View Full Version : Expressions/Slang in the 80's
8teesBuff 1-23-01, 06:20 PM ok... ilooked back in this topic and there was one about language, but no really specific catch phrases. Different areas produced different phrases, so here are some of mine from grade school or jr hi.
"F-A-C-E!! face to you" and then putting your spread out hand in front of your face and then toward the "face-e" or if you were REALLY brave... actually putting ur hand on THEIR face and maybe giving a little shove!! A SURE way to start a fight!! (translation - in your face)
"Cooties!! PSSSHHHHHHHHH!!" and 'spraying" the air or an object that an undesirable person touched with invisible disinfectant.
PSCHE!! (also spelled sike!!) as in "I psyched you out, messed with ur mind.
AstroGirl 1-23-01, 11:52 PM Cootie Spray! That stuff saved my life quite a few times. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Purple Velvet Bohemian 2-07-01, 04:07 PM I remember mint, but now I think it has been replaced with cherry. Umm, I used to say awesome! and of course totally. The valley speak was huge after Moon Unit's song came out but I started saying it when I saw Fast Times and I thought Spicolli was too cool. If I think of more I'll post them later.

lalagirl 2-24-01, 12:36 AM I remember the FACE thing, with the hand violently waving in front of your face. I loved and overused "Psyche!"
We had an embarassment term called "moded". Used in the context of "you are SOOOO moded!" I have no idea what it means!
Other Cali phrases include:
Bitchin'!
RAD - always said with a sort of cough at the beginning (huh-RAD!)
We didn't have "Mint", but we had "FRESH" and "ICY FRESH"
Also, NECTAR - used to describe anything from your girlfriend to your ride.
What about "GRODY"? That one was all over!
Sunlover 3-10-01, 07:25 PM "Chill out!"
"Sometimes you just gotta say, what the f*ck." From 'Risky Business'

lazy boy 4-07-01, 12:25 AM Oh yeah, how could I forget, douchebag - as in jock douchebag. Generic term for any high-school athlete. Not too sure about the spelling, it's not like it's in a dictionary or anything http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif
Ah, creative little buggers, weren't we?
And yet more http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif
"It's been real" - that was in place of goodbye. It then grew into "It's been real, it's been fun; it just hasn't been real fun."
Bogus made a pretty good comeback in the '80s too.
And the immortal "dick". Everybody you didn't much care for was a dick. I must have heard that word a thousand times a day. No, wait, maybe I'm giving you guys the wrong impression http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif
outofplacechild 4-07-01, 07:12 PM Fave phrase:
"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads"-Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) in "Back To The Future"
Something about that quote has always struck me as inspiring. I never hear it, though I often quote it myself.
In the 2001 Rye Neck High School yearbook, I made sure to include that phrase in the quote box below my picture. To paint a picture of who I am, what my views are, and my hopes for the future, I quoted a varied amount of sources. The ones I can remember are:
-"The Breakfast Club"
-"Scarface"
-"Mallrats"
-"48 HRS"
-Go West
-Duran Duran
-Carly Simon
-Public Enemy
-"The Muppet Movie"
-James Brown
-Julie Brown (the white one from MTV and "Earth Girls Are Easy")
-"Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"
-'Monty Python's Flying Circus'
-"Terminator 2: Judgement Day"
-Steve Martin
-Porky Pig
-WWF stars Edge & Christian
When I get my copy of the yearbook, I'll type up a transcript of my quotes.
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

Ha ha! This is a great topic! The only phrase that has stuck with me all this years and still use is "I'm so sure" or "I'm sure" when I don't believe what someone is telling me.
relivingmyheyday 4-13-01, 01:35 PM OMG! Don't forget dork, or dorky. I still use that one. Along with 'Like, riiiggghht.' and Psyche! and lots of other goodies. Teens these days have nothing on us! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

outofplacechild 4-13-01, 01:53 PM I know, and I'm 18 years old. I feel like an outcast when I call attractive women "babes" and everyone else refers to them as "hotties" http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//yucky.gifhttp://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00hmph.gif
Was the slang term "nuke" (referring to mircowaving) popular in the 80s? Sentence example: "I'm gonna nuke a Hot Pocket. You want one, dude?"
That's another one. I still use the word "dude". If someone's getting out-of-control, I say "dude, calm down!".

