View Full Version : New issue: Libraries vs. copyrights sarge 3-04-02, 06:04 PM http://zdnet.com.com/2100-11-530263.html?legacy=zdnn Cartoon_Chris 3-04-02, 06:33 PM I'm getting tired of this. These companies aren't going to stop until everybody has to pay up to see ANY collection of words on a page, or turn on a TV/radio. This is going further and further beyond the original intent of copyright laws, which were to prevent plagiarism, not this "you can't even LOOK at what this person wrote until you pay up". These bastards are going to stifle ALL artistic progress in the world. I love how the RIAA claims to be looking out for the interests of musicians, but we have lawsuits and benefit concerts left and right by artists tired of getting ripped off by greedy labels locking them into contracts and taking so much money off their album sales. A young, dirt-poor Abe Lincoln supposedly walked miles to return a library book, I guess students can stay home and not learn anything for fun now. My brother turned down a label here for that very reason, Chris. The deal we were offered would have seen us getting ripped off for thousands of dollars, and the added kicker was that none of our music (even that never intended for recording, like my brother's songs for his daughter) could ever be shared without their express consent. F**k that. We've done alot of performances for charities and friends - we're not going to end that. Lately it seems they don't just want rights (and money) to the work you provide for public consumption, they want to own your creative muse, too. It's sickening. space-invader 3-05-02, 07:15 AM yes, this is becoming a VERY sticky issue there are publishers of medical journals out there trying to close down PubMed (a free online database full of most medical journals published...but only produce an abstract, not full text version) this makes no sense to me...just utter greed:mad: if they close that down it will throw all medical research into chaos cultleader 3-06-02, 01:24 PM Whats next, you buy a book, lend it to a friend and some guy in a suit is comes out of your bushes and sues you! Hey,Watch out, anyone who has quotes in your signature,we might all get sued for copyright infringment!:p 80sTrivia 3-06-02, 02:01 PM I suppose these lawyers and organizations want to close down all of the nations libraries, including school and college libraries. It's absolutely ludicrous. Being an author, I count on libraries ordering copies of my books so that people who cannot afford or would ordinarily not purchase my book can at least have access to a copy. Just another example of litigation gone mad... |
