View Full Version : Were the 80's really better than the 90's?
Tavish13 6-07-00, 08:05 PM Lo all.
This might be a bit odd but I'm looking for a bit of background here. I was born in 1983, so I can't really remember much of the 80's at all. My experience of the 90's wasn't bad, and when I ask my parents (although what do they know http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif ) they say that the 80's was a boring decade - well compared to the 'Swinging Sixties', that is.
So what made the 80's special for everyone on the 80's exchange?
I can understand the music - personally I would have loved to have been old enough to appreciate good music in the late 80's, with bands like Guns n' Roses still around. But what else made them so special?
Comments, views anyone?

Tavish13
Good Question Tavish13! I wouldn't say the 80's were better than the 90's, or even the 60's or 70's. What sets them apart, IMO, is how you experienced them. For me the 80's were the most exciting years of my life...met a great girl, got married, started a career, traveled quite a bit, it was cool. All the things that made the 80's (the music, fashion, movies, tv shows, video games, etc.) remind me of the great times in my life and vice-versa. Personally my favorite music is from the 60's and 70's and the cars (U.S. that is) from the 80's totally sucked! But they were great times, indeed. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/cool.gif
Blaziegirl 6-07-00, 10:06 PM I agree with BigToan it's how you experienced them. For me the 80's were filled with good and bad times but I try not to think about the bad. I matured a lot at that time also http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

Roemello 6-08-00, 04:34 AM Well, the 80's were pretty much my childhood years, so they were nothing but fun! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Being an individualist and creative mind, I just loved the whole atmosphere of the 80's. Everything was just so off the wall and things were a bit more peaceful than the 90's. Granted, I had my share of fun times in the 90's too, but overall they just can't compare to the 80's. It seems that everyone likes the even numbered decades better than the odd. 60's supposedly was great, I wasn't around for too much of the 70's, but I heard it sucked, the 80's I just mentioned, and the 90's was so-so. We'll see how the rest of the Millenia goes.

Like Roemello my childhood was mainly in the 80s. I loved them, everything! The '89 came round and I was in High School and it all went downhill and I got depressed and I hated school and had the worst time of my life. I would never repeat those ninetys again, well, the first 6 years anyway til I finished school finally. The memories of the 80s were what kept me sane I suppose. Long live the 80s!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think the 80's were better than the 90's. But I also agree with BigToan that it is how you experienced it. The 80's seemed to be a loud, carefree, somewhat over the top decade. Whereas the 90's seemed to be a darker, more serious, career/money driven time.
------------------
The 80's were better than the 90's due to one word....FUN. Everyone was a little less uptight in the 80's. People actually dressed up to go out, and the whole "angst" thing (which I am sick to DEATH of!) was not around at all. Weekends meant one thing, party time. Get dressed, go to a club, meet your buds and party. IMHO, alternative music, and the message it gave, started the downfall of fun, and rap music put the last nail in the coffin by telling today's kids that woman are just "bitches" and "ho's", and you have to act like a punk to be cool. Damn...I miss the 80's.... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif

Right on Pagan!
------------------
Well, I gotta say I *really* had the angst thing down to an art in the '80s. I was one of those brooding punks who also listened to old Depeche Mode and Bauhaus and hated the world. I wore all black and moped about. I was a royal PITA to deal with by my parents because I thought the whole world sucked and we all were going straight in the crapper. Alternative music was *really* alternative music and not the mainstream tripe they foist on us in the name of alternative. Crass, Christian Death, Stiff Little Fingers, Klaus Nomi, etc... were all angst-ridden.
Then again, the '80s were definitely a large-bore return to power pop and bubble gum. The angst was there. You just had to look for it. It wasn't fashionable. I think that may be the big problem right now. The pissed-off teenager is the norm now, not the exception. I was an exception in those days.
FWIW.

dirtydeeds 6-09-00, 05:13 PM To answer Tavish13's question from my perspective, the 80's were the greatest decade ever! I graduated high school in '85 so all my high school and college years were in the 80's and they were great times for me! I'm sure it's all a matter of perspective, though. In the 80's I still had no responsibilities and really not any worries so of course it had to be better than now! I'm not saying that maturing and becoming responsible is a bad thing, but it sure is a lot of fun when someone else has to worry about it!

