What meaning did you take away from this song?

Time After Time

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick,
And think of you
Caught up in circles confusion
Is nothing new
Flashback warm nights
Almost left behind
Suitcases of memories,
Time after

Sometimes you picture me
I'm walking too far ahead
You're calling to me, I can't hear
What you've said
Then you say go slow
I fall behind
The second hand unwinds

If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time

If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time

After my picture fades and darkness has
Turned to gray
Watching through windows you're wondering
If I'm OK
Secrets stolen from deep inside
The drum beats out of time

If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time

You said go slow
I fall behind
The second hand unwinds

If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time

If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time

Time after time
Time after time
Time after time

Some people get a different take on this song. So what's yours? And there are no stupid insights!! Maybe you can show us something we haven't seen! :)

To tell you the truth, It doesn't seem that obvious really, but if I was to try to come up with a meaning I'd say it had something to do with a lover that is a long distance away. Perhaps a relationship that is over, but yet a desire that it wasn't. But then she seems to be saying that she's still there if he ever needs her.

Haven't studied it too hard though.

I think it's about someone who has left and is moving on with their life without the other person. Maybe even a parent and child. Life moves fast when they are young and you don't pay enough attention. ("Sometimes you picture me. I'm walking to far ahead. You're calling to me I can't hear what you've said.")
Then as the child grows up it reverses. ("Then you say go slow, I fall behind.") The parent wants the child to know they will be there for them for anything time after time. As stated in the chorus. ;)

I for one have never considered this song to be about parent and child as mentioned earlier. Having looked at the lyrics I can see why somebody might think like that though.

I have always thought it was about a relationship which broke up, one of them did not want the break and completely loves the other and is hoping that one day they will realise their mistake and return. Now having had a good look at the lyrics, I still think the same.

She's thinking of somebody whilst still in bed and is caught up in confusion, it's more likely to she's confused about love/ romance than about parents or children IMHO.

Later on she goes on to sing about "Secrets stolen from deep inside", There are some secrets you'd only reveal to your partner and not a parent/ child. The fact that this partner has now left gives the sense that they have been stolen.

The verse that starts "Sometimes you picture me" is talking about a recurring dream. She imagines that the man still wants her, but her worst fear is that he can't reach her and that she can't see or hear him, she doesn't want to miss any signals that he might give off that he wants her back.

"Watching through windows you're wondering if I'm OK" again she is imagining that he is thinking of her in the future, contemplating whether he's made the wrong decision.

The chorus states that she will always be there for him despite anything that he may have done, he will always be able to rely upon he, he's all that she wants and she'd do anything for him.

I say she and he because Cyndi Lauper sang it and it makes it easier to write, but it could equally be applicable any combination of people.

LOL @ Topcat!!

I actually always thought this was a love song. The singer is still in love with the person, but feels the need to move on because sometimes love just isn't enough.

I like Imsooosure's idea about the song. I had never thought of it in a parent/child context, but it could actually fit. :)
