People who had a part in the 80's or music events of the 80's:

1973 David Bowie collapses from what his promoter calls "total exhaustion" following a Valentine's Day show at Radio City Music Hall.

1974 According to Rolling Stone, David Bowie has turned down a request to compose the first gay national anthem.

1977 The B-52's play their first gig in Athens, Ga. Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright finishes recording his first solo album, Wet Dream, at Superbear Studios in France.

1980 In New York, Lou Reed marries Sylvia Morales.

1981 Singer Billy Idol leaves his band Generation X to pursue a solo career.

1984 Elton John marries Renate Blauel.

1986 Even Frank Zappa thought Miami Vice was cool. He appears on tonight's episode as "Mr. Frankie," a crime boss.

1987 No. 1 on the pop singles chart today is Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer."

1988 Composer Frederick Loewe, who with Alan Lerner wrote the musical Camelot and somehow turned Richard Burton into a singer, dies in Palm Springs, Calif.

1990 The Rolling Stones play their first gig in Japan and they're doing it right. Tickets to the Korakuen Dome show in Tokyo cost $70 and they pack the place with 50,000 fans.

1996 Prince - currently calling himself the Artist - marries his dancer Mayte Garcia.

1999 Elton John appears as himself on a special Valentine's Day edition of The Simpsons.

2000 Kiss announce their farewell tour. The reunited foursome will don the makeup one last time, then sell off the stage props from a 30-year career in an auction.

2001 Michael Jackson appears at New York's Carnegie Hall to explain what his Heal the Kids charity is all about. He's "trying to help adults and parents realize it's in our power to change the world our children live in."