Sal Collaziano 6-13-00, 10:41 AM Pagan. What Pagan said makes all perfect sense to me. The 80s were about having fun - not being a gangster. The music was about having fun (rock) or about love (freestyle dance). In the 90's music was about depression and violence. Drugs.. And since it seems life revolves around music, I think 90s life was depressing.
Now, I have an interesting twist here. My 80s life was horrible! I hated to be alive in the 80s! The 90s, on the other hand, were great (life wise). I had my first serious relationship start on December 3, 1989 and it continued for 7 years.. So in my case, the best years of my life were the 90s. But the 80s was the better decade to live...
Confusing?

Sal Collaziano 6-14-00, 09:24 AM Right. Even though I had a better 'life' in the 90s, I had more fun in the 80s. I think if I had my relationship during the 80s it would have been all that much more fun. I just think the 80s were a more relaxed time to live. Everywhere you went, people were just being themselves and doing their thing. Now, everyone is out to be the best or something.. It's just a different feeling. Definatly not as friendly as it used to be, out there..

I dunno sal, the 90s have had more peace than the eighties and living standards have increased aswell. Plus there was the whole cold war thing. I think that the 90s seem a lot safer.
The only thing bad about them is that the bands in the 90s are absolute crap, i mean im tired of all these dance tunes. Plus, when there are alright bands the show they put on is poorer.
having said all this i was only born in 84, so i suppose i cant judge that much.

Amy Livin 6-15-00, 09:24 PM I have to disagree with you Hamish, I don't find the 90's peacefull at all. These days a girl can't walk down a street without being scared of being raped and such. I mean if you ask me, the 90's were scary.

Roemello 6-16-00, 02:57 AM The 80's were definitely a much safer time. No one ever worried about being shot at in school, Instead of bitching about life, people were enjoying it, hell, I grew up in the ghetto and even it was fairly safe. No guns, no knifes...if people had differences they fought it out. If you take away all the technological advances, the 90's just don't even compare to the 80's.

No one ever worried about being shot at in school
Ummmm... sorry, I don't agree with that.
My Junior year of High School (1985-86) we had a guy walk into our lunchroom, walk up to Mr. Webster, our Assistant Principal, pull out a large revolver and say "(fornicate) you Webster. I hope you die." He then proceeded to pop a round off at him, turn around and try and shoot our other VP, missing and hitting our star placekicker instead, shattering his leg.
A couple of years later (89-90?) an estranged husband walked into the same school, went to his wife's classroom, shot her in front of the students and then killed himself.
This was in an upper-middle-class, lower-upper-class area of suburban Northwest Houston. It was worse in the inner city areas.
Crime was up in the '80s. I hung out in areas of Houston, downtown, that many feared. Crime's down in the '90s. The problem is what I've stated before. In an era of instant news and sensationalism, we've all become innured to all but the most extreme of news. Every station is trying to scoop the other, so they cover incidents ad nauseum. We hear the stuff that's extreme, but not the other stuff of everyday life.
Betcha probably didn't know that the little turd, Kip Kinkle, in Alabama, was stopped from going on a further spree by a faculty member who went out to his vehicle and got a gun, holding the little bastard at gunpoint until the authorities came. It wasn't reported much by the news media, as it's not as sensational as the kid with the gun killing people.
------------------
Roemello 6-16-00, 06:08 PM I stand corrected...but It was a lot worse in the 90's and it'll probably keep getting worse unfortunately.

Do you *really* believe everything you hear on TV, blazie? New York has a higher crime rate, and they don't have a death row.
The '80s were more violent. Crime stats show it. I still prefer the '80s, but crime *was* higher.
------------------
Amy Livin 6-17-00, 01:58 PM OK, maybe the crime was higher, but what were the crimes? Were they as bad as all the killings and rapes? I don't know much but I think that crime was more like stealing and stuff like that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Roemello 6-17-00, 06:02 PM That's very true...besides that, stats are but a tool, not an absolute truth. They don't always cover everything. There may have been higher crime in certain areas in the 80's than the 90's, but for most people, the 80's were a much safer time.

