View Full Version : Do strangers tell you stuff?
BrandyBlue 8-04-06, 01:33 PM This is always happening to me!
One day, while standing in line to register my car, this guy I didn't know from a hole in the ground starts telling me all his particular political/social views.
On another day, one woman in the ladies room started telling me how she leaks into her adult diaper all day. I've gotten several out of the blue marriage proposals.
I know there is a time for polite conversation to pass the time, just to be sociable. But man, for some reason, people like to really get into personal stuff with me and they don't even KNOW me!
Does anyone else here get that when they go places?
OMG! I always tell my husband that I must just have that kind of face. One that says, "tell me, I care." At least once or twice a week. Sometimes I get sick of being nice about it. This isn't even from my elderly clients, this is random people.
I had a lady tell me all about her job, the days her husband works, who was coming in for summer vacation, and precisely how often she washes down her walls and when, all the way around to her laundry. HONEY, I JUST NEED TO USE THE PHONE! :irked:
I've had people tell me about their bad marriages, abusive boyfriends, rotten kids, health problems, car trouble, and all manner of household mishaps. People in Wal-Mart, at restaurants, doctor's offices....I guess I just have that kind of face.....
Believe it or not, most of the time I don't mind because I figure the poor soul needs to vent, and who better to get it out to than someone who doesn't know you? Because who would I tell? No one I know would give a tinker's damn about someone they don't know, so it's not like I'd be gossiping about it to all my neighbors. All I'm doing is giving them ten minutes of my life to share their struggles, so what does it really cost me when it could mean the world of difference to them?
Now, when I'm in a hurry and have to cut them short on their war stories I feel bad, but I have a life of my own to take care of and I can't listen to everything. I figure whoever is making these people think I want to hear it will understand. ;)
Glad to see that I am not the only person that eveyone feels the need to tell all of their "personal" problems to. A few days ago I was going into a store and I see a elderly gentleman heading out of the store so I hold the door for him and as he passes by I say "Hi, how are you doing?" and he proceeds to tell me about all the stuff that leaks out of every orifice in his body. :ill: I feel bad for people like this because sometimes this is their only communication with other people.

Talking to strangers was originally forbidden according to the 15th Commandment. Click here for more details (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hUrWJacE_Q)

In my line of work, I get it all the time. I am used to it now. Just glad they can't read my mind. My face shows concern but in my head I am thinking...wtf are they wearing? Greasy hair needs washed. Breath mint! GAWD! I wish they would shut up. I don't care!! HELLO! Stop talking!! What was the name of that song? I need to paint my toenails when I get home. :D Thinking all that with a smile on my face and an oh yeah..that is awful or I am sorry comments. It is no wonder when I get home I am drained mentally and physically

Yeah, I used to get it all the time when I worked in the public, but it continues almost as much now that I am not, which is crazy! I hear WAY too much about people's hemmorhoids (man, if I never hear about another rhoid it will be too soon), how they can never find a deodorant that works in this weather, about how they hate using condoms, etc. DAMN! :dammit:
fungirl3 8-09-06, 10:50 PM Todays cashier will be played by fungirl3 at age 16...
Cashier: "Hi, how are you today?"
Customer: "I'm fine, but my husband is in surgery. Gang green. They're removing his foot today..." (goes into detail about soon to be removed foot...)
Cashier: "Hi, how are you today?"
Customer: "I've been better. Could you call the police? I'm feeling the urge to stab someone..."
Swear to god! I HATE small talk. I generally don't talk to people about anything other than the weather if I don't know them. And only if they talk to me first. I am always the one who gets stuck with Chatty McFreakshow! And poor me, I've been raised so polite I feel awful if I just walk away.
That's right... too polite!
I guess some are just more desperate to share their world with others. Not me, I'll stay out of your personal business, thanks.
Hmmmmm......maybe y'all should work for SSA. I hear it all day, every day. *sigh*

I can only imagine!
What makes a person look at a total stranger and think "I think she'd like to hear about how much my hooha hurt after I had my second kid..." or "This person looks like she would love to hear about my toilet habits."
I think one of the worst ones was the woman who told me all about how she gets yeast infections under her boobs :barf:
Ewwwwww! I don't think anyone has told me that one. THANK GOD!!!
The thing is....I work in a hearing office, so I get the people who have already been turned down for disability. Now they have to convince the judge that they really are disabled. Me.....I'm the middle man. I guess they think that if they can convince me....I'll convince the judge for them.
Sometimes I really miss teaching.
