View Full Version : Women of Punk
cultleader 3-02-02, 05:19 PM Ok,who do you think was the ultimate woman of punk?
For me it is definatly Wendy O Williams, she had all the aggression and energy that symbolizes the punk movement(and she was damn sexy too and not afraid to show it)Wendy,in my oppinion, paved the way for strong women in rock-n-roll to be taken seriously as musicians.
And because of my love of the Cramps,I have to give a very close second place to Poison Ivy.
fiya kraka 3-02-02, 05:44 PM I agree with ya, Cultleader. Wendy O:thumb:
djdaffy1227 3-02-02, 07:12 PM Do you really need to ask? Wendy O Williams!
80sTrivia 3-02-02, 07:36 PM I didn't want to break the streak, so I voted for Wendy O as well. ;) She was the ultimate punk diva and a force to be reckoned with. May she rest in peace...
Iluvthe80s 3-02-02, 08:41 PM To echo everyone else...Wendy O. She lived the punk attitude!
OK I'm gonna be the contrary one and vote for Debbie because I've always loved Blondie, but never liked any of the others mentioned. OK, I don't know anything about them, because I'm not a punk fan, but hey, I had to vote for someone.
I voted for Blondie simply because I enjoyed her music more than Wendy's.
VioletFoxx 3-03-02, 01:48 PM I'm with you all the way Cult....Wendy O had it all. There was nothing that intimidated that woman. She was raw punk energy and attitude at it's best. It's a damn shame she's no longer with us. R.I.P. Wendy
xistenza 3-04-02, 11:19 PM Poison Ivy - She is THE WOMAN!!!
She's got the attitude, the looks, and the talent and Lux by her side. Truly an icon of punk!!
The80sAngel 3-05-02, 02:26 AM I cast mine for Poison Ivy, with Wendy O in so close a tie that it was the fact that there was only one vote for Ivy that brought me to it. ;)
this charming man 3-06-02, 07:06 PM I went for Poison Ivy, she was probably more punkier than Siouxsie Sioux who is my second choice. But if it had been the coolest punk, Siouxsie would have won.

I totally agree! What's great about both of them is that after all these years, they still look great and carry out their punk antics.
Megaloman 3-25-02, 01:23 AM It's all about Wendy. When is VH1 doing a "Behind the Music" about her? They have done all these useless bands, and NO Wendy.

Christine 3-25-02, 04:53 PM My vote went to Debbie Harry of Blondie. I'm not a punk fan, but I like some of Blondie's music. :)
Ted Nugent 3-25-02, 05:01 PM I went with Debbie Harry, I'm not a punk fan but, I like some of her songs. :)
Steve Savicki 4-09-02, 09:15 PM Since I voted for Wendy Williams here (http://80sxchange.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=9807), I'll go with Exene Cervenka here because I loved her version of Wild Thing (http://www.cdnow.com/from=sr-181894/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=515359992/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=X/itemid=445693)!
I especially loved it when it was played back to back with Sam Kinnison's version! (http://www.cdnow.com/from=sr-181894/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=515359992/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=KINISON*SAM/itemid=150709)
X's came out in '84 and Sam Kinnison only reinforced radio stations to replay X's again!
I voted for Debbie Harry.
Other...Toyah Wilcox...specially in the beginning...
Other.
Arianna Forster (AKA Ari Up) vocalist for The Slits.

Second place would go to Debbie Harry. I wasn't really much of a Wendy O fan....
I voted for WOW, I have never seen anyone else make electrical tape and shaving cream look so good.

I chose Blondie's Debbie Harry as well.
Glenn Gulia 8-28-04, 01:19 PM I went with Debbie
Had to go with Debbie....
I really loved her. I really wasnt a big fan of Wendy.
SweetestJezebel 8-30-04, 01:08 AM Wendy O...she was TOTALLY punk!!
whistledog 9-13-04, 08:42 PM 'Atomic' is still my favourite Blondie song :thumb:
Debbie Harry was so versatile, she could sing anything: Disco (Heart of Glass), Reggae (The Tide is High), and New Wave (Call Me), Rap (Rapture)
Exene, from X.
Joan Jett.
Bobbi Brat, singer for Red Scare.
Kira Roessler, Black Flag.
I never considered Debbie Harry to have anything to do with punk; she was more New Wave or pop. jmo
Kira Roessler, Black Flag.
I remember the first time that Henry busted out with "Kira's got the 10 1/2"

I cant believe no body has said nina hagen!!! She is the queen mother of punk rock for christs sakes!!! Also beki bondage from vice squad was pretty amazing.
Monty007® 8-06-06, 03:49 AM Wendy O Williams
I voted for Blondie because of two reasons... I loved her style and the others I've never heard of. The latter of the two made that one fairly simple.
Livinginthe80's 11-09-07, 09:48 AM Debbie Harry, seemed to be a real punk icon to me at least for the New york scene. She was really hot when she was younger, not now. I'm still a Blondie fan though, anybody notice how glazed her eyes are in the Heart Of glass music video? I had to look up Wendy O. to recall who she was. I only know 1 or 2 songs from the Plasmatics.
Torchwood Fan 2-02-08, 11:57 AM I picked Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex, because IMHO she was a very underrated performer.
chooch210 2-02-08, 12:03 PM Debbie Harry
frothy latte 6-19-08, 02:47 PM Debbie Harry(Blondie)
