What did everyone collect in the 80s?

Here's my collections...

friendship pins (safety pins with beads)
friendship bracelets (made with embroidery floss)
jelly bracelets
aluminum bangle bracelets
different rock star buttons (to pin on my jean jacket)
guitar picks (from all the guys that I knew that played) I still have the pouch full of them!
scratch and sniff stickers
fuzzy stickers (for the sticker book) http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
Duran Duran pictures and articles from magazines (all put in a photo album along with the posters that I had on the wall) still have that album!
Motley Crue posters

hmm... thats all I can think of right now...

Collecting was fun!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

You mentioned my favorite, Duran Duran!!!! I too, had walls plastered with posters, and "pin-ups." I used to rip articles out of magazines, and put them in a scrap book. Still have all of my stuff, too. Do you think it will be worth something? Maybe it is since some of the members are no longer with the group.
I occasionally collected stickers, and friendship pins.
But I think the D2 stuff was the largest. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Cool. I used to wear Friendship Bracelets. I think at one time I had about 12 of them on. I had one that lasted well into the 90's. Think it finally broke off in about '92.

I didn't actually collect them, but I do remember the friendship pins with the beads. Waaaaaaay back, my sister and her friends used to have them. They did however give me a few http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif I believe they pinned them onto my shoelaces http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

Ihad a huge sticker collection until I left it out in the rainhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif I remember the other things but I didnt have any of those collections.Rob Lowe was my man in the 80s! My walls were covered with his pictures. Every time I got a new picture I had to rearrange the others to fit the new picture in the right place.
Oh yeah,I still have my heavy metal scrapbook with all the info I could find of my fav groups then. Each article is trimmed nicely with pictures and table of contents!

I used to collect all manners of Star Wars stuff.I had all the toys from the first 2 movies and a couple from the 3rd.As I got older,I packed it all away and when I was about 17 my mom found the boxes in the crawl space and tossed them out.A couple years ago,I was reading this action figure magazine and saw what all that stuff is worth,I damn near fainted and then cried when I realized it was all long gone.I still bring that up to my mom once in awhile.I could have been set up as far as cash goes, for some time.I had everything, even the sears exclusive figures. But it's al gone,GONE!!!
but I'm over it......................GONE,GONE,GONEhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00buaaah.gif

I've collected Star Trek memorabilia since 1977 up until a couple of years ago. It just got too expensive to try to keep up with everything that was in the market. Today, I still have toys, wall plates, blueprints, pictures, cards, and other Star Trek collectables packed away in 5 or 6 boxes.

I am in the same boat as you, Cultleader. I had all that Star Wars stuff. Sure enough, Mom chucked all of it. Oh the humanity of it all. Wait a minute! Screw the humanity of it. Oh the money!!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00buaaah.gif

This is kind of a first-to-last journey through Mary's toy box / closet...

Star Wars toys & comic books (yes, the Marvel ones!) http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif
Barbie dolls
Rainbow Brite dolls
Teddy bears, stuffed animals of all kinds
My Little Ponies
Breyer horses
Scratch'n'Sniff stickers
Jelly bracelets
Friendship bracelets
Converse All-Stars (at one point, I had 6 pairs, 3 of which came from thrift shops!)
Army/Navy surplus clothes (my classic late 80s wear was always topped by my great-uncle's Navy jacket from the Korean War... still have it, but the zipper's broken!)
Rock band buttons, esp. the Smiths and the Cure (Hey, anyone else here spend their summer paychecks buying stuff from the Burning Airlines catalog?)

I still collect stuffed animals, Star Wars toys, and Breyers, though I'm less serious about it. I'm only missing one of the Queen Amidala portrait dolls. I like to sit them up next to my 1978 Princess Leia 12" doll and sniffle "If only!... So sad!" http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

I'm sure it's a pretty big club,I mean who thought back then that, that stuff would be worth so much. Now whenever I have a rough month with my bills,I make sure to call mom and let remind her of all the money she just threw away. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
I collect action figures now(anything horror related)and other horror memorabilia,so maybe one day I'll have a valuable collection, but the star wars thing still stings, especially when I pick up the latest issue of ToyFair mag. and look at the price guides.
As Dr.Smith(from lost in space)would say..."Oh the pain,the pain"

My best friend had the Star War stuff. We used to play for hours with them. I guess that because we all played with our toys and then they got thrown away that thats what makes them worth so much now. Oddley enough the best friend I spoke of is named Mike and we played with my Barbies then also???? Who knew?!

You're right about that topcat. The more popular a toy was, the more valuable it becomes. My Star Trek collection that I have packed away are all in mint condition.
Even from as far back as the action figures from the late 70's and early 80's are still in their unopened original packages. Old collectables grow in their value, but in their original packages, the value goes up even more.

I collected the friendship pins & bracelets, Unicorn figurines and had tons of Garfield stuff posters of Jon Bon Jovi! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//icon20.gif ...and, do I have any of it now?? No......my sister was smoking in my room and set it on fire!!! She dumped the ashtray in the garbage without waiting for it to fully cool down. (what a dork.) Why she was in my room, I'll never know. I didn't even smoke. So, all my precious collections went up in smoke. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00buaaah.gif

You have another Duran Duran collector here. I still have lots of the stuff. Now I just collect 80's memorabilia. I still have all my concert shirts from the 80's too.

MAN! I was ALL ABOUT collecting in the 80's... didn't have that many collections, but what I did have I was obsessive about, and went WAYYY overboard.
STICKERS: At the peak of my collecting, early 80's I had 19 photo albums full - the 3 ring binder kind of album that lets you add pages. They were all so full that they would not stay closed, and were all permanently "fanned out". Scratch n' Sniff, fuzzy, tinies, and remember those cool plastic stickers with the green iridiscent goo crap inside? You could mush them & they'd change hue. Were they called "Mystics"?

SMURFS: In the early 80's, when I was around 12, I had almost 400 plastic smurfs. You could not walk in my bedroom without acquiring a heel bruise or two from stepping on a misplaced Smurfette or Papa Smurf. I also had all their cool acoutrements, like the mushroom houses, Water wells, cabins, Smurf General Store, and on and on and on...

FRIENDSHIP PINS & BRACELETS: Me and my best friend would spend the night at each other's house and it up all night making those damn pins, which you could then make into bracelets comprised of nothing byt pens and beading floss... we would make hundreds of pins in a night for almost no money, cause the pins and beads were dirt cheap, then we'd sell them to all of our stupid friends and rake in the elementary schooler's allowances hand over fist! Money to buy more Smurfs & stickers!!!

I couldn't collect much because we were constantly moving around. When I was a kid I was really into the Smurfs.
Story Cassettes or whatever they're called were also popular. They'd take a story and adapt it for kids and you'd have these people act it out on tapes. And Enid Blyton books. I had the whole Mallory Towers series which I doubt means much to you Americans out there. And also the Famous Five although those were only checked out from the library.

Then there were all the magazine articles of my favorite band Kajagoogoo (I kept missing features on Visage because it seemed that whenever I was in Germany they weren't writing about Steve Strange anymore and I only found out about him when I was in England.) Alas, those too have gone more's the pity.

and Pierrot posters , basically anyhting to do with Pierrot the sad harlequin. Do you know him? I don't think he was popular in America. I think he's a Japanese creation. All the posters were signed Mira Fujita.

That's all I can come with for now.

Chris

I didn't really collect anything in the 80s......except maybe boyfriends.

I do have a modest collection of Beanie Babies now, though.
