Sal are you talking about "Loco Motion" by Kylie Minogue, I may not have spelled her last name correctly? Kelly just told me this, this girl of mine freaks me out! I told you she knows more than I do!! LOL.

I thought I touch myself by the Divinyls was a very early 80s song...? Hmmm

The DeVynals song came out after teh gulf war (because i remember it was the first video i saw when i got back), so it was an 90s song. The locomotion was by Kylie Menoughyteshtshf (SPELLING? ANYONE? ANYONE?). But she did have another video for a song called "its no secret" where she had on a silver, skin tight dress with no bra or panties on. She is still a big star in europe and the middle east though. Speakig of which, I am not sure if any of you have ever been to the middle east, but one of thier biggest stars that people love is none other than one of my personal favoites, PHEOBE CATES! You can *NOT* go into a record store over there without seeing a photo or poster of her. good lord she was so hot. Ron

Loco Motion, ahh, the remake that came out in like '87 or '88... Sorry, gotta run out! :)

Grand Funk Railroad remade "Loco-motion" in the 70's. I don't know who did it originally.

Wow Phoebe Cates ay! Now there is a blast from the past - anyone remember her movie with Mathew Modine called Private School : ) Does she sing now or is she just a cultural icon over there. I hope more people come on from different countries and tell us about their 80s experience. It maybe with completely unknown stars to us but I am positive the over all cultural experience is going to have some similarities.

Jasper
2-10-00, 07:52 AM
Phoebe Cates is some type of cultural icon over there. A local told me it was because she has a 1/2 "western" 1/2 arab look. WHATEVER, All I know is that she was and IS HOT. How about these for other 1 hit wonders Alana Myles BLACK VELVET Toni(I think) Childs I DONT WANNA FALL IN LOVE Ron

Ayla
2-10-00, 12:09 PM
I wouldn't consider Allanah Myles a one hit wonder she had some other songs that were very big Love is Lover of Mine Still Got this Thing Ayla

I saw her in concert in 94 - she was pretty good : ) We had Expose come to town in 91 too and a friend of ours was a runner for the bands that came to town and he said they were the most difficult people to ever do things for - a bunch of 'b's' (they could have been having a bad week who knows).

Sal Collaziano
2-11-00, 01:19 PM
How did we get on the subject of Expose? Are one of the people we are talking about in Expose? I liked their music but they were a bunch of b's? hehe Oh well.. Figures.. Money and all that does bad things to you, I guess..

Kylie Minogue was huge in the UK. She's got one of the best selling album in the 80s. Banging out hits after hits, I guess you must have heard the song "I should be so lucky". Another Uk no. 1 I can remember is "Especially for you" . She sang with Jason Donovan. Both of them were from the Australian soap "Neighbours". Jason Donovan got another no. 1 UK single with the remake of "sealed with a kiss"

Does anyone remember..In a Big Country..that's the name of the song AND the group. I guess they knew they'd be one hit wonders. If you don't remember the name of the band, you'll remember the song..later! Nikki

It has Tracey Ullman, Musical Youth (pass the dutchie..) Madness and some other people.

Hey Pamster!!! Men Without Hats also did "Pop Goes The World". So I guess they would be a 2 hit wonder

anybody remeber these two songs?

"Rumors" by the Timex Social Club

and

"(I saw you) walking in the rain" Oran "Juice" Jones.
Best part of walking in the rain is the end where he goes off on the girl, tells her to get out, and professes
"you without me is like corn flakes without the milk!"

Yeah, I remember those songs. They actually get a lot of airplay in Austin. We just got this "oldies" station here. It mostly plays like 70's stuff. Very little 80's stuff.
Now I have that song in my head.."Look at all these rumors...surrounding me everyday".....

Big Country were definately not OHW's in the UK - they had 3 or 4 hits around back in 1983/4

I have noticed that... a lot of bands which were one hit wonders in the US were actually pretty big in the UK and probably vice versa. Although some of the music went international there are still some big differences between both cultures. I would have thought everyone had heard of Kylie Minogue... (not that I was a big fan )

Surprisingly, I actually remember Kylie Minogue and I live in Austin. I remember her videos for "I Should Be So Lucky" and "Locomotion" being played on VH1.-Nikki

Ron Tutor.. I definatly remember "Rumors" by the Timex Social Club. Great song and great beat.. Did you ever hear the other song that sounded like it called "Jealousy"? I think it was written by the same singer after he left the band...

