My all time favorite short story is "The black Cat" by, Edgar A. Poe. Although I like most short stories, exspecially if there's horror involved. :)

I always enjoyed the short stories of Shirley Jackson (natch, Wonder Twin), especially The Lottery and Charles. One of my favorite short stories is A Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl, who also wrote Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I have a great book of short stories by Saki, leather-bound, given to me by my grandfather, that I treasure.

'A Rose for Emily' by William Faulkner was one of my favorites, partially because it was such a shocking topic.

'Sorry, Right Number' by Stephen King in Nightmares and Dreamscapes

'The Most Dangerous Game' by Richard Connell

'The Lottery' also...

'The Rocking Horse Winner' by DH Lawrence

I'm sure I'll think of others later...

The Black Cat was awesome!!! I read that in 7th grade for a teacher. For Your Eyes Only is my personal favorite (that's not mine anyway).

Ted (and everyone else I suppose), I have a book ... well I've had it for awhile now.. that you would love... if you don't already have it. It's called American Gothic Tales by Joyce Carol Oates. She has quite a few anthologies. It has short stories by authors of the horror and suspense genre. Click here (http://www.usfca.edu/~southerr/gothic.html). It's a great book to have in your collection. One of the few books I didn't recently give away. I must admit, she appears to have many interesting books... including Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque (http://www.usfca.edu/~southerr/haunted.html)

I also had that book Nightmares and Dreamscapes by Stephen King, greenfreak.. and I also liked Sorry, Right Number. I wonder what I ever did with that book. That was awhile ago. I must have misplaced it with the countless times I've moved.

My favorite short story authors are Margaret Atwood, Ellen Gilchrist, and Rick Moody.

"Death by Landscape" is my favorite by Margaret Atwood... it's in Wilderness Tips. "Light can be both wave and particle" is my favorite by Gilchrist. I love how Gilchrist interconnects her characters and stories. It drives some people crazy, but I've always enjoyed piecing together the lives of Rhoda, Traceleen, Olivia, and especially Nora Jane.

I just started reading Rick Moody-- I got Demonology for my birthday last year because it had a roll of Smarties on the cover. (American Smarties) Gorgeous writing, yanks your insides out and stomps on them. Yes, that's a good thing! LOL.

I like Edgar Allen Poe a lot too.
Also I love the short stories by O. Henry. I love the way he uses twists and irony at the end of most every story.
