View Full Version : What junk food do wish was still around from the 80s?
Gee, I remember heaps of ice creams and lollies from back then that I wished I could taste again. Did you guys get the KISS ice creams over there? Mum used to get me a box of them on shopping day. There was also the Incredible Hulk, Return of the Jedi, Smurf - which was a split ice cream, Redskins ice creams. There was also one called Skona which had pieces of dried apricot in it and was YUMMY! There were Chickadee chips (or as you guys callthem crisps) - similar to twisties but chicken taste, pizza type chips which were my favs. I remember when that exploding rock gum was really popular, red licorice strips which were called firehoses. Those I absolutely miss most of all. I love red licorice!!Mmmmmmmmmm....Oops sorry I'm drooling all over the keyboard! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif So many great junk food back then I can't remember them all. What do you guys remember and salivate over still today?

Roemello 6-15-00, 02:27 PM What do I remember....let's see. How about candy cigarrettes? Those were ok. I remember there used to be this gum that came in a toothpaste dispenser...that was pretty funky. Ugh...I forget what most of the stuff was called! I can see it in my head, but the name's aren't coming to me!

apocalypso 8-19-00, 12:55 AM It's not really a "food," but I miss the old soft drink Pepsi Light. It was like a diet lemon-Pepsi and the only diet Pepsi product that I liked.
I also miss the best sandwich in the world, which they made at a place called My Hero deli in State College, PA. It was marinated vegetables in a pita pocket, with a little pepper jack cheese and a dallop of Russian dressing. Years later I finally developed a reasonable facsimile. Mmm!

What i really miss is Garbage Pail Kids gum! I dont know- for some reason it was just emminently more attractive then any other kind of junkfood. I can smell AND see them beautiful wax wrapped pack a 10 cards now. 25ç baby and here's Electric Mike lookin at YOU babe ;-)
I also noticed an ALARMING supply shortage of Tab in my area. How about you guys?

do you remember 'Cool Shark' ice blocks? they were 'cool'! oh and Frankenstein iceblocks, with that weird squishy jelly thing in it - I think it was the one were when you touch the wrapper and an image would appear!? remember that? now that was freaky! I'm not sure if they were Frankenstein or Buck Rogers or something?!?

ReagansRenegade 9-16-00, 12:35 AM Hey now! Whats wrong with TAB? /ubb/smilies/00hmph.gif
two of my favorite junk foods in the 80s were pop rocks and sponge toffee - both of which I hate now lol. School lunch was a well balanced meal of Pepsi and Hickory Sticks (soooo health conscious back then).
That vegie sandwich sounds really good. Care to pass on the recipe? Now I'm craving a Chabata bun with spinach and feta cream cheese, lettuce, tomato and cucumber with a little light ranch dressing (don't knock it until you try it - awesome!)

The Swarm 10-30-00, 06:16 PM Ok, here we go:
Shark Bites
BooBerry Cereal (the real stuff, nut the saccharine crap they pass off as BooBerry now)
Pop Rocks (the fizzy candy I believe has been mentioned)
Nibs-red licorice bites
Smurfberry Crunch cereal
I really liked these things that were billed as "diet" food, yet reminded me of tootsie rolls. I think they were called Slim Sticks but I'm not sure. They came individually wrapped and were way chocolatey, kind of a off-pink foil/paper wrapper.
Bounty candy bars, knock off of Mounds and Almond Joy
Freshen Up Gum, but it's still hanging on too I think
ReagansRenegade 11-01-00, 07:48 PM Saccherin junk is right! Whats with all the weird artificial poisen they are putting everything in nowadays?
When people ask "Why dont things taste good anymore", all they have to do is read ingredients list on the package!
Remember, this is why coke and all other non-diet drinks suck now- they are using CORN SYRUP in place of SUGAR! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//yucky.gif
Also, dont forget every other product now has corn syrup (god!) in place of sugar in EVERYTHING.
Add to that soybean oil, which is proven to produce excess ESTROGEN in men! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//VIBRATOR.gif
Its a nightmare, plain and simple.
I think my mom is trying to get me to consume soybean products at every opportunity. Im going to add to that to her profile too. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00angry.gif

& the high school's soybean burgers! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
Wow - reading through the posts I can tell there’s a whole world of junk food out there that I missed out on! Didn’t we have junk food in Europe?! The only things I can remember as such are Hubba-Bubba (sp?) gum and those sweets on a chain (piece of string) that you could bite off. Either I’m getting too old to remember this stuff or I lived a bloody wholesome life! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
And now I really really have to ask...what on earth is TAB?? Please...enlighten me!

* Hooplas (one of my favs) Ring shaped flavored with Nacho cheese or plain corn chip.
* Jello Pudding Pops
* Jolt Cola
* Pepsi Light and Pepsi Free

Iluvthe80s 5-03-01, 07:22 AM I miss Pudding Pops. Those Bellbeefers they used to sell at Taco Bell. All it was is taco meat on a small hamburger bun but they were good. I know this isn't really junk food but in the early 80's there was this seasoning stuff called Tuna Twist made by Nabisco. It came in packets that you added to your tuna salad. I miss that.http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00grin.gif

How about Jell-O Pudding Pops? I loved those things... and I can't forget C-3PO's Cereal, which I loved, though it was only out for a year or so.

