View Full Version : Jeans
Remember the jeans that were normal on the backside but were a pattern on the front? Usually flowers or something like that. I had a faded blue pair that had roses all over the front, and another pair that had comics printed all over them. Or the straight sweaters that looked kind of like soccer shirts, but went down to the knees. I also remember a big fad in my very small school : putting a streak of blonde in your hair on the side of your head "a la Mad Max." and friendship bracelets/pins (that you put on your shoelaces).

morningmyst 3-26-01, 04:13 PM Yeah! I remember all of those. My daughter is now doing the friendship pins on her shoelaces. Now all of her friends want one!

Purple Velvet Bohemian 3-26-01, 04:31 PM I remember those really long sweaters! And if they had a deep V-neck in them we would wear them backwards, and you had to wear them with straight legged jeans and duck shoes. Remember duck shoes? They kind of look like fireman's boots only they were shoes. I loved my ducks.

Shawn2k.. I swear we went to the same school!!! Thats funny... everything you just described was my wardrobe to a T !!! The blonde straek in the hair and everything... then we used to color just our bangs blonde and leave the rest brown...
I loved those jeans, too!!! I had a few different types... but my all time favorite pair were Jordache, really tight, black in the front and grey in the back... (stonewashed, of course)
and my other fave were floral print in front, blue in the back... It's too bad I didn't still have them... thats a riot!! The long sweaters were great too!! Then I got into Flourescent sweatshirts... the brighter the better!!
jelly bracelets and I loved friendship bracelets and friendship pins... (safety pins with different colored beads on them attached to your shoelaces)
Man!! We knew how to dress!!!!

My favorite jeans were a light blue with black stripes that zipped on the sideshttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif(I think they were Gitano) Remember wearing turtlenecks and pulling your necklace over the neck part?? A sign you are getting old: When you say " OMG those jeans look just like what I used to wear in high school" Which I did recentely http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif The girls that tan in my salon are all wearing 80s style jeans http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//cool.gif

cultleader 3-27-01, 03:16 AM When I was in high school,we used to take regular blue jeans and pour bleach all over them so they had these bleached out blotches all over, then we'd shred the hell out of them.I even got kicked out of school once because my jeans had rips down the front of the legs. They looked really cool but the bleach tended to weaken the fabric and within a month or two they just fell apart into nothingness. The one thing I really miss is when all the chicks used to wear those jeans that were so tight that you just had to wonder how the hell they got into them.God,I really miss that.

Ok.....here's the secret Cultleader......Getting into the tight jeans was an aerobic exercise. Seriously. Sometimes, it'd take 2 of us to get on a pair of jeans. We'd have to lay on the bed and suck in for all it's worth to get them done up. Oh, and we had to make sure that there was someone there to help us get up. For the first 10 or 15 minutes, it wasn't a pretty picture! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif I'd rather see someone in tight jeans now, than that baggy crap that's out there now. Well, here is a new twist on jeans for you. Remember when we were all wearing the ripped jeans? Well! A friend of mine and I got the wild idea to do something different. We each took a pair of blue jeans, wadded them up into a ball and shot them with a 12 guage shotgun. They had all these little holes all over them. Very different, but it didn't go over to big... Oh, well. At least we tried to be different.

Pebbles, Did you mean your post to read that you could either look like a bum OR look good enough for somebody to take a bite out of you? At least that is the way I read it.
I used to wear tight jeans, but now find them too uncomfortable. Seems to me comfort is more important than looking good these days.
I used to love girls in the stirrup pants. with a sweater over them, trying to hide thier butts!
Anybody remember in like 84 or 85 when the floral print jeans were big, or was that a Philly thing?

Anyhting you can remember about styles, colours, trends, designs, names, etc. If you remember the approximate time of the trend that would be great too - should be quite interesting to see if there was much difference between the various parts of the world.
Thanks in advance!

