I was recently in a debate about death metal vocals with a friend of mine who listens to mainly power/prog metal. What do any of you think of this style of vocals? I love them if I can understand a majority of what's being said..LOL..But even those that are difficult to understand really add an important element to the music..in fact..I consider the vocals just another instrument. I could imagine that my throat would be very sore after singing like that for a whole concert! The gruff voice really captures the emotion in the song...

Power and Progressive Metal.. I will have to check some of that out tonight.. I will defiatly look into it. It sounds interesting.. Is the growl like Death Metal?

Any form of expression is good...Death metal vocalists are in a definite league of their own!!! It's not easy to growl like that...I have nothing but respect for it!

Death metal lyrics are goof if they're done right.
There's a lot albums out there with killer music
but weak vocals and it does detract from the
overall effect.

Good point, CertainDeath.. The vocals are what make death metal and they need to be high quality...

i wonder why most singer got to trade between speed and heaviness. i mean Rahmer, the mortician Guy ( CCCOOOLLL )
is heavy but slow, Chris Barnes too. Georges fischer ( corpsegrinder ) Helmkamp ( angelcorpse) are faster but not so heavy. Which is why I love Disgorge ( Cal ) because Matti Way is heavy and fast. Any opinion about this tradeoff ?

Power metal has no growling. Power metal is Blind Guardian, Manowar and even Iron Maiden. Progressive metal is Opeth...
