I know these sunglasses came out before the 80's, but they made a come back during the 80's. Tom Cruise wore them in "Risky Business" and Don Johnson did on "Miami Vice". I still have the pair I bought in 1986. Anybody else?

Yup! Right here. I had both the black and tortoise shell wayfarers in high school. Great sunglasses!

I still sell them at work... people still buy them, they kind of went out of style in hollywood but they are still popular.

My poor husband... he had a gorgeous pair of tortoiseshell Wayfarers in the 80s and 90s, but he recently lost them. :(

*actual question for optician in the room* Tina, can you get Wayfarers with prescription lenses? That would be the perfect birthday gift for him... he wears glasses now instead of contacts. Thankies!

ABSOLUTLEY MaryC!!

Wayfarer's hold a prescription quite nicely!

You got a Lenscrafters close by? They could really help you out! Let me know if you decide to go ahead with it.. I may be able to help you out, too!

I had a pair of Raybans, but I preferred the mirrored sunglasses that had perfectly round lenses. I called them John Lennon glasses. The best ones were the ones that you could flip the lenses up on.

Those Lennon glasses were cool! I always wore the black Wayfarers though.

I can see you, your brown skin shining in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and those wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer are gone

...I'll be hooked on that for days now!

I had two pair of tortoise shell wayfarers - gave them away sometime in the 90s :) They were really cool back then though :D

I had no idea what these were! They are mentioned in Don Henley's song, "Boys Of Summer", and I never knew what the hell he was talking about until recently...

Had a pair of the black ones but then started wearing Vaurnets then graduated to Gargolyes and then to Oakleys in the 90's.

I still sport my RayBan Aviators but every now and then I my wayfarers...they still are so classic and look good on most people, contrary to a lot of new trendy ones.

I had several pairs of Raybans that I've managed to lose over the years. I bought a pair of expensive Oakleys a few years back and lost them, too. Now I just stick to cheap sunglasses that I don't have to worry about losing or breaking!!!

In the '80s my roommate Lynn worked for VisionWorks, and she used to get us discounts on Raybans.
We both had them in 1984, I lost mine somewhere and she got me another pair.
Now I have a pair of Maui Jims that look similar to the RayBans.

I'm on my second pair of Wayfarers (I lost a pair at a Cake concert in Nashville in '02). The first were black the new ones are tortoise. Two particulars:

1. If you want your Wayfarers to look like the ones in The Blues Brothers, Risky Business, etc. then you now have to explicity ORDER the "small" Wayfarer. Luxottica bought Ray-Ban from Bausch & Lomb in 1998 and what Luxottica now calls the Wayfarer used to be called the Wayfarer II and has larger lenses. I am still using some of the last B & L US made kind, so that's a moot point for me. The new ones are a little nicer (they have spring hinges) and are made in Italy.

2. You will have to pay extra, and still you may have to beg the optician, to get real glass Rx lenses. Since Ray-Bans come with glass, I feel they should stay that way. I wore my black ones for a few years (with contacts) with the factory lenses before having plastic Rx lenses put in them. Those plastic lenses weren't the right color, and the glasses never looked or felt right with them because they were too light weight, too. The optician spent half an afternoon trying to match the peculiar grey-green color and failed, assuring me that it was as close as he could get. The end result sucked. The glass lenses that I have demanded in the tortoise pair are perfect...the glasses look like Ray-Bans.

Sorry, my insurance doesn't cover glasses, so out-of-pocket expense makes me a demanding optical customer, and Ray-Bans were considered a badge of maturity in my family. I bought mine with my second paycheck. That pair of DiamondHard Aviators is at the bottom of Chickamauga Lake, a casualty of a Jetskiing wipeout.