ImSoooSure 6-09-01, 05:10 AM Well, the funniest jeans I remember seeing were the "Who Shot J.R.?" Jeans. I forget who the maker was. It must have been in the early 80's though. 1980 or 81. It was of course the year that J.R. Ewing got shot on Dallas and everyone in America was speculating on who shot him. So, there were these jeans everywhere that had it embroidered on the back pocket. I saw them at the Jones Store in Kansas City.
well... there were acidwashed jeans, stonewashed, (remember trying to bleach your first pair?) the two toned jeaznd that were like one color in the front and another on the back (I had ones that were grey in front, black in the back) floral print jeans... (had a purse to match) pinstriped jeans... then of course... my all time fave.. ripped jeans!
Man.. where did those styles go? They were too cool <img src="cool.gif" border="0">

That's so funny! I never saw those. But I remember the time. I'm surprised they don't have a similiar "Simpsons" theme for jeans. pretty sad, no?
I remember how chic I felt in my Gloria Vanderbelt jeans. That must have been '82 or something.
Pinstriped jeans! We should bring all that stuff back. how fun.
I don't know about the acidwashed ones. Never crazy about those.

For those of who wear Wranglers (OK, the hicks), I don't believe they've changed much in decades.
Iluvthe80s 6-10-01, 01:42 AM In the early 80's there was the big rage with the Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans and do you remember the Sasson Jeans (the slogan was: Ooh,la,la Sasson!) The floral print jeans were mentioned and that was the other I thought about.
cyber_gonzo 6-10-01, 01:52 AM anyone use to put those square patches on the jeens to cover holes and whatnot???? I think they were iron on.
A pair that were not mentioned were the ones that zipped up in the back and had the bow on top the zipper. I believed it was 88 or 89. You could wear those with your favorite heavy metal t-shirt and long hair. Colored acid wash jeans were another one mentioned. Remember when girls used to pull slouch socks over the jeans? Yikes!

Haaaa! The girls in my school used to wear those with pink sweaters. (Of course '88-'89 was eighth grade for me) I was already a mini-goth by then, and I got my kicks laughing at them.
I did own a pair of pinstriped jeans with *dies* pink stripes. I wore those until they were way too small, because I loved them so much. ('84-85)
Urethane 7-06-01, 10:08 PM Levi's used to make some great jeans for men back in the Eighties. I used to wear Levi's 512 student fit (tight fittn' peg leggers) but Levi's no longer makes 512's for men <img src="frown.gif" border="0"> or any type of jean for men as far as I'm concerned, the maket now is for the "kids". As far as women's jeans, I used to (and still do) love to see women in painted on Chic, and Guess jeans, especially the no back pocket type, front exposed button fly, and zipped or buttoned ankles. Yes I also loved women in the two tone jeans Tina mentioned earlier. Hell, women just wore awesome jeans in the Eighties.
nolanbuc 7-09-01, 09:15 AM Anyone remember the Jordache jeans, with the three white seam stitches going up the side of the legs? And the horse head on the tush pocket? They were all the rage in the early-mid 80's. (mostly girls, but some guys wore 'em.)
wavemaster 7-09-01, 11:09 AM Oh yeah...Jeans! One of the important marks between totally cool or hopeless out... <img src="cool.gif" border="0">
There were the "moonwashed" types, bleached ones, with white stripes in varying size and forms, embroidered, those to be tied on the ankles or all the way up to the hips...and worst were those which were checkered like the sports jackets of used-car dealers in cheap american movies - bleech! At the end of the 80s, real used Levi´s 501 came in style, and I always wondered about the people who paid more money to get their hands on one of those as for a "regular" one...
Jeans had to be either cut tight fit or "carrot" style, and it was no sign of poverty when they ended a few inches above the ankles - they were like that, or you wore your socks above the ends.
The only "hip" brand I can remember was Pash, but there were surely a number of copies around. Those who were equipped with lots of cash wore Benetton or Boss Jeans, the rest went by with what they found at the usual places.
Gosh...now you got me smiling when I think of my outfit way back in the 80s - and there´s never a timemachine at hand when you need one! <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
This is great guys! Thanks for your contributions <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
Can we expand a bit here? What about denim in general? Miniskirts, denim jackets, etc.?
Kristina
wavemaster 7-09-01, 01:13 PM Sorry, but I never used to wear miniskirts... <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
Had some jeans jackets, a "straight" one by C17 and one which was cut like a spencer (by...ahem...err...okay, C&A <img src="redface.gif" border="0"> ).
On the straight one I have attached some stickers, most of them featuring millitary signs of U.S. forces. One day, it was stolen right out of my car - dang, replacing that broken window was more costly than the jacket...
Jeans shirts were also quite popular, with perlmutt buttons and metal collar tips. The more daring ones wore embroidered ones, the country style...
The ladies which had wearing denim bustiers drove me sometimes on the brink of my sanity - forgive me and my lecherous thoughts, but hey, I was a teen back then... <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