I don't know if I said this before, but I absolutely loved the Hubba Bubba spearmint flavored bubble gum. They don't even make Hubba Bubba anymore, so I chew Big Red. The Freshen Up Spearmint and Eclipse Spearmint are also delicious.

Trixter 12-09-01, 12:03 PM I wish I could drink the satisfying elixer known as ORANGE CRUSH!! I can't seem to find it anywhere!!! Is it still made? Being from Colorado originally, it was unofficially the drink of the Denver Broncos (Go Broncos!) since they were known as the 'orange crush'!
Iluvthe80s 12-09-01, 12:18 PM I've seen Orange Crush down here, but in selective stores. I see more of the Minute Maid Orange than anything.

Here, they belong to the regular program of McD...hated them when I had sold my soul (-->workforce) for them because the sauce smelled (and looked a bit...) like, ahem, youmayknow when being cold from the bucket. Overcame my negative emotions...now they belong to my favourite McD food. ;)
For American junk food, we have to see our Wal Mart. Some items I can remember are Jolt Cola, Hershey chocolate bars and some nacho chips (can´t remember the name right now).

Hmmm... Isn't the 2006 World Cup in Germany? Must think about a sojourn for a game and a McRib. :D
Bogie, McDonalds has the McRib right now on their New Tastes Menu. I was in there yesterday and saw them advertised. I don't know about up there though.
There's two kinds of junk food that I miss, one is Doritoes Taco flavor. I haven't seen them in years and I crave them. The other is McDonald's Big Mac's.
No, I don't mean the Big Mac's of these days where you have to left the bun open like a blanket only to find two silver dollar sized pattys under it. I miss the Big Mac of the 80's when the burger looked just like the one on the commercials. :p
I think they have come out with a new Doritoes Taco flavor, Sarg. Maybe it's Taco flavored potato chips? I'm gonna have to check our local stores now, to make sure.
Does anyone remember the long-neck soda pop bottles that you used to return to get a 10 cent deposit back on each one? They came in 8 packs. When we were little, we thought we were soooo lucky when we got to have one for ourselves instead of sharing. LOL I guess you gotta have a lot of kids in your family to understand that.
I should have stayed out of here, now I'm hungry. :(
I LOVED taco flavored Doritos. They were awesome. I also remember pizza flavored goldfish crackers. I think they have them now, but they didn't for a loooooonnnggg time.
Just thought of this one.....Marathon Candy bar. It looked like braided chocolate and was actually chocolate covered caramel. When you bit into it you had to stretch it forever. I lost a filling eating one of these.
Cal said:

OMG Cal that brings back a lot of memories. I never drank from these... okay I used to grab a sip everytime my father would ask me to bring one from the fridge :)
Trixter we have Orange Crush up here. We have all the crush brands. Grape Crush, Cream Soda, Orange Crush and Lime Crush are sold in a multicase up here :)
If already said, then I agree, otherwise... Fruit Rollups! :D
pamela* 12-11-01, 04:50 PM I used to like those cheese twists chips.. that were kinda like nachos.. I think they still have those in some places.. if you're lucky.. I've found some in the vending machines at college before. I also liked those drinks Slice and I think Peach Slice used to be my favorite. Orange wasn't so bad. What else? Sorry guys.. Being one of the kids of the 80's.. I should have plenty.. but I can't remember any right now. One that I really hated was those licorice bottles with the flavored liquid in them UGhh.. I hate licorice.. especially those twizzler ones. But whatever happened to ranch fritos? They were called "cool ranch" I loved those!!!
nolanbuc 12-11-01, 06:16 PM Thanks for reviving this thread! :) The junk food I miss most is actually a drink, Rondo soda! It was a citrus sorta thing.
CORNQUISTOS!!! :) :) :)
I haven't eaten any Cornquistos since '88. Whatever happened to them? :( :( :(
So_Bohemian 12-30-01, 07:00 PM I wish Pac Man Cerial was back. I am a big Pac Man fan, and that was my favorite breakfast food. My mom would go to a special store, far away to buy it for me each week, and when they stopped making it I cried. Ooooh... memories.

