View Full Version : Screen freezes? TopCat 9-20-05, 12:11 AM What causes the screen to completely freeze up? I had this happen twice today. My mouse froze in one place and nothing on my keyboard worked. I had to turn off power then restart. This is totally frustrating. :irked: Miss INXS 9-20-05, 12:27 AM When did this happen? Where you browsing a specific site? Or did it happen randomly? Did it happen when using the browser? Or did it also happen when your browser windows were closed too? Diofan 9-20-05, 12:39 AM Sounds like a memory issue to me. A good idea is to download and run Hijack This (http://www.awschell.com/support/hjtfile.htm)! Follow the instructions given on the page (The email link goes to my Webmaster account there so if you like that would work for you too). Roemello 9-20-05, 12:46 AM That used to happen with my old system... could be a memory issue as Diofan said... I'm pretty sure that's what mine was when it did the same... thing was too old and outta date  wavemaster 9-20-05, 12:59 AM What causes the screen to completely freeze up? I had this happen twice today. My mouse froze in one place and nothing on my keyboard worked. I had to turn off power then restart. This is totally frustrating. :irked: Close the door of the fridge. :bonk: :D Okay, seriously: this problem could be caused by a number of possibilities. 1. Your PC resp. certain components are overheating. Probably a good amount of dust has settled on the cooling devices of the graphics card, the CPU cooler/fan or the memory banks, causing heat spots and more or less crashes. Try to clean the components with a lint-free cloth or the vacuum (and with the appropriate caution - don't set the vac on "tornadic strength"!). 1.1 Probably the cooling device of the CPU is too weak. Replace it with a more powerful one (you still know where to send the tickets?). 1.2 The case needs a better ventilation. Proceed as in 1.1 (I'm used to travel 1st class). 2. Depending on the input devices - if you use cordfree ones, some products tend to crash the system once the battery of the mouse or the keyboard runs weak (which is more a matter of the driver). Sounds weird, but I had experienced it by myself, and in computers, nothing is impossible. I guess that you can replace the cells without my help. ;) If you use cable devices, check the proper installation of the driver(s). 3. Recently installed software might be the culprit. If in doubt, delete the software and check for further crashes. 4. Run a virus and spyware check. 5. Follow Diofan's advice. 6. Follow Shakey's advice. 7. Don't forget to make the tickets first class. :) JS 9-20-05, 01:03 AM What causes the screen to completely freeze up? I had this happen twice today. My mouse froze in one place and nothing on my keyboard worked. I had to turn off power then restart. This is totally frustrating. :irked: Sometimes, that happens to my computer. I had to press the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys--simultaneously--for my computer's screen to "thaw out." A good idea is to download and run Hijack This (http://www.awschell.com/support/hjtfile.htm)! Follow the instructions given on the page (The email link goes to my Webmaster account there so if you like that would work for you too). I just downloaded Hijack This! moments ago. TopCat 9-20-05, 08:05 AM This happened twice yesterday. Onvce when I was looking up info on my Sharp mircowave on the Sharp website then again whe I was posting a blog on myspace. I checked the interior of my computer and it looks clean enough. Besides that, there is some sort of anti dust thingie inside. I got 512mb of memory and 7.75 gb of used space with 43.8 of free space. I also have Macafee and Antivir gurad. running. I am going to check out Hijack This now. :) Thanks for all the help. :ghug: Wave..the ticket is on it's way..hope you like coach! :p PG 9-20-05, 08:18 AM Looking at to many naked men on the Internet is probably causing this to happen. I just re-booting & putting on some underwear. See if that helps. :D TopCat 9-20-05, 03:11 PM Looking at to many naked men on the Internet is probably causing this to happen. I just re-booting & putting on some underwear. See if that helps. :D I knew someone was going to say that! I don't have time to look at naked men. Ryan keps me well occupied. ;) I DL'd HijackThis but have no clue what to check and what to not check. Diofan 9-20-05, 05:51 PM I DL'd HijackThis but have no clue what to check and what to not check. Best thing to do, I'm assuming you've already installed it, Click the button that reads "Do a system scan and save a log file", take the resulting log file (If you've used the link I gave you, I created the installer and therefore at this point the log file will be found in C:\Program Files\Hijack This as hijackthis.log. Take that log file and either email it to me, Ingrid, or Shakey, whoever you feel comfortable with. They will analyze the log and tell you what to remove. What the log lists are programs and files the computer is "told" to start when you start the computer. Even nasty programs like trojans and viruses may be listed (If you have them). What we do is look for programs that are questionable or definite "no-no's" Once you have a listing of what we found, then Hijack This can further assist you by letting you determine what programs or files you want it to remove. This last step is very important! ONLY select files/programs you KNOW are no good...random guessing could wipe out an important system file needed to run windows. As for what to check and what not to check, your "Analyst" will list the files in question for you...those files are the ones to check. I've been wrong (many times) before. TopCat 9-23-05, 07:34 AM Thanks bunches Shakey . :) JS 9-24-05, 01:42 PM I just used Help2Go, Shakey. Thanks! :) |
