View Full Version : Bubble yum and hubba bubba
Polethebear 7-25-01, 06:33 AM I was never much of a gum fan(occiansionaly) but i could never get over the amount of different varities both gums had.I'll also never forget their commericals on saturday mornings and their adversisments in my old comic books.
80sTrivia 7-25-01, 11:49 AM I was a big fan of Hubba Bubba and Bubbleliscious. There was this other gum that I enjoyed, Squirt!, with the liquid center. My favorite flavor was pink lemonade, which I haven't seen in years. I also was a big fan of Tiger Stripes, and their multi-colored packs...
I always enjoyed gum, but the one named Squirt made me ill, litterally. The first time i put it in my mouth and felt that goo in the middle on my toungue i threw up instantly. I was just a kid so i got away with it. My favorite was the Tiger Stripes one. Does any one remember the gum that was shaped as a hamburger? I loved that one as a kid...
80sTrivia 7-25-01, 05:07 PM I remember the hamburger shaped gum, too! I loved it as a kid, but it would gross me out today. The same thing with the Squirt gum... it would make me gag today, but it was kewl as a kid! Wasn't their a commercial for Squirt gum with an explorer running from some cannibals in the jungle? It seems I remember the guy chewing a piece of the gum, which caused a blue goo tidal wave, and the natives screaming "Ichy Bung Waw!" or something like that. Or was there a gum caled Tidal Wave?
djdaffy1227 7-25-01, 06:31 PM The one shaped like a Hamburger was a promotional thing for Wendy's. It came with Where's the beef stickers that I still have!
Iluvthe80s 7-25-01, 10:05 PM I always liked the Dr. Pepper flavored gum. There was some other flavored ones that were soda flavored, but I can't remember which flavors.
Sal Collaziano 7-26-01, 01:26 AM MDC and I definitely have gum favorites in common. Another favorite of mine was Big League Chew!
Roemello 7-26-01, 01:39 AM Can't remember a gum I didn't like actually <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> All the above mentioned were/are great <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
Big League Chew....I loved that stuff too. The store my mother works at actually still sells that stuff <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
ImSoooSure 7-26-01, 05:37 AM Strawberry Hubba Bubba was my fav. That's some great stuff. The gum with the liquid center has always made me gag too. I also gagged on fruit roll ups/ Yuck, I can't stand those things to this day!

I never understood the appeal of fruit roll ups.Now big leauge chew was fun! I used to chew that even though i couldn't blow a bubble.
I also tried the others but i liked their packages more than i did the gum.Like i said corny.
tiger stripe brought back a lot of memories.
Roemello 7-26-01, 06:23 AM Just remembered another one....that gum that came in like a toothpaste dispenser. Don't remember too much about it, but I think I liked it at the time...lol <img src="tongue.gif" border="0"> I know it didn't last too long...
On Topic - Loved both brands. Bubble Yum and Hubba Bubba.
Off Topic - I loved Big League Chew. That stuff was great. Right about now though, I have a fixation for Tear Jerkers.
My favorites as a kid... (I don't really chew gum anymore, except occasionally Sugarless Bubble Yum, which is almost impossible to tell apart from regular!)
Wild Cherry 7-up gum... kind of like an off-brand version of Squirt, with a filled center... used to get it at McCrory's... yum!
Chocolate-mint Bubblicious (I know, I'm a sicko)
Watermelon Bubblicious
Original Hubba Bubba... remember the print ads in the comic books, with the Wild West theme?
Fruit Stripe, though the flavor lasts about 30 seconds and it burns all the enamel off your teeth! LOL
nolanbuc 7-27-01, 08:16 AM Yeah, Mary, I remember those! I also loved the western theme commercials for Hubba Bubba that ran on Saturday mornings.
When we played baseball, Big League Chew was a dugout essential. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
Polethebear 7-27-01, 08:23 AM Double for me! They were some of the things i was thinking about when i started the thread.
soundofherwings 7-27-01, 08:52 AM hubba bubba was the shit! I would chew it so much I'd get a jaw ache. In fact a couple of years ago when I went to an eighties party, my first port of call was to pick up some hubba bubba so that I could chew on it all night! lol.
I remember the wild west adds with the cowboy blowing a bubble and then taking the gum outta his mouth and blowing on it (like you would blow on a smoking gun!). Man, we all used to run around like little maniacs doing that too! <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
I loved Dr. Pepper Gum..which is kinda ironic since I can't *stand* the drink! go figure.
