View Full Version : Divinyls
Hey Y'all,
I know the Divinyls had albums in the 80's, but did they score any chart success or have any memorable songs from the 80's? I only know of them from the 90's and their hit, "I Touch Myself". Great song and video! :thumb:
Cartoon_Chris 1-27-02, 09:34 PM They were critically acclaimed but not too successful commercially - their biggest '80s single was Pleasure and Pain at #76 in 1986 (from the album What A Life which peaked at #91). One record later, still before they got that hit, their label dropped them.
Thanks for the info on the Divinyls Chris! :thumb: Somehow I thought the band may have been more successful and that I just wasn't aware of their 80's hits, turns out there weren't any. Thanks again.

The Divinyls, lead by Chrissie Amphlett with guitarist Mark McEntee were an Australian guitar bassed band formed in Sydney in 1981. They had quite a few hits here in Australia, including :
Boys In Town (1981 Chart position (in Australia) 10)
Science Fiction (1983 " " " 12)
Siren (1983 " " " 35)
Good Die Young (1984 " " " 25)
Pleasure And Pain (1985 " " " 37)
Back To The Wall (1988 " " " 32)
Hey Little Boy (1988 " " " 37)
There is a best of album called Essential Divinyls avaiable on Chrysalis (though my CD also has refrences to EMI on it. Is Chrysalis part of EMI?) and the catalogue no (at least here in Australia) is 321846-2.
The "kinky" lyrics were there well and truely before "I Touch Myself"... I am reminded of the line in "Only Lonely" which goes :
'...And he said 'Come on baby, not on the first date' And I said 'Ok baby, how long must I wait'...' I don't think she meant comming up for coffee, somehow! The song also features some cool use of Oh Oh Oh Ohh's in it too! This compilation is worth finding if you want some soft rock with an Australian feel.
Good Luck! (It's worth it, I reckon even if I am a new romantic at heart!).
I think I Touch Myself is a '91 hit.
SurlyOne 2-14-02, 10:08 AM The album What A Life from 1985 is my favorite, and the song "Pleasure And Pain" is in my 80s Top 20 (although I've never actually made an "official" list! But you know what I mean...)
The song "Ring Me Up" is featured in the movie Sixteen Candles, but only in the original version. When it was released on home video, they lost the rights to some of the songs and replaced them with generic instrumental pieces. Other songs deleted from the orginal movie include the instrumental song "Kajagoogoo" (by, uh, Kajagoogoo) that played over the opening credits, plus "Young Guns (Go For It!) by Wham!
If you catch the movie on cable, you can still hear the original music.
whistledog 11-13-04, 11:42 PM 'Boys in Town' was a surprise Top 40 hit in Canada in 1983
RetroMan 12-01-04, 06:29 AM My favorite track is Back To The Wall which was featured on the soundtrack of Nightmare On Elm Street Pt IV or V. It's clever how they use it too - it starts when that cute girl is driving to her friend's house in her convertable Golf and when she turns the key to turn off the engine, it turns off too as if she is listening to it (on a cassette of course :thumb: )
PunkyPower 12-01-04, 06:40 AM I remember one of my friends having me listen to "I Touch Myself" one morning on the bus to school. I know it was before 1991 because I was in high school in '91 and way too cool to be riding the bus. :D Must have been in '88 or '89. We all thought that was the raciest song ever - omg, I can't believe they said that!

No, it wasn't the bus YOU rode to school. I didn't know you back then, remember???
Now quit gettin' off topic!
patchyfogg 12-17-04, 03:26 PM The Divinyls were a band given the label "The Next Big Thing" in 2 different decades, yet they really became more known as being a novelty act.