Mr. Miata, I don't know where you live...but I have to disagree with the comment about crime in NY. I live in NY, and yes...crime as a whole is down from the 80's, but alot of it has to do with the "hands off" policy that has been subjected upon NYC police. If you've been reading the papers you'll know about the horrific attacks in the city during the Puerto Rican day parade. 50 men formed a wof pack and attacked women around Central Park, 49 of them so far accounted for. They ripped off their clothing, soaked them with water, inserted fingers and other objects into them. When did that ever happen in the 80's? What about Columbine HS? That ever happen in the 80's? World Trade Center bombing? Oklamhoma City bombing? Petty crime may be down significantly, but as a whole, people are MUCH more violent these days. Then again, people were violent in the Old West, in the 1800's, in the 60's, 70's AND 80's. Human nature. Deep down as a species, with of course some exceptions, we're savages.
Peace (hopefully!)

Do we ever stop to think that perhaps things seemed so much better in the '80s because we were younger, less jaded and more oblivious to what was going on around us? We did *not* grow up in an era of instant media and instant sensationalism like we have now. CNN was just an idea and it was scoffed at. The Gulf War made us news junkies.
FWIW, the lowest yearly murder rate for the '80s was 7.9 per 100k in 1985. The lowest rate that I could find for the '90s was in 1998. That rate was 6.3. Highest rates were in 1980, which was 10.2, as opposed to 1991. which was 9.8.
Multiple victim crime rose during the '90s, but the total homicide rate dropped by the end of the decade. I attribute a lot of this rise in multiple victim crime (like the hackneyed "remember Columbine" statement) to the fact that we are so drawn to sensationalism that the perpetrators of crime are trying to make themselves famous and get their pictures on the cover of Time magazine. Our media are all over incidents like stink on stuff. Remember, the McDonald's shootings happened in the '80s.
The Luby's massacre occurred in 1991, which many consider to be the tail end of the "'80s era."
Richard Wade Farley, Silicon Valley: 7 dead, 1988
Ronald Gene Simmons, Arkansas: 16 dead, 1987
6 killed in Dallas at a nightclub in 1984.
8 dead in Kentucky in 1989 at a printing plant.
7 dead in Montana, 1987 by an uncle
7 dead in Tacoma, WA. 1987 by a family member
6 in a mall in 1987
7 children, 6 adults by a prison guard in Pennsylvania in 1982.
The list goes on.
According to the DOJ, the number of 2 victim crimes has increased, but *not* the number of more-than-2-victim crimes.
<IMG SRC="http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/ncsucr2.gif" border=0>
Total violent crime spiked high in 1990, but by 1995, the total violent crime rate was lower than it had been in decades.
<IMG SRC="http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/prop.gif" border=0>
Property crime rates have dropped or remained the same every year since 1974, with the rates in the '90s being lower than in the '80s.
<IMG SRC="http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/vsx.gif" border=0>
There's some interesting reading here: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/homtrnd.htm
I stand by my assertion that crime was worse in the '80s than it is now. Our country has seen a boom in the economy and a reduction in crime that is good.
People are *not* much more violent these days. Rape is down, burglary is down, robbery is down, murder is down, multiple murder is down. It just *seems* like it's worse because we are all older and more cognizant of our surroundings.
I still think the '80s were a great time, and I much preferred them to the '90s, but I don't pretend to wear rose-colored glasses in regards to the way things were. I still wish things were like they were in the '80s in regards to good music, good clothes, good fun.
And New York's crime rate is *still* high, even though they don't have a death penalty, so you can't say that having a lot of folks on death row means the crime rate is high. The two aren't even remotely related. That's what my New York comment was about. It was an analogy in comparison to the Texas crime rate. FWIW, I don't live in Texas anymore and I don't plan on going back in this lifetime. Though I'm a proud Texan, I have no desire to live there.
When did the Central Park jogger rape happen? Seems to me it wasn't in the '90s. That was a group of thugs on a wilding, not unlike this incident last week.
Again, crime was higher in the '80s. Doesn't change the fact that I prefer the '80s. I just felt a need to refute the "'90s more violent" statement. That's a media-fed fallacy.
------------------
Blaziegirl 6-19-00, 07:39 AM This subject stinks! I have enough problems of my own without worrying about the crime rate... Oh hell, I wasn't getting rowdy or political at all. I was merely trying to clear up some misconceptions. Many try and say that their era was so much better than the current. We sound like a bunch of curmudgeons talking about them whippersnappers and how they've ruined the world. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Our world was rougher than the world of the '90s. I just wanted to clarify where I was coming from with my statements. The best way to do that is with facts, not with hyperbole.
I'm about as easy-going and "chilled out" as they get. I just refuse to bury my head in the sand. Again, like I said, I *still* prefer the '80s or I wouldn't be here. Hey,
How about a female perspective....this is what i liked about the eighties....fashion..if you wanted to wear two belts then who the hell cares... you did it and then it was cool...cool was whatever you liked...everyone was all about hanging out.. and going out...and songs about the same...i was younger in the eighties and being young is just about the best thing...not chronicalogically(sp) though...we are talking ...at heart....no bills...not work....no thinking about ira's and mutual funds.....just beer friends and music....the eighties just happend to be when i was young at heart...well carefree anyway.. Back to earth...I also liked the hair....girls spent hours on their hair....HOW HIGH CAN I GET MY HAIR?...loved it it was competition....Aids was still a new entity and had not scared everyone into hiding yet either.....more love more rock....more youth....bring it on baby.. Hey you can make this your eighties...you have youth on your side so let no one stop u K? It is all about u.

