OK, you can take this song two ways, and after reading through it, I can almost read some statutory rape charges being filed. But I can also just see a man in love with a younger woman who needs a strong male presence in her life. What do y'all think?

I used to think that it was a literal way of looking at it....and I thought that it was about a dad who was molesting his daughter, though I couldn't understand why anyone would want to write a song about that.

With your view, on the "older figure" in a young woman's life, I can see that as a more logical way of hearing the song. That view never even occured to me. (I guess I just have an icky mind!)

I have to admit, I've wondered about this song, but I think that it is probably the other meaning you mentioned Val about an older man with a younger woman. Or maybe the guy just wants the woman to put her full trust in him?

While a literal translation is hard to escape, I've always seen this song as having nothing to do with age. I see a man who is deeply in love with an insecure woman, perhaps shy, perhaps reluctant to take the leap with him. His words are meant to reassure her, to let her know he understands and is willing to be her guide through it all. The term father figure is not so much literal as figurative....he will be the one (or wants to be the one) to ease her fears and walk at her pace through the relationship, if only he can convince her to take the walk.

I don't think father figure is about age or age difference. I think the song is about finding that special person in your life. The one and only. The soulmate of your life. The father figure/preacher teacher is that one person that will make you feel safe, warm and loved. The person that will show you the way and help you make decisions. He will take the insecure little girl and make her feel like she is the most important person in the world.

At least that's how I see it.

Those are all great interpretations!! The only thing that throws me on some of them is the fact that he says "but sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime". What crime?

I don't think it's about an older man younger woman thing.

I think his character is wanting to give her a proper male figure and be a proper male figure for her. If you watch the video, it seems the girl's a troubled person and he want's to make things better for her as well as himself, he hints to a troubled past as well. Well, that's how I read the song.
