Anyone into musicals? I could never see why anyone would like to watch them. LOL Plays are great and all but, just without a lot of singing. :D Nothing like a show on Broadway though! :)

LOL Plays are great and all but, just without a lot of singing. :D Nothing like a show on Broadway though! :) jen* 1-12-02, 12:11 AM I was just discussing this with my classes today. Next week we will begin a unit on plays. Musical plays are my favorite, but I like all genre. Most of my students had only seen (or been in) Christmas plays at their churches. It's sad that the youth of today don't know about this style of art. I pulled up the Picasso piece Guernica on the internet today in class. Some of my students laughed at it, even after I explained the circumstances behind the painting. Oh, btw, we will be studying a scene from "The Diary of Anne Frank" and also a one act play called "A Better Mousetrap". I'll let ya'll know how it goes. I ultimately want my classes to perform these pieces before another class at least. ImSoooSure 1-12-02, 02:41 AM Yep, I like the musicals. I think I posted a few of them I'm into somewhere last night. I love My Fair Lady, The Sound Of Music, Mary Poppins, Gigi... Grease is my all time favorite!:D I sure wish they would release that on DVD! Trixter 1-12-02, 02:57 AM Originally posted by ImSoooSure I love My Fair Lady, The Sound Of Music, I like musicals, and I'm not ashamed to admit it! They are an enjoyable form of entertainment, just like films. ImSoooSure, "My Fair Lady" is my favorite musical of all-time. I played Professor Henry Higgins in a high school production back in 1985. "Evita" is another brilliant Broadway musical, which I've had the pleasure to see, and a great musical film! :thumb: Some of my other favorites include: The Sound Of Music Victor/Victoria Cats Sweeny Todd Beauty and the Beast Bogie 1-14-02, 09:05 AM Loved Les Miserables ...red, the blood of angry men. black, the dark of ages past... :D Rent was okay. Love Oliver. Anyone remember Bugsy Malone with Scott Baio and Jodie Foster? I have the video and watch it regularly. :D TopCat 1-14-02, 06:24 PM I am not too crazy about musicals. :) outofplacechild 1-15-02, 12:11 PM dance numbers in particular. My fave musicals and a few "popsicals" (movies with a soundtrack that's integral to the movie): -"An American In Paris" -"Mary Poppins" -"Saturday Night Fever" -"Fame" -"Flashdance" -"Victor/Victoria" -"Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense" -"Krush Groove" -"Earth Girls Are Easy" -The first 3 Muppet movies -"Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird" -"Dirty Dancing" -"South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" -"Oliver & Company" -"The Little Mermaid" -"Dick Tracy" -"Beverly Hills Cop" -"The Doors" -"Pennies From Heaven" There you go...from G-rated to R-rated, spanning 5 decades...my fave musicals! Sincerely, John Kilduff... And remember..."The world is a stage...the stage is a world of enter-taaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiin-ment!" Dancingdoll1986 1-15-02, 12:59 PM Being a dancer, I LOVE musicals!! In 1995, I was in the touring company of "Cats" for 3 months, until I got a phone call that my grandfather was dying. Then I came home to spend quality time with him. Silveradocruiser 1-15-02, 02:13 PM Originally posted by ImSoooSure Grease is my all time favorite!:D I sure wish they would release that on DVD! I totally agree!!:) I just love that one!:p The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady are great classics, among my favorites, too! this charming man 1-20-02, 06:11 PM Last year I went to see Mamma Mia. It is a story which uses the songs of Abba during it. It is fantastic and very clever how they have turned monolog songs into dialog. Brings totally new meanings to the already brilliant music of Abba. Benny & Bjorn both play a big part in it's production. xistenza 1-20-02, 09:43 PM Originally posted by Bogie Anyone remember Bugsy Malone with Scott Baio and Jodie Foster? I have the video and watch it regularly. :D Oh my god!! Yes!! I've been trying to think of the name of that for SOO SOO long. Thanks Bogie! I saw this about 10 years ago and I loved it. Very clever. :D Shortie Blonde 1-20-02, 09:54 PM You guys are forgetting one of the best--Rocky Horror!