View Full Version : Which is better 1980s or 2000s technology?

This page shows how two different music technologies stack up...
I think 80s technology was FAR BETTER!
I am one that likes good sound and i much prefer my VHS tapes to anything digital...
Alot of stuff today is garbage,as small as can be and very hard to use!!!!!
I definitely prefer digital. DVDs over video cassettes any day. I don't own an Ipod, but I'd never want to go back to cassettes again. At least now I don't have to worry about cassette players chewing up the tape and I don't have to rewind or fast-foward for ages to get to the song I want.
Dude111 10-15-07, 09:13 PM Yes but you lose a little bit of sound quality my friend........
Well the sound on the tapes can get pretty bad too after the cassette player has aged a bit. And the tapes too lose their quality after a while.
RetroMan 10-16-07, 06:26 AM I'll always have a soft spot for the humble cassette. My first portable studio was a Tascam 4 track Portastudio that used cassettes to record onto and I had an absolute ball with that machine - it was always about pushing it to the limit and it really tested your creativity

As for technology, the 80's were very innovative - it all seems pretty privative now but at the time there was some state of the art stuff happening - using Chromeoxides on the tape itself to get them close to sounding like CD quality, the revolutionary "auto-reverse" function, and who could forget the high speed dub function? it was groundbreaking for it's time, - even Dolby noise reduction technology (which is still being used today in movie soundtracks) was invented and utilized in the 80's!
I think there should be a international "celebrate the tape" day
I much prefer the digital age. Better quality, lower costs and many more gadgets :D

OMG Harket LOL! when you mentioned 'lower costs' I remember a tape deck (made by a Japanese company called Nakichimi who made extremely high quality gear) that actually flipped the cassette over inside the player to play the other side! I still remember the price tag was ridiculously HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dude111 10-16-07, 01:34 PM I just think stuff was easier to use back in the 80s (And better made)
Take these cell phones today,TOTAL CRAP..... Keeps dropping calls, sounds like crap...... So small you can barely figure out how to use it!! (Back in the 80s and 90s when they first came out they were BIGGER AND SOUNDED MUCHO BETTER (Analog))
Analog sounds MUCH BETTER and thats 1 reason i like my VHS/Cassette tapes more.....
RetroMan 10-17-07, 10:13 AM Analog sounds MUCH BETTER
Now you're talking - Analog is the purest form of sound reproduction. Listen to record right though on a good system, then put on a CD right after - it's pretty amazing how sterile and flat it sounds. We've just accustomed our ears to CDs over the years because they're more compact, convenient and easier to come by.
A lot of people are probably unaware of this (and it will probably raise my nerd status) but it's common practice even today, for a band to record a full album in digital form, then the entire album is mastered onto analog tape THEN mastered back to digital for CD production.
This process gives it the 'warmth' and 'big sound' that digital tends to lack.
Mind you, this tape isn't what you used to put in your boombox - it's 5" wide on a colossal spool
This process isn't used on that Pussycat Dolls song you just heard on the radio - that's all about getting the music out there as quickly as possible before they become yesterdays big thing, so they don't even bother.
However this technique would've been used on say, something like say David Bowie or Radiohead's latest album - something with more substance and longevity
Analog tape is your friend and you probably don't know it :)
Dude111 10-17-07, 12:21 PM I know it believe you me!!
Listen to this AM-HD (IBOC) radio station clip.... SOUNDS LIKE CRAP..... NOT ENOUGH BASS,SOUNDS LIKE ITS IN A TIN CAN!!

Found this on another site and upped it here for easy access of it....Who else thinks it sounds bad??
Analog (Uncompressed) is MUCH BETTER........
RetroMan 10-17-07, 11:22 PM Analog (Uncompressed) is MUCH BETTER........
Well, naturally the file you're talking about here IS highly compressed which makes it much smaller for transferring / streaming over the internet.
It's the digital trade off - when you compress it, it's much much smaller, but it also downgrades the quality - the same thing is happening when you use a cell phone.
You'll find though, most people are happy with how it sounds because they usually have standard issue PC speakers and aren't really that fussy
Dude111 10-18-07, 03:26 AM Most people cannot tell a difference mate and its pathetic!!
People like that are whats making it HARDER for people like US to hold on to better quality things. (There arent enough people that complain to get something back the way it was (BETTER)) -- They are happy with garbage and thats sad............

dude, you shouldn't let this bother you so much to say that kind of stuff
Look at it like this: Some people out there drive Rolls Royce's. They know they are classy and wouldn't drive anything else. Then at the other end of the scale, some people drive "Heaven is closer than you think" cars with tons of rust and wobbly wheels. The driver of the deathmobile has never driven a Rolls Royce and really couldn't care less anyway, so he will always be satisfied with what he's got.
If everyone with deathmobiles start complaining and saying all cars should be like Rolls Royces, can you see Mr Royce dropping the price of his cars and making them more afforable/obtainable? No way! he knows his cars are quality stuff and people will always pay a zillion dollars for them!
It's the same thing with audio equipment. Just go with the flow Dude, like what you like :)
Dude111 10-18-07, 07:39 PM Ah man!!
May I ask how dvd is 2000 technology? Dvd, is just an cd upgrade and cd's are a dutch 80's invention. Like most of today's technology is just an upgrade of the 80's technology....
Dude111 10-22-07, 12:57 AM Yes and not a GOOD upgrade either :(