I also loved those gums that came in the toothpaste like tube. I'm such a sucker for wierd little promotion thingies like that <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
80sTrivia 7-27-01, 10:37 AM No one has mentioned Bazooka Joe, yet. I liked them when I was younger, but the gum is way too hard to chew! You could crack a tooth! I also used to enjoy reading those half-baked comic panels and the ridiculously silly fortunes. I never liked Bubble King; the gum always tasted bitter when you first put it in your mouth. <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
Dancingdoll1986 7-27-01, 01:30 PM In Hey there MDC!!! <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
I LOVED Bazooka Joe!! They sold it at the Uncle Sam's in big bags. We'd buy a bag, and then spend the rest of the day unwrapping each one just to get to the comics. (I think that's how one of my teeth came out...and it wasn't even loose!! <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> )
In Jr. High and HS...if you didn't have gum to chew between classes, (and to share), you were looked on as odd. I remember being terribly upset in 8th grade, b/c I forgot to get gum at the drugstore that night. I was scared of being ridiculed by everyone for not having my Bubble Yum!! (Grape, of course!)
Ah, to be that young again. Like those were the biggest issues we had to deal with!!
~G
80sTrivia 7-27-01, 05:02 PM Hey, Gretchen!
I'm sure I lost (or chipped) a tooth or two while chewing Bazooka Joe, too! I remember when Grape flavored Hubba Bubba came out for the first time, in the late 70s. Someone brought a pack to my second grade class, and we were all chewing this gum, and our teacher turned around from writing on the board and said: "Who's making grape jelly in here?" <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
ILuv80s... Dr. Pepper gum RULED!! and MDC, the 7up gum was awesome, too!!! Man.. I wish I had some of that right now!!
Mary C !! You are the coolest woman I know! Chocolate Mint Bubblicious was the best gum ever made! Follwed by Wacky Fruit Bubblicious.. it tasted like peach!
"Got anymore gum?" I can't tell you how many times I heard that phrase in school!!!
Too funny!!
Polethebear 7-30-01, 06:58 AM Your bringing back some memories for me and i didn't chew gum.....that much.
80sSmurf 7-30-01, 12:27 PM Hubba Bubba was the choice of gum for me...and sometimes still is <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
Does anyone remember a brand of gum that came in little silverbags and cracked/popped in your mouth before you could actually chew it ? I think it was limeflavoured, or something like that...can't recall the name.
djdaffy1227 7-30-01, 01:46 PM Speaking of gum. I brought my card collection over to my girlfriends house because her son wanted to see my Star Wars cards. Mixed in with the cards were a couple of "Chu-bops". I believe they came out in 1980 or 1981. They were little actual album covers with lyrics for a song on the back and the gum inside was shaped like an album. The two I found were "full moon" by the Charlie Daniels band with "The legend of Wooley Swamp" lyrics on the back and Billy Joel's "52nd street" with lyrics to "my life" on the back. I aso remember having Blondie and Blue Oyster Cult ones at one time. Talk about memories!
Polethebear 7-30-01, 08:26 PM I remember those,werid but cool.
xistenza 8-03-01, 03:01 PM i wasn't allowed to chew gum growing up, but of course i would sneak some chewing time in when my father wasn't around. (usually ended up getting caught and grounded so sneaking around didn't last long).
ANYWAY, my friend and I were talking last night about gum and we couldn't think of the name of the gum that had a Giraffe (i think) on the package. It was really really fruity and it was in striped wrappers. The flavor didn't last at all, and the sticks were usually hard as a rock.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm going nuts trying to think of the name.
Help!! <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
Hehe, thanks Tina! You and I must have been the only reasons Bubblicious Chocolate Mint stayed on the shelves! <img src="cool.gif" border="0">

Fruit Stripe! (http://www.sweetnostalgia.com/fruitstripegum.html) It had a zebra on the front. It came in regular (cherry, lemon, lime, ??) and "bubble gum" flavors. You can still get it today. The flavor is still just as instantaneously gone, however... heh.
xistenza 8-03-01, 05:25 PM *LMAO* THAT'S IT!!
A thousand "thank you"s to you Mary!! I was pulling my hair out trying to think of that name. God, that gum sucked. *lol*
I can't wait to show my friend that link.
Dancingdoll1986 8-03-01, 08:51 PM I just bought a pack of the Fruit Stripes Monday!!!
Also, I still have a pretty full, and decent, collection of Chu-Bops. (No gum in there...eeeww!!!) I loved those. Very cool.
You just don't see anything like that anymore. Bummer.
~G
I remember Hubba Bubba! Never had it much though! I love watermelon though! I wonder how many flavours you guys had that we didn't get over here??? Hmmmmmm