I always HATED the word HOTTIE. Whenever I hear adults say that, I want to vomit! It sounds so IGNORANT. Then again, we always called a very attractive female a HAMMER. I have no idea why, but that's the way it was.

How about Generic?? "Like her clothes are so generic"
I so overused that term!!
outofplacechild. I suspect you would have been right at home in the 80's. "Nuke" and "Dude" are still two of my favorite words. Glad you can relate to us, man. It's cool to have you here.

Do Y'all remember the expressions/ slang or little phrases you would ues with your friends in the 80's? What were some of your favorites, or the slang/phrases you got tired of?
Myself, I used the word "Awesome" repeatedly. I don't use it anymore, except when posting in the 80sxchange! :thumb:
Expressions like "Don't worry, be happy" grated my nerves then and still to this day!
Here're a few '80s slang terms I still remember...
awesome: good(?)
bad: good
bud: not cool
cool: good
rad/radical: good(?)
Don't Worry, Be Happy--an '88 one-hit wonder?--was performed by Bobby McFerrin.
Iluvthe80s 1-03-02, 05:52 PM I know my friends and I used "Rad" a lot! The other one was "killer".
Roemello 1-03-02, 09:29 PM We've covered this one a couple of times in past topics....check it out :)

and

I thought we'd covered this before....but as I probably mentioned in those threads, it's No Biggie. ;) (btw, means Not a big deal.)
bud = bad? I've never heard this before. The bad thing about the word bad is it meant bad and good. 'Dope' was big in the 80s, and it meant good. Why? I dunno. 'Deaf' (or is it 'def'?) meant good, too. I guess you had to be there.
Dude, get off me! = Stop give me a hard time.
Savedge1 1-05-02, 08:51 AM I remember we said "gnarly" quite a bit. How about "totally tubular"?

I remember people using "Totallly Tubular" quite a bit! Even in note passing at school, some would put "TT" at the end of their notes to represent this phrase!
WBS=Write Back Soon
LYLAS=Love Ya Like A Sis
Oh, I remembered another one my friend and I used to use:
GROI = Get Rid Of It
greenfreak 1-06-02, 10:31 AM BFF=Best Friends Forever
We used to say Just Joshin instead of Just Kidding... I think that might have been something my friend made up though. :D
This isn't fair.
I live in a time where all slang is...wierd. At least you can peice together what "Gnarly" and "Totally Tubular" mean.
I'm envious.
Right, here's some slang words that were widespread in England during the 80's:
'Choked' 'Chote' or 'Choter' - Said during or after watching someone's misfortune. Also used when something went wrong or someone was found out.
'State' - Used in response to an outrageous or unbelievable statement.
'Gaylord' - Used as an insult 'You Gaylord' being a typical example.
'Far out' - You are on a lilo, and the current is rather strong, presumably.....
Dancingdoll1986 1-06-02, 04:03 PM Here are some more:
Word - Can be used in any way. (Respond to a question with it, answer with it, "point" to someone when saying it...you get the picture!) We used that one constantly...it was on my HS grad cake from my mom!
Stoked
Psyched
DUDE!
*** your face
Maybe they were just me..I dunno!!!:D
I say "awesome" and "totally" everyday still!
I'd add more.. but I think I posted a bunch of them in the two threads that Roem posted... maybe not.. but I'm pretty sure I have ;)
"Get outta here!": get real?
Thanx tro Anthrax, who invented this phrase looooong before Mike Myers got ahold of it, we used to say "NOT!" all the time.
There was one other phrase thanx to the 'Thrax that we used to say all the time:
BOLN - Bringer Of Late News. When someone would walk in and tell you something that the whole crowd was talking about hours ago.

