This is a topic that comes up now and then in the media: Are people's manners getting worse? Everyone's had experiences with rude co-workers, waiters, clerks, motorists, etc.
Would you say that manners have deteriorated any in the last 10-20 years, or is it just a matter of perception?

I definately think they have went downhill. People do not seem to have consideration for others or any patience. I see it all around here now where I live. It's sad.

I agree, especially the older generation they are getting to be such crabby people! Even if I get pissed off at people I remain polite to a certain extent UNLESS someone jumps in my face & then I pity the fool *lol*

Manners have gone the way of the vinyl album...there are a few left, but no one can find them. i think parents need to work on this. Most people think their kids will learn this in school, but it starts at home when they start blabbing--"Say please, go on honey, say it, please, please, ok, nevermind, say thank you, thank you, THANK you, Thank YOU, oh, just take the darn thing....he usually always says it!!"

I don't know that this is just something that has occurred within the last 10 to 20 years or not, but I do think think manners are lacking in today's society.

I find it extremely irritating that there are soooo many rude people out there. So what...you're having a bad day, don't take it out on the freakin grocery clerk..*happened when I was working at the store*, it's not their fault. If people would just stop and think before opening their freakin mouths, I think that this world would be a happier place! People are sooo impatient. They go to a fast food place, and if the order isn't put on the counter as they're ordering it...forget about it!!! They blow up....roll their eyes..*I especially HATE seeing an older person roll their eyes...makes me wanna smack the back of their heads*...anyway, I think I'll MIND MY MANNERS and stop!
Love ya all! *smooches*

I find that the manners of the younger generation have worsened heaps! No respect for other people either. They think they own the streets, no consideration for other people walking on the street. They just push past, don't move over for you, don't let older people on the bus first or anything. Little brats!

Another problem is everyone is in too big of a hurry these days. Everyone needs to relax and enjoy life a little better.

I have to agree with you Myst. People should never take their bad days out on the grocery cashier. lol Been through that numerous times. I got yelled at once for telling someone to have a nice day. I didn't know there was anything wrong with that.

That's for sure.
When I was 19 yrs old I worked for KFC. I went to one of our stores to pick up some supplies, and was leaving the store which was getting ready to close up for the day when some guy walks in wanting a 21 piece dinner. The counter people told him that they were closing but that he could get the last 9 pieces at a discount. He wanted them to cook some more up and when they told him they couldn't he got pissed and took off with his girlfriend. A few minutes later he drove his car through the windows of the lobby and they ran off.

Today, its worse. You can get shot for not getting out of their way fast enough or by looking at them the wrong way.

Because I had told him that everyone pisses me off (in the sense that everyone in this city I live in is rude).

Coming out of 20 years in the military, you see somewhat of a difference. In the military, people are still people, but actions have a definite limit.

WOW! I could'nt have said it any better then the posts that are here I own a buisness and I have to deal with lack of maners daily from customers. I don't have to much f a problm with rude customers since they pay me for services. So long as they don't insult anyone personally that works with me. Name calling and deragoraty(sp) comments will get you kicked out of my salon. The one thing I hate is when WORKERS have no manners! I don't care how bad a day you had or are having don't bring it with you to work. I like the saying moms used to say... Treat others how you would like to be treated

UM... what are you trying to tell me Topcat??/ LOL

Anyway, I thought I would add a stroy or two.

My friend worked at a department store as a cashier. She told EVERYONE, no matter how crabby they were to have a nice day. Well, she tells this to one lady and she went OFF on her saying, "How do you expect me to have a nice day when I just left my husband's funeral!?!?"

My friend said, "Well, seeing as how I don't know you, I wouldn't have known that and I tell that to everyone, because it's polite."

The lady said, "That's exactly why you shouldn't say that to EVERYONE, because you don't know them or what kind of day they are having!!"

OK... story #2...
I was walking into the local High School to take pizza to my son's preschool class for his birthday. I had my arms full with 2 boxes of pizza, a jug of juice and a bag with cups, plates and napkins. A high school boy was coming out the door just as I was getting there, I was like 2-3 steps away, and he "politely" steps out of my way, BUT LETS THE DOOR SLAM SHUT!!!!! Now, mind you, it's one of those doors that you have to pull to open. I managed to unpeel a finger to pull it open and when I walked in, a hall monitor was sitting at a desk right by the door and saw the whole thing and I mumbled loud enough for him to hear..."Boy, THAT was rude!!" Hope he told that kid!!