Kylie a one hit wonder!! Gee you guys certainly don't live in the UK or in Australia then? She's had so many hits it's not funny. The Divinyls have been around since '78 '79 I think and had about 3 or so hits in the 80s and a few more in the 90s. I suppose it depends on where you live. But here in OZ these two certainly weren't one hit wonders.

What about these:
Marilyn - Calling Your Name
Fairground Attraction - Perfect
Genghis Khan - Moscow
Black Lace - Agadoo
Paul Lekakis - Boom Boom Boom (Let's Go Back To My Room)
Loverboy - Turn Me Loose
Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue
Matthew Wilder - Break My Stride
Sabrina - Boys
Koo De Tah - Too Young For Promises
The Escape Club - Wild Wild West
Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok
Visage - Fade To Grey
Haysi Fantayzee - Shiny Shiny
Quarter Flash - Harden My Heart
Toto Coelo - I Eat Cannibals

I have a few more but I'll put them up later.

Sheree!
Oh my gosh! You are the first person I have ever heard even mention Haysi Fantayzee and Marilyn! I LOVED those songs! Do you remember the videos? I went to a party once where we were all supposed to dress in some 80's fashion (I did the "mod" thing), and a friend of mine dressed like Haysi Fantayzee. He looked great.
Wow. Thanks for the memory!

Sheibub, Loverboy was definitely not a one hit wonder here in Canada, or the US for that matter.
It's funny to see what "makes it" in one country and not another.
I have seen Loverboy 12 times (can you tell I'm a fan ) and have met them numerous times. they produced 5 albums and 4 "Greatest Hits" albums (although alot of songs repeat them selves) they also wrote 3 songs for 3 different movies (hey there's a good trivia question I'm gonna post in Big 80's trivia!! )
Some of their hits were :
Turn me Loose
Working for the Weekend
The Kid is Hot tonite
When it's Over

Loverboy was as much a Canadian Staple in the 80s as white bread. They were a huge part of my 80s experience

Yep!!! me too. Loverboy was probably the second album I ever bought. Grade 7 on a field trip to Vancouver. We all used to sing the song "Prissy, Prissy" to a girl in our class LOL
They are still playing together in smaller venues, they are playing Whistler ,just outside of Vancouver on April 29th, I'm hoping to go up to see them

It is funny how some people are one hit wonders in some countries and huge in the others! I do remember Loverboy's 'Working For The Weekend'. Oops! But I think they were the only hits. I was was only a young'n then and am still remembering a lot of songs and groups so bear with me. It doesn't help when there is no place to look for 80s music charts for Australia. Only for the US. Bummer!

Sal Collaziano
4-19-00, 07:52 AM
Sheibub. Maybe you should create the 80s music chart list for Australia. :) I bet alot of Australians would love to check it out...

Sheibub
4-19-00, 08:04 PM
Ummm..Sal? How do I do that if even I don't know what was in the charts back then. The only charts I have found only go back as far as '89 - '90. Grrrrr..>:

Sal Collaziano
4-20-00, 04:28 AM
Ohhh.. That stinks.. I see where the problem lies! hehe Well, if you could ever somehow get that information. Ya know? Maybe you'll run into somebody on 80sXChange, at some point who could help you.. I hope we have enough people here to cover all angles!

I'm stuck on a name/song involving a One Hit Wonder. It was early 80's, he was french, I think he had blonde hair, and a red leather jacket in the video clip, and was jumping around like he had just swallowed a pogo stick. I think the singer was Plastic something, I'm not to sure.

The Allnighters also sang Montego Bay. Those in Australia might remember them they were a ska band in the early 80s

I can't believe you guys haven't heard of her! She was and is huge in the UK, Australia and all through Europe. She's the only female artist to have had number one hits in three decades, 80s, 90s and 2000. If you're from the States you might not have heard of her though. The Locomotion was originally recorded in the 50s by an American artist, but I can't remember her name - my mum would know

Aaron,

You are thinking of Plastic Bertrand. Maybe the song being Ca Plane Pour Moi. He did lots of other stuff. Several albums all the way into the 90's. He was also the drummer in a punk band in the 70's named Hubble Bubble.

I touch myself is from a band caled the Divinyls... They are far from a one hit wonder band. They have released many albums with hit singles like Boys In Town (Australian Classic), Pleasure and Pain, Back To the wall, Hey Little Boy, Science fiction, Good Die Young, Sleeping Beauty... just to name a few. The Divinyls are ranked very highly in Australian Music history. So just because you only know one song... does not mean they are a One Hit Wonder.