Oh, I remembered another one my friend and I used to use:
GROI = Get Rid Of It
As you know, Trix, this was a fave expression of Madonna's from the 80s!!!
I never said, "*** your face", Gretchen, but we used to say: "Like, bag your face, man. You are way grody to the max!", meaning, of course, that one was extremely ugly.
Then there was more omnipresent Valspeak:
Don't be such a spaz.
Take a chill pill.
Check out that girl's bodacious ta-ta's (or sometimes we would call them casabas.
I used the word "dweeb" way too often in those days, along with my fave expression, "Smooth move, Ex-Lax"!!!
Who's That Girl? The Ultimate Madonna Trivia Book (http://www.iuniverse.com/bookstore/book_detail.asp?isbn=0%2D595%2D21014%2D7)
Christine 1-17-02, 02:57 PM What about "gag me with a spoon"? I used this one up until about 1998, sometimes it still slips out! :)
Okay, now I feel old. I'm 16, and I remember using all of these words! My favs were (and still are!) nuke (I'm gonna go nuke some popcorn) and like, totally! Maybe it was my mom's fault - she was a 20-something during the 80s, and I think I was raised with all of these. I remember my friends always asking me why I said so many weird things!
Abbie - Child of the 80s?
That 80z Girl 1-27-02, 04:04 AM OK, how embarrassing!! Other than the hardcore "Val Speak", I still pretty much use most of these phrases... Yes, even "Killer". Oh my gosh!! I am so not living in the 21st century!:o
I still use the word "totally" and "much" before every sentence. Alot of my friends now make fun of the way I put things. Or I use the word "so" . Like saying " you are so in trouble". Or I even still use the word "way". Like " I am so way going to do that". I guess there are words I just can't let go.
Kayleigh 2-03-02, 07:24 AM Hi, a word we used to say over here in England was 'Eggy' if someone was angry...
i.e. 'OOh Emily's in an eggy'
I haven't heard it since about 1987 though.....
Valley Dude 2-14-02, 11:02 AM Wonder if the Valley Dude has any phrases :D
Like, fer shure.
Hodad - that was a surfer dude.
Coastie - anybody who lived on the coast, especially if they dressed like a beach bum.
billies - money, but only little kids used that word.
Hi-rider - any car with the back end jacked up for wide tires.
Zoned it out dude - forgot about it. Like, dude, you were supposed to pick me up after school! Sorry dude, I just totally zoned it out.
Crispy - somebody who did too many drugs.
Caz - short for casual. (pronounced like the first third of "casual") If somebody did something they thought you might not like, but you really didn't care, you'd say "it's caz dude".
Bag your face - all the girls I knew used that all the time. It meant that you would be more attractive if you put a bag over your head. But you could bag just about anything - Oh, like bag that car dude, I'm sure! Like, bag those groady [insert any noun here].
I'll probably think of a couple thousand more later :)

I still overuse "so" as you described it, and "wicked," though I came by "wicked" honestly, since I'm from New England. My grandparents said "wicked" when they were kids. hehe.
My friend & I have a running joke that someday, we're going to be in the nursing home together, watching 70-year-old reruns of Facts of Life, & talking just as we always have-- "Like, this bathrobe is so totally grody!" "Fer sure." And our kids & grandkids will think we're freaks. Knock wood and all that. :D
(edit) I forgot one. Was "Sit on it and rotate" unique to my school? I've never met anyone else who knew that one, LOL.
DaVinchi 2-14-02, 02:19 PM My friends used to say saweeet! (sweet) as an exrpession to say cool!
But one that I would like to know the origin of is BFE. As in "where have you been? BFE? I know it stands for Butt F**k Egypt, but I want to know how it was coined?
How about that was one 'righteous' dude!
Also, there was some discussion about the awful term Hottie. Yuck. We did call pretty women babes, and also foxes, as in that girl is a fox.
DaVinchi 2-14-02, 02:24 PM Hey, I also thought about the Bob and Doug McKenzie lingo:
Hoser

(edit) I forgot one. Was "Sit on it and rotate" unique to my school? I've never met anyone else who knew that one, LOL.
I think that comes from Happy Days, when they used to say "Sit on it Potsy".
Also there was the cut downs from Welcome Back Kotter, which while from the 70's still initiated the burn contest when Vinnie Bobarino had a cut down contest with the principal.
In your ear with a can of beer...

LOSTNTHE80S 2-14-02, 04:27 PM I didn't take the time to go back and see what all had been posted.....
One of my fave's was "IT'S CASUAL." I think that was from the movie THE WILD LIFE w/Christopher Penn & Eric Stoltz. I found a copy of that the other day BTW and now it's in my collection. Worth checking out the used videos at the store now and then.
My girls like the term "AWESOME!!"
Shortie Blonde 2-14-02, 06:16 PM I love "stellar", think that's from Bill and Ted. It's my favorite word, and I say it like every 15 minutes on a good day.
Valley Dude 2-14-02, 07:59 PM We had sit and spin or rotate at our school too. There used to be a toy called the Sit 'n' Spin, you sat on it and well, got dizzy :) I always imagined that's where it came from.
Stellar - that's another great one. I think I've got my whole '80s vocabulary back now!
Jazzed - really excited.
Joanie - any female who was out-of-style, like people who dressed like it was still the '70s. From Joannie and Chachi? I dunno.
Shine it on (or somthing like that) - totally ignore something.
Way - I don't know, stupid word we'd use. If somebody said something you agreed with, and you wanted to express your agreement, you'd just reply with a deadpanned "way". Mostly stuff that didn't rate a "like, totally!" and way below an "ohmygod!"