Canopy Haz Spoken
My take on the 80's is bitter/ sweet, with a huge accent on the sweet.
I lost some family members and friends in the mid-decade. But, one of the ways I got through all that was the music. It was my outlet.
I got into music from the 60's and 70's as well. I went to every concert that came to town. I would travel to Houston or Dallas to see the annual Texxas Jam. I lived the lifestyle for nearly that whole decade.
I had the most fun during that time. I cherish the memories which is why I love this site. There is a lot of talk about the music, which brings the memories back (good and bad alike).
Towards the end of the decade, I finally started growing up. I met the girl of my dreams and have not let her go since. Starting in December of 1990, we had the first of 3 beautiful, wonderful children. Being a father is the second best thing that has ever happened to me, the first being my wedding.
So, were the 80's better than the 90's? No, not for me, they were just extremely different, polar opposites.
I know this is all sentimental and emotional. But, I lived that on the edge, over the top lifestyle that the 80's has come to be defined as. I didn't care where i slept, where my next meal came from, nothin like that. I can't imagine doing that now, but at the time I was just living by the seat of my pants.
I was a reckless kid in the 80's, I grew up and became more responsible in the 90's, and now I'm starting to get old (ohh, my aching back).
As for the crime rate, every year something happens that "shocks the world". Like mr miata, I grew up in the Houston area as well. We are also about the same age. I never felt any more or less safe than I do now. Anything can happen to anybody at anytime. That doesn't mean one time frame is more violent than another.
Personally, I like to get into the music more than anything because it sparks a memory which invokes an emotion. This in turn helps me get through my 12 hour workdays with my sanity intact.
The 80's for me was about the music and the lifestyle that went with it.
------------------
Tavish13, the year you were born, 1983, was an awesome year for rock-n-roll. It was probably my favorite year musically. That is the year most bands talked about here put out their definitive albums. This set the stage for future bands. This was the year people found out that Ozzy and Dio could rock on without Black Sabbath. Def Leppard exploded with Pyromania. Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Ratt, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mettallica, AC/DC and scores of others that deserve to be mentioned hit it big that year either in the studio or on tour or, in most cases, both. It was an excting time to love rock-n-roll music, regardless of its specific label. For me, 1983 set the tone for the rest of the decade and the stuff I mentioned in my previous post.
I just thought you would want to know what an absolutely amazing year , I believe, you were born in.

Mayhem, what part of Houston did you hang out in? Judging by the concerts you frequented, probably not the same parts as I did http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif but I was just wondering. I grew up in the Clay Rd./Hwy. 6 area, near Bear Creek Park. I spent most of my yoot at clubs such as Visions, BeeJay's, Pearls, Rock-it, NRG and Numbers2. Hung out in Willowbrook and Sharpstown mall, with occasional trips to Town and Country Mall, when Abercrombie and Fitch wasn't just cheesy clothes.
Saw many a concert at Astroworld. The Cure, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Molly Hatchet, The Fixx, Missing Persons, Go Go's, Air Supply, Romantics...
I miss the Eighties. Well, except for parachute pants and the Pat Benatar look. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
------------------
Well, I lived abour halfway between Houston and Galveston. I all but lived on Galveston and Surfside Beach. I only saw a couple of concerts in Houston before I moved to just north of Austin when I was 16.
For me thats when all hell broke loose. I lost pretty much all my inhibitions, it was a great time. If you have ever heard of Sixth Street in Austin, everything is true. It is a wild place. What a party!!
Miata, I didn't go to any clubs in Houston, only in Austin.