YES... manners and respect are a dying tradition and gimmie, gimmie, gimme is taking it's place!!!! VERY sad!!

I totally agree with Sheibub. I was stopped at a stop sign and was just about to drive away when this kid who couldn't have been more than 10 walked out in front of my car I told him he should be more careful because he could have been hit and the little b*stard told me to go f*ck myself.

Disrespectful little tyrants! It's the way the parents are raising them... In some cases I guess you could blame it on the lawmakers to, ya can't even say the wrong thing to your kid's because it's considered abuse...

That woman who lost her husband was way out of line. It's sad that she just lost her husband but that's no excuse for being so rude.

Respect is definitely a trait that I think our generation is the last to really have any sense of for the most part Some parents just don't have a clue what their doing or they just don't care. I go back to my old neighborhood and a few times seen 8-10 year olds running around the streets at like 11 pm....insane! Especially in such an unfriendly 'hood http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies/vibrator.gif

We get a lot of kids that are about 10 or 11 in our store by themselves at night. Always want to ask them what they're doing out so late by themselves. Why do parents let these kids run around like this???? Really annoys me to see this.

I teach my kids to say thank you and please or they don't get what they want, period. I grew up in a strict house, and I believe I turned out all right, but I can't see treating my kids the way I was treated, so I modify their 'training' a little from what mine was (I bet most will agree here, our parents would be arrested nowadays, for the disipline used back then, would be considered child abuse) But compared to other kids around here mine are the most well behaved and the most polite. Makes one feel good to see others struggling to make their kids mind, and mine mind without trying to make'm. As far as rude people, they are everywhere, I will not go anywhere anymore, restuarants, malls, fairs, anywhere there is a crowd of people, I will not go. People tend to show their ass's when they are in a group environment, all trying to one up the other, acting like they are the important one, you should stay out of their way, I don't know you, stay out of my way. Oh I hate the mall! You ever try to walk down the main isle and everyone just walks towards you and you end up dodging them? I noticed I always do. So I tried a little chicken once and sure enough they were going to run me over if I hadn't side stepped at the last second, and it doesn't matter what side of the isle you walk on either (sometimes they walk down them in different dierections like a freeway.) One time I was at the video store looking at DVD's and I always leave enough distance between me and the shelves for people to walk around me, or grab something I may be standing infront of, you know, just being polite as always. When this young kid (maybe 10) just walks up and stands right infront of me (isle is empty) and continues top stand there. So I walk elsewhere in the store and I start looking again and this time an adult comes up and does the same thing, I , nice guy that I am, just tell my wife 'let's go' and we leave, I will not yell and cuss at a stranger no matter how rude they are, but if they want to get insistant on being an ass (pushing and shoving), I'll take off my coat and throw it down and tell them let's go! But once they see the Glock strapped under my arm in my Galco holster, their manners return. no I never unholster and I never threaten (I love to make them think I'll fist fight them but then they see I carry and they decide to put their ass away, that is what I call ass control)I could go on and on about rude-assed, ill mannered, wastes of human flesh, but I'd be preaching to the choir, huh?

I hate it when there are kids in the supermarkets and they're running around while their parent chat away and one of teh kids says something rude or even comments about someone old or fat or just a little weird and all their mothers do is laugh and tell them not to say things like that. I'd smack their backsides and make them apologize. Not enough smacking anymore nor any discipline!

I know....when my mother talked to others, she didn't let me wander anywhere! Got my share of smacks and spankings too....may be tough, but it is effective

You want to talk about utter disrespect, I know a guy that treats his mother like shit and calls her a bitch among other derogatory remarks....the mother never disciplined the guy his whole life...not the right approach at all....

My husband owns his own grocery store and has the most horrible customers that are kids. He sees so many kids coming in that are left home alone, or don't get disiplined and are just left to roam. They cuss and steal, it's just pathetic. He's also got rude adults that just want him to pay for the rest of their beer or ciggs. Hello? Because of the class of some of his customers, I refuse to work there with him! And I know that's it's only a small percentage, but I swear most of those kids are there when I'm there!! I also have a neighbor who's boys roam outside out late too. Not in our house! Just like when we were all kids, it's dark, you're inside!

working in radio you have to be nice to everybody even the little twerp that calls a million times because you are not playing his request or the funny bunny who calls and asks for 2pac when you work at a country station. Being nice to people can add up to good ratings.