Shortie Blonde 2-15-02, 10:35 PM So that is where I get "way". Stellar is like my favorite word...and it's even cooler when I put to the max on the end. :D
Awesome Dude 2-15-02, 11:36 PM Many '80s phrases never went out of date. They kinda became part of the popular vocabulary. Like the way "cool" and "it was a blast" was popular in the '50s or '60s, but is still in use today. Everyone still says "that was cool!" right?
I still hear teens use many phrases that originated in the '80s. Examples would be:
Dude
Bad
Chill out
What-ev-er
Fresh
As if
OhmyGod!
You know like....
Just watch "Clueless" from 1995. Alicia Silverstone's character and other characters in that movie still used all the above phrases. Her character was from '95, but spoke like an '80s Valley girl. The above phrases have never gone out of date. Not really.
Though I'm not sure, but weren't "dude" and "bad" from the '70s originally? I mean remember "Superman: The Movie"?
"Say Jim!, that's a BAD out-fit!!"
Now '80s phrases that did quickly go out of date are:
Rad
Sike
Excellent
Bogus
Totally Awesome!
Gnarly
Gag me with a spoon!
Tubular
Hoser
Way!
Fer Sure
Wicked
Jazzed

Shortie Blonde 2-15-02, 11:57 PM
You only use the '80s phrases that went out of date? It's probably more concious then you realize!
I say the other ones too, but those a lot.
That 80z Girl 2-18-02, 12:38 PM Quote: I forgot one. Was "Sit on it and rotate" unique to my school? I've never met anyone else who knew that one, LOL.
We used a variation of that one... Sit -n- spin. Simple, but effective.
Nikki_91 2-20-02, 08:19 PM I used to always remember the guys saying "Fresh"..I always think of Ozone from Breakin' when I hear that.
(Those moves are FRESH!)
The80sAngel 2-20-02, 09:56 PM A few I remember from my school days :
ace - great or excellent i.e. "That's an ace jacket, mate!"
spanner - fool or moron, late 80's maybe 88, 89
ballistic - similiar to the 90's phrase "going postal"
anorak - geek or nerd
dink - same thing
hellacious - hellish, awful
batcaver - a goth (I think we got this term from the name of the Bat Cave in London)
generic - something lame or poor quality
ripper - a bit like a preppy (This was more like an insult though. It implied mindless trendiness, i.e. they "ripped" their style from others and couldn't invent their own. This might have been exclusive to our clique, though.)
I use most of these still, and even use alot of American 80's slang (radical!). ;) My co-workers rarely understand half the things I say, they're all 90's children!
Hmmm...some that come to mind from my high school days:
Dude = Pretty much the same meaning as everyone else posted (Still use it to this day)
Bogus = bad
Excellent/Awesome/Killer = Good (Still use it to this day)
Vinyl = Record
Bro = Term you called Your best friends (I still use it to this day)
We pretty much used all the same American slang previously mentioned. We didn't spell out FACE though, just said "in your face" (Hey, I went to High School in the northwest, cut me some slack LOL)
So if your best friend got the newest Iron Maiden Record and really liked it, and his sister got Cher, and he thought it sucked, he might say something like:
"Bro! I got the new Maiden on Vinyl, It's Killer! My sister got that Bogus vinyl by Cher"
If something bad happened to a friend, you might say:
"Dude! That is so bogus Bro!"
Your Biggest Best friend would be referred as:
"Awesome Bro!"
Slayergrrl 2-14-08, 10:28 AM Now '80s phrases that did quickly go out of date are:
Wicked
I always use the word "wicked". I think that may be a Boston thing.
Prefab Sprouter 2-14-08, 10:56 AM In Ireland we describe something that really good as "thats Deadly"!!! Has been in use since the 80's!
djdaffy1227 2-14-08, 11:17 AM OMGoodness, I thought Buff was back. I thought my gosh this really is a reunion.
gotta love the slang of the 80s!
