View Full Version : claim to fame
Chrisscross 11-28-01, 01:22 PM Caligula and Outofplacechild gave me the idea with their posts in the 'What's everyone reading section'. This might have been on here already if it was, please bear with me.
What are the celebrities you have met? Where did you meet them and what was the meeting like? Did you react in a strange manner? Did you do anything you wish you hadn't done?
As some of you know, I met Limahl last summer which was quite fun but I did get the feeling I was a fan plus I insulted his friend by asking her if she was half Asian. Basically, she'd been in his videos and as a kid I used to pretend with my best friends that she was an Asian Princess (don't ask, I had a very weird childhood   )so the question just sort of popped out.
While I was living in Germany, I also met Volker Lechtenbrink for five seconds or so. Which, probably isn't much of a claim to fame in the first place. I'm sure Wave would agree). If I remember correctly, he was some singer/actor.
Met some Austrian has been named Peter Krauß. (Wave, I was a kid and I was just doing it for the fun of it. I do mean that). He was signing autogrpahs in Heilbronn. Heilbronn's a c*** town and only has-beens ever go there so you can imagine the quality of these 'celebrities'.
I think I may have met Rebecca DeMornay once but that one's vage. We were invited for passover when I was nine and there was a girl helping out in the kitchen. We started speaking and she was really nice to me even though I was just this kid. She also said she wanted to be an actress and that if all went well she would be in a movie with Tom Cruise called Risky Business. I can't remember that girl's name or her face so it's all a bit vage and may not have been her at all. And I'm not in touch with the family who invited us anymore.
Other than that, I can't think of anyone else. Except for two that I could have met but that never happened. But they did know my name. Does that count? ;)

I guess it must have been about 10 years ago but I used to live in a converted wharehouse with a bunch of friends. Because we had so much space a lot of lesser-known bands used to stay with us when they were in Toronto.
Gwar once, Scream a couple of times (their drummer was a guy named Dave Grohl), The Doughboys and lots that no one ever heard of again. Never saw or spoke to any of them after that. But I do have fond memories of those times. :)
80sTrivia 11-28-01, 06:23 PM I think we've done a similar thread to this some time ago.
I've met various famous authors at book signings and conventions, including Mary Higgins Clark, Stephen King, John Grisham and Sidney Sheldon.
I stood behind William Shatner going through the security gate at the Philadelphia International Airport.
Met Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, at an auto show when I was a geeky kid. Had my picture taken with her and her famous bosom.

outofplacechild 11-28-01, 07:13 PM Well, besides the Monaco factor (I'm a distant relative of the Royal Family of Monaco through Grace Kelly), I also met Jim Henson (creator of the Muppets) at Disney World in 1990. It was a few months before his death, but he was a wonderfully nice man. He even did the voice of Kermit The Frog for me and my brother. He was a genius...too bad he's been gone for over a decade now. :(
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff
That Guy Next Door 11-28-01, 09:57 PM Well, my stars ain't necessarily yours. I met Georges Fischer, current singer of Cannibal Corpse at a concert, Met Mike Mignola and had an autograph ( he's the guy who designed the character for disney Atlantis and had a comic called Hellboy ), Various french TV show host, Julie strain, the Heavy Metal magazine Muse ( she's white hot ! ). Uhm, ya gonna love this one. We were in Vegas, and Willy Nelson was having a concert. In the elevator, people were raving, and I didn't kow who he was at the time. I may have had other famous encounter that I don't recollect, but I won't tell not to make a mistake !.
And the most important part : It's all true, I'm not making that up !
TGND " I'm a star in my one man concert. I'm the singer, audience, the security and everything. I love the concert, but one man slam diving is bad, real bad "
Iluvthe80s 11-28-01, 11:14 PM I've met Kevin Rowland (lead singer of Dexy's Midnight Runners) at a concert in 1983. I met someone that knew him and got me backstage.
I got to talk to John Taylor of Duran Duran on the telephone. (Long story!)
I have met Siouxsie and the Banshees and Adam Ant at record signings.
Finally, I met Charlie Sexton. (That's pretty easy when he lives in my hometown and plays clubs a lot.)
80sTrivia 11-29-01, 12:02 AM What's Charlie Sexton up to these days, Stacy? My fave song from him is definitely "Beats So Lonely"; hard to believe he was only sixteen when it was recorded. Does he still perform concerts?
80sTrivia: Official Stalker of DD86 & jen* :D
Iluvthe80s 11-29-01, 12:05 AM He still performs here in town in clubs. Since "Beats So Lonely" he has made some solo albums plus performed with the band "Arc Angels" and the "Charlie Sexton Sextet". His brother, Will Sexton also performs around here too. When I was a teenager, he had a band called Will and The Kill I used to go see all the time.
80sTrivia 11-29-01, 12:09 AM Thanks for provided the information, Stacy. It's great to know that Charlie is still performing, as he obviously has so much talent! :)