Everytime we are in the cereal aisle in the grocery store, my husband whines about how he wishes that they would bring "Ice Cream Cone " cereal back... anyone remember it? I vaguely do...
There are several types of hubba Bubba flavors of gum that I would love to have right now! Wacky Fruit, (tasted like peach), Chocolate chip mint, and checkermint...
angeleyes25 12-31-01, 11:26 AM I too miss the Hubba-Bubba gum.I really liked the bluberry one and does anyone remember these tiny chicken sandwiches from KFC called chicken littles? Those were one of my favorite thing's to eat from KFC.The best chicken sandwich I tasted and what about the Big Breakfest from Mcdonald's?It used to come with one of those English muffin thing's instead of a biscuit. When I do get a big breakfest I usually don't eat the biscuit.I don't like it and usually it's hard.
Caligula 12-31-01, 11:29 AM we still get the english muffin here, you can't get the biscuit even in a breakfast sandwich if yo uwant it

I LOVED taco flavored Doritos. They were awesome. I also remember pizza flavored goldfish crackers. I think they have them now, but they didn't for a loooooonnnggg time.
I haven't eaten any taco-flavored Doritos since the '80s.
That 80z Girl 1-27-02, 06:05 AM Jen-
I had been really missing the Marathon bar myself. I found a website that sells retro candy. I believe its called Groovycandies.com. (or something close)
In England, Cadburry makes a candy bar similar to the marathon bar called "Curly Wurly." It's kind of pricey to get some off the website (which I actually did). I later found out that a British pastry shop here in my area sells these as well. I'm not sure what part of the country you're from, but if you do have some type of a British market, bakery or something of the sort, see if they have the "Curly Wurly" bar.
OK, now for the 80's junk food I REALLY want back. What ever happened to "Munchos"? They were these totally awesome chips! They were made by the same company that makes "Funyons" Of course the Funyons are still around, but the Munchos are nowhere to be found! I remember they were in orange bags. If any of you know where I could get some munchos, please let me know!!
Caligula 1-27-02, 06:11 AM I don't know if they did this in the USA, but here in the late 70's early 80's they brought out potato chips in grape, orange and lemon flavour. didn't stick around too long:) . We also had Koogle peanut butter, that was peanut butter mixed with chocolate, marshmellow or strawberry jam in (that was 70's for sure)
PacManDave 1-27-02, 11:53 PM A few thoughts :)
First off, I'll agree with a few other... I miss JELLO PUDDING POPS!!! Man those were great!
You can still get Munchos where I live (Indiana). I've only seen them in the small bags, like in vending machines and stuff, but they're out there :)
As are Chicken Littles at KFC. I don't think they list them on the menus, at least not here, but I've asked about them, and you can get them at the KFC's here.... at least the last time I went you could!
And Tinajo... tell you husband that I remember the Ice Cream Cone cereal... it was GREAT! It's all I ate while it was out! Man, I would love a box of that right now.......

Next time I'm at KFC I'll have to ask about those chicken littles.I hope they have them here where I live!
Love how the trend is going so far. Here's a few 80's junk foods that I remember:
"Crunch Twists"- These were made by Keebler (sp?). The nacho cheese flavored are the ones that I remembered the most.
"Tater Skins"-Also made by Keebler. They came in sour cream & chives, cheddar cheese & bacon, & baked potato flavors.
"Lay's Jalapeno & Cheddar Potato Chips"-They were spicy, but not over-powdered with the cheese seasoning that most chips have nowdays.
"Andy Capp's Hot Fries"- They are still made Goodman Foods out of Raleigh, NC, but they don't taste as good as they once did IMHO. Also, they offered Cheddar Fries, Bacon & Cheddar Fries and Barbeque Fries as well.
As far as candy goes:
"Rainblow Bubble Gum"-Each gumball was a different color and flavor (ex. red was cherry, yellow was fruit punch, etc.)
"Dip-N-Stick"-This was essentually a banana-flowered candy stick that you dip into powered candy like cherry, grape & lime.
"Fruit Stripe Gum" & "Fruit Stripe Bubble Gum". The name says it all.
"Bubble-Yum-Bubble gum"-I remembered when it was introduced. Raspberry was my favorite.
"Mamba"-Fruit-flavored taffy.
"Skittles"-Also I remembered when it was introduced for the first time.
"Gobstoppers"-Made by Willy-Wonka Candys. Essentually a jaw breaker that changes color the smaller it gets.
"Nerds"- Also made by Willy-Wonka Candys. Each box would contain 2 seperate flavors of small candy chunks like watermellon & strawberry, cherry & grape, and raspberry & blueberry (my favorite:) ). This was a huge sucess for Willy-Wonka which spawned a breakfast cereal with the same concept in the 80's.
I'm pretty sure I can come up with some more. Give me some time. (Oh, RC Cola-Remember that?)

OMG, I loved that gum-in-the-toothpaste thingy too, that's so cool! I thought everyone had forgotten it! My favorite flavor was the green kind that had Slimer from Ghostbusters on it.
tripenvalgirl 2-09-02, 01:13 AM I want Tater skins and Chocodiles brought back to life!!

Johnny Z 3-08-02, 11:11 PM So there I was in Michael's today, standing in the checkout line, and what did I happen to see in the candy aisle...?
POP ROCKS!!!
I hadn't seen those since I was in high school, so the 80s freak in me just reached out and grabbed one. So please excuse me while I go off and rot my teeth again. :biglick:
