View Full Version : Babysitting Pay Rates
Now that I am forking over $5/hr to my babysitters, I wonder what others were paid back in our babysitting days.
I began babysitting in Maryland in 1980 for $1/hr and by the time I quit in 1986 my rate was clear up to $1.25/hr. (I had one mother who knew exactly what 7/60ths of $1.25 was too.)
So I am wondering, what did you earn babysitting, and what state, province, or country were you in at the time?
I babysat in Indiana when i was 10 that was 20 years ago.. wow I am old. And i was paid 75.00 a week,, for 8 hour days 5 days a week. Man i was getting ripped off. But back then it was a good paying job. So i calculated getting paid 1.87 an hour.
morningmyst 9-12-01, 05:24 AM I was getting paid about $2/hr...I lived in Oregon...That was to help cover the cost of gas getting to and from their house. I once watched these 2 kids, and the parents were 3 hours late getting home from the bar. I demanded to be paid overtime!! The wife was reluctant to do it, but the hubby forked out the cash. It was the last time I watched their kids!!!
When my kids were younger, I paid $6/hr...but, now that they're older and more independent, it's down to $3.50...maybe 4 :)
I think I got around 1$ per kid per HR.
However because all the women wanted to impress my dad (he was a ladies man) I was able to get a little extra!

Haha! I think I was paid the same as you, TC. I usually sat for my 4 little neighbors, (ranging from age 3 to age 8, their mom was always a little frazzled!) so that worked out to $4 an hour. I was in Maine, in a very poor neighborhood.
Later on in high school, in the decadent 90s, I was paid more, but that was at night, and I couldn't just send a kid down the block to my apartment to get my mother if something went wrong... :D
Ted I am now totally picturing you as the pre-adolescent boy who had a crush on Elizabeth Shue in Adventures in Babysitting LOL. That would make TopCat Elizabeth Shue ;)
I got paid a dollar an hour to babysit. I hated babysitting. As soon as I was in Grade 9 I got a job in the summer at a lodge working for $3.00 an hour (that was a mint in 83).
I pay my sitter in the summer $35.00 a day but she is an Early Childhood educator whose home is right across the street from (talk about convience). I'm poor in the summer :) but my daughter has the time of her life. My son babysits occasionally at night once she is alseep because as typical syblings they would fight.
