View Full Version : Preference - Modern City or Little Village?
A friend of mind just came back from a visit to her family in Scotland. She said the town hasn't changed at all!
The fish monger still delivers on Tuesdays, the milkman comes daily, the breadman comes daily. YOu know your postman, your neighbours etc. YOu walk everywhere in the town because its small enough that a car is useless. The little pub down the road has all your old friends and some new.
This sounds wonderful. I'd love to move back to a tiny place but close to a larger centre to get my shopping and movie fixes :)
I think I need the convieniences of civilization too much to go too far away although I love the idea of living in a small rural town.
My ideal would be to live in a small place with plenty of land for my horses, dogs, and other animals to roam, but be within a short drive of a city big enough to have a real grocery store and plenty of other stores.
Caligula 10-08-01, 06:58 PM I'm right in the middle, I live in a city of about 50,000. I have lived i in a villiage of 900 and a city of 2 1/2 to 3 million. The big city is my least favorite. I think a town/city of 10 to 50 thousand allows you most of the comforts of the big city but leaves you only minutes from the country.
Iluvthe80s 10-08-01, 07:01 PM I live in a big city now and pretty much always have. My city has grown a lot in the last 5 years especially. I am starting to want to move somewhere smaller to get away from the traffic and the crowds.
I like small town living. :)
Jazzmyn 10-08-01, 07:09 PM Personally I like cities. Grew up in a small town and hated it. Live in a town of 110,000 now, but it's like a small town to me. At least the atmosphere here is. Seattle is great place to live though. :)
I have it perfect. I live in a countrified setting, but I'm a stone's throw from Route 9, which has every convenience of the city. Every now and then I need to get into Manhattan though....feed off the energy.
Ted Nugent 10-08-01, 07:44 PM I live in a town with 40,000 and I like living down town where everyone is but, just 5 minutes away is all woods. :) But, I LOVE Boston!

YANKEE'S SUCK!!! lol :)
(As a Bostonian I had to do it!)
I have always lived it the big city (suburbs anyway.) I wouldn't have it any other way, small towns are boring. :D
ImSoooSure 10-08-01, 09:03 PM I live at the base of the foothills (Sierra Nevada Mounts.) Everybody lives on acreage out here. I have a 25 min drive to work which is a great drive with no traffic. I can't imagine living in a really big city with a ton of traffic. I think that is the main thing that keeps me away from big cities. I would and do miss the big city culture though. But I am only 25 mins away from a mall and things like that so it works.
wavemaster 10-09-01, 12:11 AM Iīm a Smalltown Boy... ;)
Iīm currently living in a city with a population of 50,000. This hasnīt changed much since I lived here, although it growed fairly in the last 20 years. Those who can afford it move in the smaller villages around, thatīs the reason why the population stays the same.
I just need some 15 minutes to get into the larger city next to us (500,000 ppl), but it also takes only the same time to get into the nature.
For me, a small village would just do fine...maybe in the nearer future.

I guess thatīs some kind of a hint... :D
I like Pagan's scenario. Someday I want to live in a smaller town but close to a major city. Cause ya need to go off every once in a while and smaller towns don't offer as much.
Oh btw..... Ted, the Soaaxx Suck! lol :p
Yankees rule! :D
Roemello 10-09-01, 01:33 AM I live just a bit north of Boston in a somewhat small town/city. Where I am now, is perfect for me...wouldn't have it any other way :D I don't think I could stand actually living in a major city...too damn noisy :p I'll work in it and party in it, but ain't no way I'm living in it :p
morningmyst 10-09-01, 01:36 AM Somewhere in between...I grew up in a small town and totally hated that everyone knew everyone else's business. But, really big cities overwelm me.
I love living in a small town!! I will take a quiet day watching the trains roll through over drive-by shootings anytime!! Sure, people know your business, buncha Nosie Nellies, but so what!?! I don't cheat, I'm not an alcoholic, I don't deal drugs, and if gossiping about me makes the old bats feel better, then at least they're leaving someone else alone. And my child is safe here.
Give me a small town within an hours drive of a large city and I would be happy. That would be perfect for me.

Seriously, Pittsburgh Pa. ia about an hour from Yorkville! :) Thats what i like about my area. Quiet, safe, and many shopping centers! ;)
Acutally, we have TWO major shopping centers only 10 min. away in St. Clairsville, Ohio :)

To some of us Sudbury is a tiny place Zel. :p Kidding.
I've grown up (a little - LOL) in both really big cities and fairly remote countryside. I actually love both equally. Cities like London and Toronto just have so much to offer (like any other big city). You can do anything, anytime.
But I have no problem slowing down to country speed. I've always loved it too.
Surprisingly, the one thing I don't really like is the inbetween thing. Mid-sized cities are probably my least fave. Guess I should get off the pot and leave the suburbs, huh. LOL :D

St. C is actually about 20 minutes from here, but so is Steubenville, which has a mall and a plaza, but not as many stores. But there are a couple different plazas, too. So, Shakey, I guess we're inviting you to live with topcat -LOL!!
