I just loaded WinXP Pro on one of my rigs and I'm not too impressed. This edition is even more active than ever with all kinds of automatic ongoings. And Media Player 7.1, I swear the thing has a mind of its own!

Others?

We just got a new computer about a month ago, and it came with XP. I have had a lot of problems configuring my cable modem with it. I think it's all sorted out now, finally. PHEW!!!

Other than that, I love the new colors and the way things transition smoothly. Of course I went from Win98 to WinXP. Quite a change there.

Well as an official "computer geek" I have all kinds of computer stuff around the pad but man, getting gear to work with XP has been a challenge. Get the product to the market and let the drivers catch up, we need cash flow to settle all these suits! At least the money is going to schools which is like so cool!

Norton Systemworks doesn't work with it. You have to get the upgrade.

Symantec pcAnywhere 10.0 doesn't work with it either, you have to buy the new version, soon to be released 10.5! They got me again! :p

Iīm currently using Win2K and 98SE on my comp, and so far, Iīm quite satisfied.
Only two programs are causing sometimes trouble, since the drivers werenīt exactly designed for Win2K, but I know how to deal with it.

XP...well, there are a lot of stories circulating, about the registration, spying of the user etc. Iīve decided to do like Iīve done with all Microsoft programs so far - waiting a year until itīs somehow finalized. ;)
Iīm a bit disappointed about the IE 6, they all said itīs better than the IE 5.5 but couldnīt notice any performance increase so far. Actually, the screen needs a bit longer to build up now. Very good are the security mechanisms - found out recently what kind of stuff is stored on the harddisk while surfing...

"Spying of the User" aka Big Brother

Well XP has come along in a time period when the surfing population has begun to really shift to broad band connections to the Internet. Well, with this "persistent" connection to the Internet, XP can easily run all kinds of lil' apps in the background that gather info from your computer and ship it off to Microsoft and Microsoft in turns sends stuff back to XP. For instant, the made to sound helpful "Windows Update" All in the name of marketing really, money makes the world go round, but, if you are like me and do not like snoops then some reg-edits can kill these types of back-apps and speed up your machine, only thing you risk is screwing up a registry which can result in a total re-install re-format forget it, put it out on the curb and buy a new one kind of scenario. So, don't play in the registry unless you know what your doing.

Don't worry jen*! Bill is just checking on you every now and then to see what he can sell you and your family next. :D

Cool down Jen...Big Gates already got you... :D

Itīs been a fact that when you are registering XP online, a complete setup of your comp is also going out to Seattle.
When XP was released here, a German computer mag wondered about the amount of data which is transmitted then - they said itīs about 512 KB when 32 KB would be enough for all relevant data. They went a little deeper inside this file and found out that all serial numbers of the installed hardware is a part of the data, and itīs also possible that it will also spy out your online access and the serials of your software.

And thatīs the point why Iīve hesitated so far...I think itīs not of Microsofts concern what is installed on my comp or what Iīm doing with it.

I heard the whole serial number thing to, but then I heard that this was all trash talk. I heard that you are simply locking in your install to your hardware so you can't jump from box to box. However, the vote is still out because I have yet to have anybody actually get a look at the code that "registers" a copy of XP.

There is actually a web site out there that broke down what was being sent. Don't remember the url.

I've been using XP for months now (part of the preview program, before getting the final code) and I am very happy with it. The stability is one of the biggest pluses for me. Beats the 9x code to pieces. Also, XP is much more compatible than W2K. Even with their compatibility upgrades, W2K just wouldn't run a lot of programs.

I've had no hardware issues and I get better frame rates when gaming than I do on my Millenium partition.

Have to say that I am very satisfied with XP so far.

Well got win2k on my main computer ( not this one ) It's important to me to have the NT kernel cause of stability. But then XP is NT based too then. so why did I turn down this friend proposal of mailin' me XP. First i need XP pro, cause my system is dual, and only Xp pro can handle two processor. And since I'm running 3D appz, I need all the memory I can get ( Maya runs on 512 Mb, but 1 GB would be perfect )And like every gen of windows, this baby is told to eat up even more RAM. Would be nice if they released a patch to improve memory management. Cause it's my main concern !!!!!
and no, Win2k, run smoothly on my bi PIII 800 Mhz. and I even have an SCSI HDD ( Ultra 160 ) Top that !

What will be be the better dual processor system? W2K or XP Pro?

I love the stability of XP Pro and the fact that you can convert partitions to NTFS if you want. But their new GUI... ugh! I still use the classic GUI.

I am buying the WindowsXP Professional for Chanukah. We have 7 'puters here in the house, 1 with Win98, (mine), 5 with Win2000Pro, and one WindowsNT Server. He's getting his 2000 Certification this next month, and we are EAGAR to get out little 'puter hands on the XP!!!

7 computers for one household, Gretchen. Isn't that a little excessive?

Well...in a nutshell...YES!!!! :D

Actually, Aron is the "computer geek" in our residence. He is a tech guy who used to work for Pioneer Standard, until he got downsized in a mass let-go. Now, he is running his own consulting company, (doing Data Recovery and such), and he partnered up with a Web Design firm, where he does the selling and gets a nifty bonus. So, out of the 7 'puters, 1 is mine, 1 is his laptop, and the others are ones that he can take customers computers up to his network so he can fix them.

I do the accounting, and phones. And moral support, and love, of course!!!!

They shouldboth be able to handle dual processors the same. They are both built on the NT kernel. As far as the GUI goes, I kind of like it. I have been customizing the 9x gui for years though. Either by using Litestep, Windowblinds and a few other programs. Recently I have taken to DesktopX, which I really like.

I actually multi-boot my system between ME & XP and XP is by far the best on managing my memory. I can't compare it to W2K, because I didn't run it long enough to really test it. XP seems to handle memory management on my system very well though.

I must concur with Shakey on the memory management being better in XP. Crystal clear difference between WinME and WinXP on that issue.