I could be wrong, but it seems like I remember it being a Gloria Vanderbilt ad.....and it was her daughter. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
Dragonfly1167 7-15-01, 06:25 PM I LOVE this topic.
501's were always cool.
I had a pair of Zena's that I loved. Jordache were the ultimate cool jeans before Guess. Remember Ditto's? OOPS, that was the 70's I think.
Remember the ones that used to zip all the way around? They also had a lace tie up and a button fly version. They were called something City Blues. (someone help me here)
The jeans were so tight back then you had to use a hanger to zip them up while you laid on the bed. Sometimes you had to have a friend help you.
Jeans had to be Levi 501's or designer brand. And if it was the early eighties you might have worn leg warmers (a'la Flashdance) over your jeans.
I took the wife shopping yesterday at JCPennys. I was surprised. There was a HUGE section of those stretchy jeans. Alot of them were the Gloria Vanderbilt (sp?) in all kinds of colors. (pink, blue, orange, white etc.)

I havent seen Sergio Valente mentioned. Those were my first pair of designer jeans, and I paid for them myself, as my mom refused to pay for something with the name on it.
Did anyone used to roll the bottoms of the jeans up? Maybe around 82-83?

They were skin tight and went to just above the knee (ooo sexy)..I had a pair that had a floral print all the way down one leg and the normal denim down the other. woo.
I also had this great LONG dark blue denim skirt..that had one of those tight waist seams..that then tapered out into a full length skirt. I *loved* that skirt.
and then there was the mini skirt. It had one main feature. Zip up the back. lol
Dancingdoll1986 7-27-01, 02:46 PM Okay...I have a few!
My very first pair of designer jeans were Gloria Vanderbilt. I got them in 6th grade, (1980.) I also got a pair of lavender thin cords by her as well. In Jr. High, I basically wore Jordache. I had about 15 pairs, all with different designs. Then in HS, it was Guess? all the way. I had overalls, a jean jacket and mini-skirts all by Guess?. I did have a pair of floral print jeans from The Limited. And a pair of those "flappy style" ones from Limited Express. (I think 1988?)I had pinstripe baggy pants from Foxmore as well.
Right before I went to Kent my freshman year, I bought a mini-skirt that was flat in the front, and the back panel was 4 layers of ruffled jean material.
I still have that mini-skirt. It still fits. How silly! (That I have actually saved it, and have tried it on!)Still wear the jean jacket! I also have a denim one that has white leather fringe on the back and down both sleeves. I still have that, just to have it around.

80sTrivia 7-28-01, 12:06 PM I remember my older sister, Paula, lying across the bed using the end of a coat hanger to pull the zipper up on her extremely tight pair of Calvin Klein jeans! She made me help her once (Ewwww!!!) <img src="eek.gif" border="0">
Dancingdoll1986 7-28-01, 05:03 PM Not so silly!!!
I used to lay on my bed, feet on the bed, knees bent, and I'd thrust my hips up so that I could zip them up!!!

80sTrivia 7-30-01, 08:51 AM I think its amazing that girls from the 80s didn't destroy the circulation in their legs from wearing those panted on jeans back in the early 80s!!! But, I must say, they sure looked good in them!!! <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Dancingdoll1986 7-30-01, 02:48 PM Let me clue you in on a little secret of mine.
Those damn jeans were SO FREAKIN' TIGHT, that not only didn't I go to the ladies room all day, (not to mention that I TOTALLY refused to take gym), I wouldn't eat at all. (Hmmm.....maybe it was the paranoia that triggered me!)
Yup...I would gorge when I got home. Then, I'd go to dance classes downtown, get home, try to do homework, and then, well, you know.
Thank you, tight jeans!!