canopybed~ 6-22-00, 01:13 AM i just think that the eighties were a time of great acceptance......it was cool to be an individual....you wanted to be the one that could do the most different things....if you wanted to wear three belts at one time you did....who the hell cares...it was a competition to see who had the biggest hair......plus that was the time when i was young ...nothing...and i repeat...nothing...beats being young. No bills, mutual funds, ira's , no responsibility. The eighties were about hangin out and acting young. it was OK not to be focused and have a ten year plan....You still thought that we were all going to live on mars on the year 2000 it seemed so far away...well i think that the new milennium could be just like the eighties....it is all what you make of it.....our generation just made the most of being young and likes to remember and talk about it....i suggest you do the same for yourself and your generation, rocked the eighties, lived in the ninties, makin it happen all over againin the new millinium rock on........ http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

Roemello 6-22-00, 01:59 AM Individualism...that's one of the main things that keeps my love for the 80's alive. To this day, I'm still an individualist. I don't conform to what society deems as "in style," I do it my way http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif I don't think there'll ever be another decade even close to being like the 80's...too much conformity and too little individuality http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif

I spent more time surfing at Jamaica Beach, though I did make it to Surfside a couple of times. Also enjoyed fishing off the Flagship.
My grandmother still lives in Hitchcock.
One of the greatest clubs of the '80s for the punk/new wave movement was The Island, in Galveston. I never made it, but it's *legendary.*
------------------
Well said Canopy and Roemello. It was because of this acceptance that I was able to do the things that I did. I am who I am and it was not questioned. It was great.
Mr Miata, I was hard rock/ heavy metal. No, I don't think we would have frequented the same clubs, venues, or concerts even if I had stayed in Houston. Honestly, I hated the punk/ new wave movement. No offense to you or anyone else who was into that scene, it just wasn't my scene.

Tydestra 6-22-00, 02:21 PM Like I said before, I'll say it again. The 80s were better cause I was Mommy's Little Princess and I was able to get away with murder! But then... ack... the 90s, puberty and http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/frown.gif I got grounded when I did something bad; not to mention my pouting lost any kind of power it had... and that sucked! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