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jen* 1-20-02, 10:21 PM Originally posted by Bogie Anyone remember Bugsy Malone with Scott Baio and Jodie Foster? LOL TopCat 1-21-02, 07:57 AM Seems I do like some musicals. :p I love Grease! Watched it yesterday with my nephew. ;) I enjoy RHPS, It's a classic! LOL Whenever I think of musicals, the ones like Silverado mentioned come to mind. I have never seen them and I doubt I would want to. :) No offense to Silverado or any one else. ;) I did like Moulin Rouge! :D So I guess what I am saying is, I don't like musicals but I do! Mary 1-21-02, 12:08 PM I just saw Moulin Rouge for the first time yesterday, what a kicker! Of course, I love Ewan MacGregor :smooch: I was in lot of musicals in high school, usually on the lighting crew or in the orchestra. My Fair Lady... The Mikado... Grease.... Oliver... The Mystery of Edwin Drood... (which I was *shocked* to learn won a Tony the year it came out, ack!!) Chess... too many. The bad thing about being in a show, or working on it, is that the music still gives me bad flashbacks 10+ years later. The only ones I still like, out of those, are Grease and Chess. Strangely enough, ABBA annoys the hell out of me, even though I love Benny & Bjorn's flop of a "rock opera." LOL. My favorite show is Into the Woods. Maybe I'll go put the CD on. :) BrandyBlue 1-21-02, 12:42 PM For the most part I really don't like them but there are a few exceptions-- "Tommy" "Rocky Horror Picture Show" "The Wall" "Little Shop of Horrors" Shortie Blonde 1-21-02, 04:36 PM I enjoy RHPS, It's a classic! LOL I almost got my dad to watch that with me last night on VH1, but he doesn't like crossdressers. He just doesn't understand the funniness of it. I love Grease! Watched it yesterday with my nephew. I am not allowed to watch that anymore for some reason. :( "Tommy" "The Wall" The wall is awesome, but now I fear again I have been scared for life. Tommy, I can almost stand, but songs about pinball just don't make it with me. BlueMolly2001 1-21-02, 05:09 PM Originally posted by jen* "My name is Talula." Jodie Foster singing is hilarious, but I watched this purely for the enjoyment of seeing Scott Baio. LOL Bugsy Malone is one of my favorite musicals of all time. Somewhere in my photo collection is a picture of me dressed up as Talula. My sister decided it was a good idea to get me dressed up, and my mom took the picture. Whenever I find it I'll get it scanned and show all of you. :) I'm a huge musical fan. Here's a list of some I really love: Xanadu Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (okay, this is one of the worst movies, but it has a special place in my heart) Bugsy Malone Jesus Christ Superstar Rocky Horror Picture Show Shock Treatment (the "sequel" of Rocky Horror) Godspell Grease and Grease 2 (mainly because of Maxwell Caulfield, and the song, "Reproduction") Little Shop of Horrors Evita Phantom of the Opera Les Miserables Annie The Who's Tommy My Fair Lady Sweet Charity Chicago I could go on and on. I like Andrew Lloyd Weber musicals. I know some people bash his work, but the music is fantastic. I also want to see Mama Mia, because I love the music of ABBA, and it looks really interesting. BlueMolly2001 1-21-02, 05:21 PM Originally posted by BrandyBlue For the most part I really don't like them but there are a few exceptions-- "Tommy" "Rocky Horror Picture Show" "The Wall" "Little Shop of Horrors" I know I said "The Who's Tommy", but that was the Broadway show. I absolutely adore "Tommy", especially the Cousin Kevin scene. I'm a fan of Paul Nicholas, and that scene just drives me mad. Maybe that's why I have a soft spot for "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: The Movie". I can only watch "The Wall" when I'm in a strange mood. It's not a bad movie, but it creeps me out, especially during the "Mother" scene where Pink, as a kid, goes into his parents' bedroom and find his mom sleeping with his father's corpse. That totally grosses me out everytime I see it.:yucky: this charming man 1-21-02, 05:22 PM I didn't realise you meant films as well, Grease was probably the best musical I've seen at the cinema, I remember there was such a buzz for it when it was first released. