna. Her videos are easily the most creative and famous of the 80's. Runner-up goes to Michael Jackson. I may not be the biggest fan of either, but as for videos, they definitely had the best. :thumb:

Ouch, this was not an easy one to go with, but I chose Michael Jackson. ((Loved the others though!)) It was either him or Madonna...

How could anyone forget his early videos, especially Thriller? I remember everyone at school getting all psyched up to watch it.

I say Vacation by The Go Go's was the best video of the 1980's
and what's so cool is that The Go Go's are now back and released
a new CD called God Bless The Go Go's. Check it out, they still
got the beat. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thegogos2

Listen to their new song as well. :hammer:

Michael Jackson and Duran Duran had very high qulity videos made for their singles! But I would of Stuck at least David Bowie on the poll as he had some big hits and my god Numan!

Ithink other bands if they had the budget ie Depeche Mode would of been able to Produce the same lavish video's! Human Leauge were big but their videos were cheap its all about the label coughing up i suppose !

Anyway i admit i love the videos to Billy Jean by MJ / and Duran Duran Wild Boys !

:goofy:

I voted other could not decide !

I went with Madonna. Very original and different videos. She never stuck to a specific format and that makes her videos enjoyable even today.

I would have loved to vote for Depeche Mode, but their 80's videos look horrible. They never enjoyed shooting videos much until the Music For The Masses videos and it shows.

^Good point about Madonna having videos that didn't stick to a specific formula. As good as Michael Jackson's videos were, most of them featured the "guys and dolls/Westside Story" type theme.

Depeche Mode's videos are stil great in my opinion, yeah the music is still the draw of those early videos, but a groups gotta start somewhere. It's great to see their humble beginnings, nonetheless! :)

I've choosen "other" as i think the New Romantics in general had the best videos. They were actually the first to do videos with a story line. Spandau Ballet's Musclebound and Vienna from Ultravox (yeah of course i like that one) are meantioned as the first videos that have the group as models going through adventures by several music guides.:thumb:

And (In my opinion) U2 didn't have any cool videos till

I would have to say the coolest video was "Images of Heaven" by Peter Godwin. I watched it in Arizona on a show called TV61. it was a UHF channel that showed videos during the early to mid 80's then was gone forever...the video featured Peter falling in love with a woman on the TV screen knowing he could never really have her...it has been a long time since I saw it but I own both vinyl recordings by Peter Godwin!

I voted "Other"'cause A-ha isn't on this list. (isn't it unfair???)
As it's been said, they had so many great videos, specially "Take On Me", the most original and creative I've ever seen in the '80s.
I have to mention Gabriel's "Big Time" & the funny and peculiar Housemartin's "Happy Hour".

Hmmmmmm let me think here...you may just have to twist my arm a bit but DURAN DURAN......LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember waiting for D2 videos like the way I wait for Star wars, Star Trek and now Lord of the Rings movies!!!!! I just couldn't wait to see the next one! I remember watching "Wild Boys" for the first time in total awe!!!!!!!, watching Save a Prayer and wanting to go to Sri Lanka, wanting to sail away with D2 on Rio, walking on the catwalk in Girls on Film...and wondering what in the heck kinda revolt was going on in Reflex?!?! Duran Duran totally represents the best in 80's vids.

Boy thats a good one Jughead! I went with D2 because of a few reasons. They broke some early MTv rules. ( Girls on Film). Then you have to go with the concept idea, Im not saying they were the first but as we all would probally agree Hungry Like the Wolf was a mind blower to all us young MTv junkies. Then they took us on some awesome locations.

Duran Duran all the way the video for Wild Boys is the best video i have ever seen! Save a Prayer and The Reflex are very good as well and Eurythmics and Micheal Jackson made some kick ass videos as well.

This is sooo easy.It shouldn't be a single artist. It was a handful of artists who has savy technical and video directors that really made the 80s totally awesome. I took a different route in choosing the best videos. So I chose the artists who contributed to MTV.