mrmiata, I spent the better part of my late teens on Jamaica Beach (85-89). The best spring break I ever had was there, 88 I think. I tried to surf, it looked a lot easier than it is (to me anyway).
I'm from, and still live in SE Houston. Pasadena actually, you know the home of Gilley's where that 80's flick "Urban Cowboy" was filmed. We had a great teen club here called Fast Times. If it wasn't for that club there would have been a lot of great music I would have mist out on. This was the pre car days. After I got a car cruising Westheimer was the thing to do, and driving by #'s2 was always cool. The people that stood outside were what I think of when I think PUNK in the 80's (some really cool hair). I never went in until 90 or so when the crowd was totally different (everyone was in all black.)
When the cops shut Westheimer down is when I started going to clubs. What year did you leave, did you ever go to 6400? I went there a lot because it was 18 and up and played great dance music like Camouflage, Front 242, Micro Chip League, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Rockmaster Scott, The Cult, etc......
You hung out at Sharpstown mall, do you remember Good time Charlies? When I was real young my mom would take me and my brother there.
Well got to go.
------------------
I was one of those people with the hair outside #s2. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/eek.gif I saw The Jesus and Mary Chain, Shriekback, ummmm... some others, there. We hung out there *a lot.* Got my tattoo at Shaw's Tattoo just up the street.
My uncle lives in Pasadena. You can see the refineries from his backyard. In fact, when the Phillips plant exploded a few years back he felt and heard it and could see it from his back window.
IIRC, I went to Fast Times once or twice, but I could be wrong. There were a *lot* of clubs in the '80s. One of the clubs outside Sugarland was Pearls. I was there a lot. For some reason Fast Times seems familiar. Also used to go the Apocalypse Monster Club, which was in a warehouse in Pasadena. Saw 7 Seconds, SNFU, CoC and a lot of other bands there.
I never went to 6400. Is that the one on Richmond or Fondren (don't remember which)? If it is, then it opened up shortly before I left in '88. I haven't looked back and I've only been back twice in the past 12 years.
I saw NIN and MInistry in Atlanta at Masquerade. Saw the Cult with Metallica in Nashville.
I did all my surfing at Jamaica Beach. Not too crowded and about the best waves that side of Surfside. Of course, waves in Texas is an oxymoron. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
------------------
TJ or Mr. Miata, did either of you ever hear of a band that was local to your area in the 80's called RIPPER? I met those guys (and gal) at a horror convention when they came to NY in 1986, and became friends with them through mail and phone, and I eventually flew down to Houston for a week to hang out with them. Did you guys ever hear of 'em?
Peace,
Pagan
------------------
mrmiata, 6400 is the club on Richmond. 6400 was the address, real original don't you think. Before the name changed to 6400 it was FIZZ, then HIPPO.
Your right about the waves in Texas.
Pagan, I don't think I can recall a band named RIPPER. Did they have any songs I might know. Back in the 80's our ROCK station had a great Heavy Metal/HardRock show on Friday nights, they sometimes played local stuff.
------------------
The 6400 is the one I'm remembering. Yep, it was on Richmond. The Cult played there shortly before I left, IIRC.
I think I have a Ripper flyer somewhere in my stack of old stuff. There was also a band called Ms. Carriage and the Casual Tease as well as Rotting Corpse. Friends of mine had a band called Direct Tension that was pretty popular.
I'll have to look and see if I do have a Ripper flyer.
Pagan, was that horror convention the Chiller convention? My best friend goes to Chiller almost every year.

Actually Mr. M, it was the Fangoria convention....and it was capped off by me meeting and taking pictures with my dream girl....my lust woman....my ultimate babe...the one, the only, ELVIRA!!!! Woo Hoo!!! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
On the serious side, if you have that flyer I'd love to see it. I really miss those guys. I was best of friends with the guitarist until he became a born again Christian and tried to convince me to give up my life of "heavy metal sin". I swear...organized religion is the worst....

80s4ever 7-07-00, 05:12 PM Tavish,
I graduated in 1986, so I had the great privilege of experiencing the 80s to the fullest.
We were young, wild and free. It was all about glitz and glamour. We had a broad spectrum of music to choose from. Glam rock, pop rock, funk, new wave, alternative and progressive (yes, there was a difference in those days). No one would criticize you if you liked Michael Jackson, Billy Idol, The Cure and Poison at the same time. They most likely did also.
We had big hair, wild make-up, excessive jewelry and funky clothes. We went to dance parties before "clubing" was cool. You were friendly to people you didn't know. If you had a quarrel with someone, you took it out on the dance floor. Being "angst" was a lifestyle... not an excuse. Having a completely black wardrobe was a security, a love... not a rebellion.
MTV was born and changed us forever. We didn't necessarily tune in to listen to the music. We loved to see the artists! What are they wearing? How were they dancing? What kind of hairstyle do they have? Music videos actually followed the words to the song. The only break from videos were interviews with musicians. Who cared what ordinary people were doing, how they lived together, or where they took their spring break!
Movies were a huge influence on us. We had Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, St. Elmo's Fire, Flashdance and Footloose. You may have hated the Brat Pack, but didn't you wish you could be part of that group for just one day?
The 80s were a time when girls were girls, and they dressed that way. Guys wore cologne and looked rad! Looking good was the norm and sloppiness was left for the dweebs.
Do I think the 80's were better than the 90's? Personally speaking... everything about the 80's was fresh and new. I have found the 90's lacking in individuality and a cheap spin-off of the 70's. You can call it "Retro" now, but we called it "crap" back then.
I have had great success in the 90's, but I would love to take a trip back in time for just one day. 'Nuf said?

I haven't looked at this post for a while, but when I did I was amazed. 5 pages long!
Thanks for all your responses guys, although the topics discussed have kind of wandered from the original issue slightly.
Anyway, both the 80's and 90's are over now, so I say bring on the new Millenium! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif
