View Full Version : 80s convention

80sTrivia

Gretchen (DD86) and I were discussing yesterday the possibility of organizing a sort of 80s convention to be held in a central location convenient to most people in this country. Naturally, a convention center would have to be booked well in advance, lodging arrangements would have to be made, and an agenda would have to be formulated. We would want there to be 80s stars (both musical and from other areas of entertainment) to be invited. We would probably want to have a swap meet, where people could buy and sell 80s merchandise and the ilk. Actually, the possibilities are quite limitless. This is just an idea, you must realize, and I am not volunteering to arrange the entire thing. But it is something to consider, and I imagine most people posting on this board would be interested in such an event! Ideas and comments???

Yay Michael!!

You got it posted!

I am right there. I think it would be great to be able to see everyone, and talk, and really have a kickass, old fashioned 80's party! I am all for organizing things...that's the fun part. Having been in the hotel industry in the reservations/revenue area, I know what needs to be done on that end. As well as what is needed to get through the convention bureau stuff. Anyone who is really into this idea, we were thinking maybe within the next 2 years or so. (Lots of ppl to organize!!!)

I can't wait!

we've been talking about doing something like this for a couple of years now.. it's just finding the people to organize it and finding that central location.. and what type of stars do you think we could get? And how could we get them?

Hey,.I'm always up for a party.. but these things take $$$ and we are trying to help fund this site as much as we can to keep it alive as well.

I am willing to help out in any way I can, though you two... so you name what you want me to do and I'm there!

P.S. Michael: What about a nice mansion on Rainbow Row? Or right off the water, near the battery?

New Orleans would be such a hoot!!! We could all get fat on pralines and krawfish!!! Yum!!!

I would love to have a house on Rainbow Row or Colonial Lake, but I don't have an extra three mill in my pocket to buy it!!!

To get an idea where to have the party why don't we all post where we are all from. Then we can figure out a good place to have the party?

I will start I am in

What we could do, is have everyone post their location in the US, and then give a 2nd place that they would like to visit. I can tabulate the places, and have a top 5 or 10.

How about that?

I'm in Ontario so no matter what I'm going to have to travel.

Maybe we could pick a time of year when travel is less expensive?? Also we have to think about venues. We need a big enough centre that there are airports for big planes. Just let me know by March so I can book the time off for the following year :)

Oh Wait!!! What about an 80s cruise????? Say 3 years from now. We could take up an entire floor of the ship :) But what stars would come??? (please not kathy lee 0 PUHLEEZ!!!!!).

Vilji
9-06-01, 01:43 AM
an 80's cruise!

maybe we could get Capt. Stubing, too..

:p
that would be so fun,,especially if we could have a huge section for ourselves to play loud music and be wild.

sounds expensive, though. think they'll have some kind of discount rate for a certain number of people in a group?

well, Ky's not too far from Tx, New Orleans, etc..
Do you think it would be easier to have the group vote where it will be?
(out of choices that atleast 2 or 3 people have suggested?)

just a thought
:)

A cruise! That's a fantastic idea! We could arrange a three day, all-inclusive package cruise, which should be cheap; say... $450 or something along those lines! I think this is actually a very viable idea, guys! Any more comments?

MDC: Official Stalker of DD86 :D

Vilji

i think a cruise is an awesome idea

i wanted everyone to gather near an ocean from the start. (something about the total freedom it feels like..)

plus, the cruise would have so many different things to do and entertain ourselves with.
no one would ever get bored.

a package deal for a price would be great. but would it be expensive for people to pitch in for that and travel to the starting place of the cruise?

i've always wanted to see a sunset on a ship..

80sTrivia
9-06-01, 02:51 PM
I'm not a travel agent, but I think an all-inclusive package could be arranged, with airfare included. Sal could probably answer this question better. Of course, if peeps (in the States) couldn't afford the airfare, there will always be the option to drive to the port-of-departure city.

You know what might be easier for everyone is have two parties........one on the east coast and one on the west coast. Do you all think thats feasable? I know alota the main xchangers live on the east coast so it might be easier for them. The cruise idea would be awesome! Or what might be really cool is have the cruise go to europe and maybe we could meet the rest of the xchangers there! I have a friend who did that and he said it was cool.

Smurf had mentioned a possible convention in another thread. I suggested that we pick Chicago or somewhere like that. Everyone would be responsible for there own travels & room (Maybe getting a good deal through Sal's connections). We'd reserve a block of rooms with a conference room too and that would be party central! We'd all chip in for party stuff. Fri and Sat dring the day, everyone can sightsee, then on Sat night would be the bash. I've done something like this before, it was a lot of fun! It's just a thought :)

Chicago?

that airport is Huge! i stopped there on the way to L.A., and almost missed my next plane. -and i'm used to the Atlanta airport.
we'd lose some of the members forever. they'd say 'screw it' and go to Rio.

oh, lol. no, i wasn't suggesting Atlanta at all. it should prob be either more central or west somewhere. Calif. would be a blast. but it's prob too far for most. we should prob just have everyone vote (and maybe get 2 different people recording the results or something over time.)
vote out of all the choices, then vote again, then again out of the few left. even the cruise idea can be included in the voting, i'd say.

any suggestions from someone in travel would be cool, too. so we have an idea of conviences, etc..

In two years I hope all is well and we can do this. I think in the spirit of our friendship and the love for the 80s we shouldn't let this go - especially now. I think we bonded before but after the love and support everyone has shown in the last week it would be a shame not to meet and PARTY!!!!!

Would Livesay play - please please please???

I'm favorable to Chicago but like I said I can fly anywhere. If its a north central city we should aim at spring or fall where its not too hot or cold. Our Yorkville is where all the tres chic boutiques and salons are. Lots of expensive night clubs and restaurants. The movie stars all hang out there when they are in town.

I still believe the most viable option is to book an 80s cruise, perhaps to the Bahamas. Sal, as you are in the travel industry, you will probably know all the proper procedures to book a specific theme cruise. It could be a 2 to 3 day cruise (people could choose to stay 2 or 3 nights, depending on what they could afford.) As most cruises leave from Florida, people would have the option of driving to the departure city (i.e. Miami). Depending on how many people booked the cruise in advance, we might be able to attract some 80s acts to perform concerts. It would also be simple to arrange screenings of 80s movies (Sixteen Candles, et. al) in the ships cineplexes. Of course, the ships discos would play all-80s. I think this is probably the most feasible plan. We could schedule the cruise in the late summer/fall of next year, giving everyone time to raise the money. It wouldn't be overly expensive, perhaps $450-600, air-inclusive. Any thoughts, comments or ideas???

$450 for a cruise plus airfare?! Are we taking a 3 hour cruise - cool 80s people shipwrecked.

I think if its a cruise we are looking at some serious cash - like $1500 at least.

I could do a cruise in two years :)

80sTrivia
10-28-01, 08:59 AM
Zel, actually I've taken several cruises for less than $600; I took a three day cruise to the Bahamas and another three day cruise to Escondido, Mexico. :) If it were a week-long cruise, we'd probably be talking $1000+.

The cruise idea sounds really great but to expensive. :( I think meeting in a central location would be cheaper. We could have a fund raiser,or donations, to help cut costs for those who need help. :)

I wouldn't mind being shipwrecked with ya. You can climb my "palm tree" and gather my "coconuts" any day Zel ;)

A cruise doesn't sound to bad, just have to come up with the cash first. :)

So, if we are going to hold this convention in Canada, we are going to need to scout a venue. I say that the most viable place to hold the convention would be at a nice hotel or lodge with a reasonably large meeting hall. I vote that it will be up to our Canadian buds to find the perfect spot. I think it should be in the Toronto area, which will be most accessible to peeps in Canada and the States. We will also need to pick a date. This should be a three day deal, (Fri., Sat. and Sun.). August or September would be a good time, IMO. Also, we are going to need to think of ways to collect money to rent out the convention hall! We've got some brainstorming to do, fellows!

Tons of good hotels with facilities all around Toronto if folks are really interested. There are lots downtown (best choice) and lots around the airport too. The airport is a little out of the way though.

Similar to most big cities Zel. Rooms at places like the City Hall Sheraton and Marriott by the Eaton Centre go for around $120 Canadian per night if you walk in off the street. Deals can certainly be had. Places like Holiday Inn would be cheaper too.

Almost all have their own ballrooms and meeting rooms. It all depends on a) what kind of events were being hosted and b) how many people.

If it's just a decent sized party as opposed to a full-fledged convention there are a lot of things to take advantage of also. CFNY and MIX 99.9 both do weekend 80s broadcasts from big clubs (listen over the internet if you're curious). I'm sure there is a lot more if I bothered to look. LOL :D

Hi there!
Since this is the sort of thing that I do for a living, I thought I would throw my 2 cents in with some logistics if you guys are still interested in doing this.

A cruise is a good idea. From September until right before Christmas is off season. You can do a 3 night cruise from Port Canaveral on Carnival's "Fantasy" or Royal Caribbean's "Sovereign of the Seas" for about $325 per person, based on 2 people in the room. Airfare would be extra. The closest airport would be Orlando.
If you want to have a private party on board the ship, that's extra, but it can be done.

If you want to do it at a hotel, you probably want to do it somewhere that everyone can easily get to. So, I'd say, LasVegas, NewYork, Orlando, Chicago, Dallas or LosAngeles. The cheapest of those cities for accomodations would be Orlando.
There's quite a few for around $40.00 per night. You could try and organize it around seeing a show at "The Hard Rock". maybe when there might be an '80s band in town.
Other than that, how do you plan to contact any '80s celebrities?
Do you want to advertise this on other '80s message boards, or is just for this message board?
There's going to be deposits that the hotel is going to want, for the rooms and for the meeting space. Do you want to have a banquet/party with DJ? Car rental? Transfers from the airport?
A lot of details...

Just some stuff to think about!

Vegas would be awesome. You can get some really good package deals, esp. in the summer months (if you can stand the sweltering heat) http://home.no.net/ungpike/emoticons/svette.gif

The last three times I went, I bought packages through my travel agent that included airfare & hotel, and it was really reasonable. I have found that its cheaper to stay over the weekends, because so many people travel there during the week for conventions, etc. The times before that, I purchased hotel & air seperate & it was pretty expensive...

As long as you can limit your gambling money, it's not a bad deal. ;)

Believe it or not, a cruise is less expensive than you think. I know you can book in advance and pay it off like layaway. Then you only need to bring enough money for souvenirs and tips for your wait staff.

prob the cheapest way would be the best bet for most of us, right? there should prob be a vote or something, so we can get the plans going. :) :bouncy:

maybe we could get a few to check out the prices and info of a meeting on land or cruise, and places, etc. Once we know more, we could vote and then get the plans rolling. I have no idea where to look, myself.

Vegas for a meeting? I'm not too far, but I don't know...it's so....busy! lol. we might feel stifled, unless we payed mega bucks to use a large space or something. but I have no idea, I'm just rambling..

I was thinking about the convention idea, and thought instead of hiring out a huge convention center which costs a bomb how abourt starting smaller, like booking an 80's style motel or resort (of which there are still a ton) and doing an 80's theme weekend for a few hundred people, and then building it up from there. I think people would be interested. You could still have vendors and maybe have 80's tribute bands and of course an 80's disco + during the day show movies and old tv shows. Any interest?

Vilji
3-14-04, 10:11 PM
that sounds great.
but I remember awhile back, people on the xchange were saying they'd rather have more than one party, because of the far travel distances. Maybe 2 or 3, one near the east coast, one near the west or something. Then the people who know which one is easier for them can talk and decide exactly where and how, etc. -just thoughts off the top of my head again. :)

Hey Kids,

Just a suggestion, maybe instead of trying to organize an entire national convention, maybe we should just start with meet-ups? I've seen this used for tech geeks, book freaks and political nuts, so why couldn't it be used for 80's fans as well?

Take a look here (http://www.meetup.com/) and put in your zip code. You'll see what I mean. I think you only need like five people to be considered a 'group'.

Once again, just a suggestion to start the organizing process.

Ah! And as it turns out, they already have a group set up for 80's music fans: http://80smusic.meetup.com/

Come on. if not I will have to come to america and show you yankees how to party.

That 80s meetup site is kinda cool.. however not many people register with it... I put in about 5 zipcodes near me and there's NOBODY.. :(

I would much rather get an 80s convention for JUST our members here!

I agree with Tinajo, I'd rather it be exclusive for all of us, that way we at least know who a percentage of the people are.

I would definately go to that. I have some rels out that way. Plus I could probably get a couple of free rooms in one of the hotels.

Me and Lostboy were also thinking of a cruise for the West Coasters or something close to it.

What do you mean there is nothing to do in Vegas???

You have tons of strip joints, bars , dance clubs, shows, amusement parks, restaurants, shoppinge malls, and they do have a water park. Not to mention The Gardens a place to get wild at. :D

Louisville is not that large of a city compared to some others, but we have all that stuff 24/7. Restaurants, strip/dance clubs, water/amusement parks, malls, and a mile strip with 25+ bars. If you want gambling, take a 20 minute drive to Southern Indiana and hop on the casino boat.

Don't get me wrong, Vegas is fun but just overhyped when other cities have close to the same offerings. :yesnod:

Well how about this. We Californians have a meeting in Vegas and ya'll near Kentucky can meet there. ;)

I'm with XXX, I can drive to Vegas in about 4 hours. But heck it will take me much longer to get to Kentucky. And well if I'm heading towards Kentucky I might just go to Okalahoma to see someone there that I've been dying to meet. :D ( Then I would never make it to Kentucky :mwaha: )
