If I remember rightly, Madonna's Like A Prayer Video was first played as a Pepsi advert (commercial). I thnk it was about April 1989, in the UK there was a lot of hype before and we were even getting adverts on the telly telling us when it was first going to be on. I think that it was first aired at the same time all around the world. Did you see this and what were you doing?
I remember being at home at the time and was curious to see what it would be like, so I waited for it to come on. When it finished I thought it was good but didn't think much more of it.
The next day it was in all the newspapers and on the news that it was offensive to peoples religion and disrespectful to Christ. I couldn't believe that it had caused so much uproar, I wondered if I'd seen a different version.
I think Pepsi bottled out and dumped her after that, but I think it was probably one of her best songs.

I remember there being a great deal of hype before Madonna's Pepsi commercial debuted. There were even commercials promoting the upcoming commercial. The commercial was premiered in eighty different countries simultaneously. I remember vividly waiting for the debut of the commercial, which was to be shown during The Cosby Show here in the States. The video for "Like a Prayer" was released at the same time, and the backlash was immediate. I thought the backlash was ridiculous and unwarranted. Madonna's detractors didn't even get the true message of the video, which was about racism and bigotry. The burning crosses were a metaphor for prejudice. At any rate, the video and song for "Like a Prayer" now stand in the vanguard of Popular Culture as a testament to Madonna's talent and diversity.

I distinctly remember ALL of the hype and eagerly awaiting the commercial. It was so cute. I loved the forelock.
The uproar though was for the video that premiered within that week.
I didn't find the video at all offensive. She's never offended but instead has always been able to present truth. I didn't see the race issue in the video. To me it represented spirituality and the idea that no matter who we are we can affect change if we're just willing to speak up.

I was in my living room in front of my big screen tv waiting patiently for the commercial during the "Cosby Show". The commercial was astounding!
Unfortunately, I happened to live in the town, Corpus Christi, where Bishop Rene Gracida called for all Catholics to boycott Pepsi, starting the whole controversy!! I can't believe it, a Madonna fan, in the worst place possible!