ImSoooSure 11-29-01, 05:41 AM Dang OPC, a relation to Grace Kelly. There really are no more stars like her and Audry Hepburn anymore. And meeting Jim Henson and getting a Kermie voice has to be one of the best meetings! That's too cool.
I met Loretta Lynn when I was about 5 in a hotel parking lot. I met Jeannie C. Riley when I was 6. She sang Harper Valley PTA. :p
I was on Sesame Street when they came to visit my town when I was 7 and met Loretta Young. I think that was her name anyway. Something about Lorettas in that case. I think that's where my days of meeting the famous ended. I think I'm due a star meeting. ;)
Sometime circa 1974, my Dad was stationed in Memphis teaching ROTC at the university. Anyway. He told me one day that we were going to go out and see a famous singer. Okay... I was 7 years old. It didn't mean a lot to me. So, we drive out and stand in this long line. After about 20 minutes, this long haired hippie guy pulls up in a golf cart with two women. He stopped the cart, got out and started shaking people's hands (mine included). Years later, when I was old enough to know, Dad reminded me of that. Yup! I shook hands with Elvis Presley. :)
I met three of the Hooters after a concert one night. They opened for Bryan Adams. I gave their autographs away to a friend who didn't get to go. I remember the dark-haired one (Eric, I think ??) because he was the nicest and spent the most time (about 5 minutes) chatting with us. A friend sent me a signed Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) guitar pic. I don't know if I still have that or not. I'll have to look one of these days.
We did do this awhile back so I'll just name names of those that I've met.
Pat Benatar (of course...many times)
Neil Giraldo (Pat's husband & guitarist, and the rest of her band) Ray Brinker, Mick Mehan, & Cindy O'Connell
William Shatner (Kirk of Star Trek)

ImSoooSure 11-30-01, 01:52 AM I forgot! Vilji and I met Michael Damian from The YOung and the Restless and he also put out an album in the 80s. :)
Imsooosure, I remember he had a hit with 'Rock On', and I know it was a cover of someone else's song, but I can't remember who's.
Dang, Sarg!! That a lot of celebrities! And country stars, too. I thought you stuck to rock! ;) BTW, Pat Benatar's hubby is one hot mamma jamma!! LOL
Dancingdoll1986 11-30-01, 02:30 AM When I worked at the Holiday Inn in DT Cleveland, I met Lauryn Hill, Insane Clown Posse, Ben Folds Five, ALL of the WWF guys...and my all time fave...Rick Springfield!!! I was the Group CoOrdinater in the sales dept at the time, and I TOTALLY FREAKED!! When he came to check in, I got to go down and introduce myself, let him into his suite with his wife, let him know of all the hotspots here and ect. The next day, I brought in my ORIGINAL VINYL of "Working Class Dog" LP and begged him to sign it for me!! He did...and asked if he could buy it from me!! I declined that offer....I loved him on GH!! (*mmmmm* Dr. Noah Drake....YUMMY!!)
ImSoooSure 11-30-01, 05:02 AM Rick Springfield is still a hottie! :p

You could have met much worser 'celebs'...Heino comes readily to mind. :p
But please explain...what´s a c***town? Not that I´m related to Heilbronn...I´m just curious. ;)
The 'celeb sightings' I had were accidental...a school comrade and me had a little DJ service going back in the 80s. We were engaged as a replacement for the DJ who was supposed to entertain a party but happened to be sick that weekend. So, we asked another friend for a little driving service, packed our equipment in his VW Microbus and headed for this certain adress.
Our first thought was that we had mistaken the adress - we faced a neat house with a lot of expensive cars parked before. Okay, we rigged up our equipment and started to play some music (and felt very uncomfortable there...not only that we were just kids surrounded by adults, those adults had the looks of being worth some millions).
We nearly dropped a full load in our pants when we saw who entered the room about 2 hours later...yep, it were the Scorpions. This was a surprise party held by friends of them, and the surprise was also on our side. They even came to us for a few words, but I was so awestruck and excited, I can´t remember anymore what I said to them.
They left about an hour later as they were in the preparation for something, and we were more than generously paid for this evening, although we both thought that we did our shabbiest job so far.
With this as experience, we could have used it as a kind of entry card for getting big, but after having an serious argument a few weeks later, we splitted up.
Well, I´ve met another 'famous' person during the Altstadtfest in Hannover, but this belongs maybe to the Love Lounge... :D
Oh yeah, I´ve tried to sneak backstage during the 1984 concert of Depeche Mode here, but just before reaching the artists room, a hulk of a man stopped me and told me friendly that I better leave now. At least I could snatch a glimpse of my faves from a short distance...
