I'm not sure how "controversial" this thread will turn into, but I was thinking about this after reading another group I'm in. A lot of the members are either vegatarians or vegetarians (people who eat dairy, eggs, but no meat) and vegans (people who don't consume any animal products). I've thought about being a vegetarian for health reasons, but I can't picture myself not eating chicken and fish. I can get away from not eating red meat, since I basically don't eat it that often anymore.
Vegetarian cuisine has changed a lot in the past 20 years or so. It's not just tofu and bark. I help out at a local health food place and and they make delicious vegetarian and vegan meals.

I eat meat with every meal and have a total cholesterol under 100 :bouncy:

I used to work for a company that processed animal fats into consumer & industrial chemicals. You have no idea how many products use animal byproducts. There is no such thing as a vegan.

I have several friends who are vegans, and you can find a lot of foods/products without animal byproducts. People need to be educated about these things, because there are a lot of myths about being a vegetarian and vegan.

I could just as well be but I don't think I could give up every type of meat. I love seafood and couldn't give that up. I don't eat a lot of meat at home, I'd be fine eating mac and cheese for the rest of my life! lol I don't cook a lot of meat. I grew up on a farm and we had meat constantly. I never ate it. I think that's why I don't eat a lot of it now, probably overkill, literally. lol

I was vegetarian for a little while and then decided I was the unhealthiest vege ever!!! I ate tons of pasta. So I added turkey breast and chicken breast back into my diet and I do love it. I try to stay away from red meat though.

I love my meat, and could never give it up. I have backed off my consumption of red meat though, but still enjoy my Pork, Chicken & Fish. I guess you can say, I'm a meat & potatoes kind of girl ;)

I have cut back on red meat. Only because it tastes odd anymore. I usually eat, pork, chicken and seafood.

I can't see myself ever being a vegetarian.

No way.

Humans are built to eat meat. Who am I to argue? :p[/b]

In the words of Jim Gaffigan:

"I'm a vegetarian, but not a strict vegetarian. I do eat pork. And Beef. And chicken."

Nah, I eat meat.

I had heard that vegans say they don't eat anything that had a face.

That would make my girlfriend sad!

I can't see NOT eating meat. If God didn't want me to eat meat, he wouldn't have made it taste so good!

I'm a meat eater, but I have a lot of friends who are vegetarian and vegan. They get tired of people making comments of their lifestyles. People need to read up on vegetarianism/veganism before judging. People DON'T need to eat meat, you can get protein from other sources.
Here is a site to dispel some myths about vegetarians. I'm not trying to tell people not to eat meat, since I'm a meat eater myself, I just thought I'd educate some here about vegetarians and vegans. I know I probably won't change minds, but just read this site.

Myths About Vegetarians (http://www.makingpages.org/health/myths.html)

Oh and btw, my sister-in-law is a vegetarian and she married my brother who is a meateater. They cook differently and they serve my niece and nephew very healthy foods. So vegetarians and meateaters can coexist without any harm

And that - with all due respect, Molly - is the nonsense that vegans want you to think.

Sure, you can EXIST by getting your protein from other sources, but why don't you ask any athlete where they get their protein from?

Ask any bodybuilder or fitness expert.

The best source of protein is from meats. You can get away with not eating red meat, but giving up fish & poultry just won't cut it.

No offense to any vegetarians or vegans, but I've never seen ONE of ya'll that looks fit or healthy. There's no muscle tone on any of 'em.

Aside from the fact that the human body - like I said before - is designed to eat meat.

Look at our teeth. We have predator teeth. Canines. Sharp ones too. Look at our eyes. They face forward. Hunter's eyes. Look at most of your predatory animals. Lions, tigers, dogs, cats, bears, owls, eagles, etc. etc. Their eyes face forward for better vision in hunting.

Look at your prey animals. Deer, antelope, cows, lambs, chickens, etc. etc. Their eyes are on the sides of their heads for better peripheral vision to elude hunters.

Those are the mains reasons. Well....that and the fact that nothing beats a good london broil on the BBQ with an ear of corn and a baked potato.

I can't go without meat. I need at least chicken or fish or something.

Alan, I respect your opinion, but I disagree with it. People can live without meat and you can get protein from different places. I am a meat eater myself, but I also think that we need to respect each other's opinions. I just wanted to point out some myths. The debate between meat eaters and veggies will always go on. I just hope both sides agree to disagree without being disrespectful, which so far isn't happening here.

Okay Molly....now first of all, read my post again. I never said that people can't live without meat. I said that those who lead a lifestyle of more intense physical activity - of which I am one - 99% of the time cannot and do not.

Second, where is anyone being disrespectful? Don't start being thin-skinned and taking things the wrong way. We all know what happened on this board last time that occured, and I don't think anyone here wants that to happen again or will allow it to.

So far in this thread I see no one being disrespectful in the least, so your comment was completely uncalled for.

*DISCLAIMER*

I might be taking what you said the wrong way. Are you saying that so far no one is being respectful, or are you saying that so far no one is being disrespectful? That statement was hard to figure out!

If you didn't mean it the way it sounded, then I am sorry for correcting you.

Alan, that was my fault, I should have been more clear whith what I was saying. I wasn't talking about people here being disrespectful. I've seen with some meat eaters AND vegetarians who are disrespectufl towards each other. Each person has a right to their opinions, even though you may not agree with them, but some people think their opinion is right and will try to tear down the others opinion.
I think so far, people HAVE been very respectful, and I'm sorry if it sounded like I sounded differently.

hi Torchwood Fan,
btw, has anyone checked the amount of protein in fish?
Sushi is so high in protein, and the lowest of meats in fat.

I was raised on a meat (you name it, blah blah) diet, and now I only want seafood, eggs (I can make a great quiche with a Mexican cheese halapeno blend) cheese, milk, and veges, pasta, fruit, etc. diet.
When you think of all the hormones and crap added to meat/animals these days, as well as the depressing way the animals are treated, seafood and eggs, dairy etc. are the only ways I want to go. I figure some animals gave permission to have their eggs, milk, etc. consumed, but not for their bodies to be treated like sh**.
if that offends anyone, oh well :D

OK, was that bitchy? I'm tired, and I can't tell anymore. It was meant to be funny. I think.

I'm a definite carnivore, which is why I'm 6 foot 2 and weigh 105 Kgs (230lbs) while not being fat. ;) I must admit though I am trying to cut down a little and increase my fruit and vege intake.

(Flashdance is on. lol) (Big 80's flashback going on in my head right now. haven't seen this one in years)

I realised you can't really be a vegatarian unless you live in the desert with holes in your shoes, etc.

Shoes, for one thing, if not made of leather fall apart really fast, you've probably noticed. And then if you are caring about the environment, which we all do, you can't live in a house made of wood. Or have electricity...etc...

the meat thing, I just eat what doesn't give me a stomach ache the next day. :D