Peter Gabriel-Sledgehammer,Big Time, Shock The Monkey
Genesis-Land of Confusion
Duran Duran-Pretty Much All of Them
Dire Straits-Money For Nothing
The Cars-You Might Think
A-Ha -Take on Me
Michael Jackson-Thriller
Devo-Whip It

If an historian in the future writes about videos of the 1980s he might mention these videos by these artists. All these video's were landmark videos of the 1980s.

Is this some kind of record, keeping a thread alive for 2 years?

Anyway, I had to vote for MJ. When I was a kid, I was nuts for his music. My cousin and I got the gloves for Xmas one year. The gloves came with Jackson 5 trading cards and I remember nobody wanting Jermaine (kind of like how it is now!). One time when I was at Kmart with my mom, they were playing Thriller on the VCR. We didn't have one at home, so I stood there and watched while my mom shopped. She came to get me before it was over and I pitched a fit. The manager told me to tell him the next time I came to the store and he'd play it for me again, but I never took him up on it.

Really liked A-HA! I'm an artist so "Take On Me " was awesome!
Did you ever notice "The Sun Always Shines On TV" was a continuation of the "Take On Me" video?
I always wanted to get both of them in full, back to back on a DVD!
Also liked Duran.Petty.Diamond Dave,Billy Idol and Madonna
Speaking of Madonna...I talked to a model who met Madonna in her "Borderline/Like A Virgin" days. She said she noticed a funky smell eminating from her. Anyway, she ask Madonna how she got her hair to look like that in the videos.Madonna replied "I don't wash it for a week or two"
The smell was her hair!!! AAARRRRRGGGG!!!
Also liked ZZ Top's videos! Had to if your a guy!
Little known fact: JENNA ELFMAN of TV's "Dharma and Greg" toured with ZZ as a "Legs" dancer! She even mentioned this in an episode!
PLEASE! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! Someone has to have a concert boot video of this???!!!

Sure - it was a great continuation or finishing story from their first video.

You can get the videoes on dvd. It was released in 1992 and called "Headlines & Deadlines" which is a greatest hit with all their videoes up to that point. Recommend it :thumb: Also with the same title is the CD that came out at the same time - just the songs there ofcourse!

1. Michael Jackson
2. Madonna
3. Duran Duran
4. Cyndi Lauper
5. Janet Jackson
6. Prince
7. Tears For Fears
8. U2
9. INXS

So Michael Jackson is defenetly the king of videos. He still surprice me with his videos up until today. But I try not to look to close since I don't want to stare at his face too much.

I voted Michael Jackson because he did have groundbreakin videos and pretty much paved the way for other Black artists as far as the showing the videoson MTV. Also, I think Janet had really good videos because she can dance her @*$ off and I grew up idolizing her. As far as Prince, he was a genius (and still is) and Madonna.

I voted for Michael Jackson because he had videos that made u wanna move. But u had to give it up for Michael's sister, Janet, because her videos made u dance. I learned most of dance moves from her videos. My favorite Janet video was Rhythm Nation because it was nothing but straight choreography and the way she hit those moves really made her stand out. Another person who had good music videos in the 80s was Paula Abdul. Straight Up was my favorite one.

Voted other. Depeche Mode made some awesome vids in the 80's and they still do today :)

Duran Duran's videos totally rocked! Rio and Hungrey like the Wolf were pretty great.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Relax"

Not the sanitized "live on stage" version the US got. I mean, the late night gay club one, with all the guys in leather.

Van Halen - "Hot For Teacher" was most excellent.

I guess you guys did not like the late 80's "HEAVY METAL. I'm not going to say I'm sorry, because "Guns and Roses",Def Leopard",Bonjovi,Poison, etc, etc,I was just addicted at the time.Thank God,I never had children.

Ok, i see that michael Jackson is rating highly here. Rightly so, let's face it most of his video's are like mini stories/ movies. I want to throw some of the more animated video's into this topic.
Inxs- New Sensation
A-ha- Take On Me
Nik Kershaw- Wouldn't It Be Good
note: This is just for starters, as i remember more i will add them.

I went with Duran Duran, but then which teenage male from the 80's doesn't remember the video for Girls on Film!!!

My head though says Michael Jackson and Peter Gabriel because they broke new ground with graphics and sophistication.

I think it is safe to say though that any video made before 1982 is now part of the 40th birthday (did we really think this was great) party