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is really funny, I'd like to see it live on stage, people dress up as the characters when they go to see it here, people who would never or who have never cross dressed, do so for the first time just to go and see it. The Timewarp was very popular over here although Damian's version was very poor. The song I like best from the film is Sweet Transvestite. I even have the soundtrack as a picture disc. xistenza 1-21-02, 05:32 PM Originally posted by Mary C I just saw Moulin Rouge for the first time yesterday, what a kicker! Now that's something I'd like to see. :) this charming man 1-21-02, 05:44 PM Originally posted by xistenza I agree. I love this film! Brilliant, just brilliant. I heard the Pet Shop Boys were going to do a Musical. Now that's something I'd like to see. :) It just so happens I was reading something in the Newspapers today about musicals and it mentions the Pet Shop Boys musical which is called Closer To Heaven. However it says that it is a bit of a flop, but don't be disheartened, as the paper isn't a very good one anyway. It also says that Boy George is about to open his musical Taboo, which I think is about his life. Sarg 1-21-02, 09:00 PM I enjoy watching musicals once in a while and one that I wanted to see performed live was Cats, but I never did see it and now its going to close after a very long run. Two years ago I did buy the Cats video and I still throw it into the VCR and enjoy watching that one. It's a fabulous show. Some other favorites are "Grease" "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "Mary Poppins" and "Xanadu" Shortie Blonde 1-21-02, 09:59 PM That seen in the Wall when the children are down by the train tunnel creeps me out. jen* 1-21-02, 11:17 PM "Jesus Christ Superstar" Stage "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" Stage and Film "Oliver" Stage and Film "Grease" Stage and Film "Grease 2" Film "Sweeny Todd" Film of a stage production "My Fair Lady" Film "Damn Yankees" Stage "Cabaret" Stage "Chicago" Stage (in Chicago) "Mary Poppins" Film "Guys and Dolls" Stage "Moulin Rouge" Film "Rocky Horror" Film "Tommy" Film "Little Shop of Horrors" Film "Camelot" Film (I had the opportunity to see the stage version with Richard Harris and didn't take it. *still kicking myself 15 years later* I know there are more and I'll add them as I think of them. jen's list of shows she is dying to see "Cats" "Rent" "Phantom of the Opera" (though I know every word to every song" "Evita" "The Sound of Music" "Godspell" "Les Miserables" (I've seen some of the stage version on PBS, but fell asleep before it was over) "Mama Mia" Mary 1-22-02, 12:05 PM Originally posted by this charming man I even have the soundtrack as a picture disc. I bet that's gorgeous. What's on the album art-wise? My best friend from high school probably has it, too. It was her project to make me memorize the entire Audience Participation album, ("I f'in hate celery!") but I have still never seen a "fully staged" showing of the movie. Still a "virgin!" We grew up in the sticks, so we never had the opportunity unless we staged it ourselves. And while that was a blast, and terrified her parents more than once, it just isn't the same. Heh. My favorite RHPS song is "Rose Tint My World/Floor Show." I know, RHPS is supposed to be a comedy, but FrankNFurter's solo in "Don't Dream It" makes me cry almost every time I see it. Call me an old sap. It's nice to meet you, this charming man. I'm also a Smiths/Morrissey fan, since I was 12 or 13. this charming man 1-22-02, 04:15 PM Originally posted by Sarg Some other favorites are "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" Sarg, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is the SCARIEST film ever. The child catcher is the scariest character I have ever seen and has caused me many sleepless nights. It should have been given a XXX certificate. Gosh 'man', I thought I was the ONLY one who thought this! :) It's nice to know someone else had sleepless nights over that character! He would haunt me in my dreams with his horse and cart. Evil, pure Evil!! outofplacechild 1-22-02, 06:37 PM I agree on "Rocky Horror", and I should also add: -"The Blues Brothers". This movie and "Fame" ensured that the musical would survive the 80s. -"The Wall"-Freaky stuff! Especially the final scene...it's even freakier after you've seen the entire movie, and then you see the MGM logos at the end. I watched the whole thing once then went through it again fast-forwarding to my favourite bits. :D txgirl 1-24-02, 11:50 AM I just watched XANADU the other night. And yes, I sang every song in the movie. It was great.:) I also remember Evita. My mom went to one of the first showings in California. She said she cried her eyes out. majorfan11 1-31-02, 01:46 PM Does anyone remember "The Music Man"? Westend Girl 1-31-02, 03:24 PM Originally posted by xistenza I agree. I love this film! I think the only reason it flopped was because it was made by a pop band. The music is wonderful and I can recommend the cd. The show should come out on video in 2002. |
