If you're going out to buy a comp, best bet is to go to a computer store like CompUSA or Circuit City....less likely to get screwed with a piece of junk at one of those

I got $100. off this one, and it's one step up from the other, but I still called the district manager about it. He'd better call me back, too!! Poopy little.....I tell ya....topcat, my printer and scanner are hooked up, so if Roem will tell me where to download stuff, we'll be set...***hint, hint***

I have no idea what is going on with this thing. It keeps clicking out and saying my modem is messed up. I think I am destined to be stuck with crappy little machines that do things without my knowledge and won't let me know what's going on.....

Blaziegirl

Puleeze, are you having problems with the second computer also? Explain what's going on with it maybe I can help ya out

When I try to connect, it tells me my modem is not connected properly and disconnects me. Then it will throw me out for no reason. Then the screen will click out when I'm trying to do something and it will say 'Error was detected. Press enter to restart windows, or ctrl+alt+del to restart comp, or punch any key to continue. Hubby thought he fixed it going through trouble shooter, but it did it twice before it let me on here. Stinkin' machine...

Are you able to sign on with the new comp now? If so, here's a link to a site that I use once a month to make sure everything's working properly with mine... http://pcpitstop.com/ it only takes about 10 minutes & it will walk you through any changes you need to make with your settings

Kind of sounds like you have a corrupt file somewhere on your system. What version of Windows are you running (if Windows at all. Mac maybe)? What kind of modem do you have (Go to the modem icon in the control panel)? Does this kind of behavior ONLY occur when trying to connect, or does your screen blink even when not connecting?

Roemello

Roems right, Windows ME is a huge pain in the A** I know all about it! I finally have mine working great

Puleeze, you should take it back to the store for another replacement just in case there's something wrong with the hardware... I went through 4 computers from best buy before I got one that I was able to deal with.

Are you using MSN or AOL?

Get Out!! How did you know?? Psychic...kept clicking out all the dang time!!! Piece of *&$%@#. I am now on comp #3, if that isn't disgusting....I have Windows ME, a 56K modem (that's what the 12 year old who sold it to me said a V.90 equaled out to) and I haven't connected my printer or scanner yet. Why did it cut out like that, Shakey?

Roemy, I now have a Compaq from Circuit City with a primo warranty on the tower!!! Wal-Mart is officially on my no-go zone list!! Nasty woman!

I copied down your site address, Blazie, and I will be sure to use it!!! Thanx!!!

Sounds like maybe it is a bad driver. I would suggest going to the web page of both the video and modem manufacturers web sites and downloading the current release.

Pretty easy to find out what is on your system. Click on the "Start"button, go to "Settings" amd then "Control Panel". Once that is open, double click the modem icon and see what it has listed for your modem. Close that and double click on display. Click on "Settings" (sixth tab from the left) and then the "Advanced" button (near the bottom). Now click on the "Adaptor" tab (second from the left) and see who it is that makes our video card.

You should just be able to find their web sites by searching Yahoo. If not, tell me the info and I'll find it for you.

I just got off the phone with tech support for my internet, because this new comp threw me off (I think it was 100 times, wasn't it, Roem?) like crazy last night. The guy had me change all sorts of stuff....Hopefully it works. If it doesn't, Shakey, I am going to come back in here and write all of that down!!! Believe you me, I know exactly where the control panel is now and at least two ways to get there!!!

OK, here's what I have so far......I have been in and out of pcpitstop like twelve times today....the webaccellerator does not exist, as far as I can tell. There is an error reading in drive D, my comp puts up a prompt that says "Repair error and finish scan" (it wants to mark that area as 'bad' because it contains no files but has an error), I click to repair it and the prompt just keeps coming back....It won't let me use 'ignore and finish' either. I had to restart my comp to get my mouse pointer back. The pcpitstop says that I don't need to do anything else with drive C or D right now. Now What? It also says my internet is back on track, so I guess we shall see. I have been sitting here for almost three hours, so I am taking a break. Machines do suck, you know. LOL

You should have seen me when I first got a Computer 2 years ago Copy & Paste were alien to me

OK, if you have Windows ME this is the easy way... Left click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Select Disk Cleanup a box will pop, up click on ok and it'll show you every thing you can get rid of, I dump everything in there constantly because there are 3 of us using the computer and a lot of stuff builds up that can slow your computer down.

If you don't have ME.... Right Click Start, Select Explore, on the left side of the browser box select C:/ Drive, Scroll down to the (Temporary Internet Files) folder Hi-light it to open, Now at the top of the browser window select Edit then (select all) this will hi-light everything in the folder, then select (file) & (delete)

PS. If you use the second option it also gets rid of the cookies

Here's a quick trick for emptying your temp internet files:

If you use Internet Explorer:
Right click the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.
Choose "Properties" from the list that pops up.
On the "General" tab you should see a button under "Temporary Internet Files" that says "Delete Files".
Might be slightly different depending on the version of IE you are using.

If you use Netscape:
Open Netscape and on the menus at the top choose "Edit" then "Preferences".
At the bottom of the Category List is "Advanced". Click the "+" beside "Advanced".
This should expand to show you a couple of options one of which is "Cache".
If you click once on "Cache" you will see a couple of buttons on the right and you want to click on the one that says "Clear Disk Cache"

These are not any kind of panacea but they help a little bit for overall PC health.

Hope this helps a little.

7-04-01, 09:51 PM
Puleeze, did you solve that problem with your D Drive at PcPitstop?

I don't know how much you know about computers so here's a couple of other things you'll need to do depending on how much you use your computer... You'll find these programs under system tools, run a (Thorough) ScanDisk on you hard drive then run the (Disk Defragmenter) in that order, I do mine once every 2 weeks

Shakey
7-05-01, 09:08 AM
Yeah! I would definitely run scan disk. It almost sounded like you were describing a bad sector. That is when an area of your hard drive has become defective. That's bad. As for the web accelerator. I tend to stay away from those kinds of programs. They sometimes change system files and can corrupt your configuration.

Run scan disk and see what it comes up with. Let me know.

ValJ
7-05-01, 01:14 PM
We have run scan disk about six times...and called Compaq about it....they say it may be a compressed file that is freezing the scan disk at that sector, but I think they are full of b.s. It won't even let the repair go through. The pcpitstop told me my computer was fine, should be fast because of all the free space, and nothing to worry about right now. I still get booted, but not as often, and only when I am in the chat....Heard that could be because of the chat itself using memory and too many start up programs running when not in use...My AOL gets my but booted right out of the chat, too, so I have to turn it off. I know you guys probably hate me by now, but thanks for helping!! LOL I am awful at this...

Almost forgot!!! It freezes at 618 thousand five hundred and something....and I have turned off a lot of the programs that I don't usually use so they don't come on at start up....

Puleeze, are you using AOL 5.0 or 6.0? If your using Windows ME with AOL 6.0 thats where your problem is, I had to switch back to AOL 5.0 to fix my chat freezing & numerous other problems.. There is a patch that Microsoft put out to fix it but I stayed with the 5.0 and didn't try the patch... Let me know what your using and I'll put the link to the patch here for you if you need it.. I also have an extra 5.0 Disk if you need one because you can't get them anymore not even from AOL

I'll have to leave the AOL to you, Blazie. I am AOL illiterate. Never used it.

As for scandisk, are you running that in windows or in DOS. Scandisk tends to be finicky in Windows. You may have processes running that will not allow it to run completely. You can boot into DOS (using your Win ME startup disk) and run scandisk form there. If you haven't created a startup disk, you can do so through the control panel. Just go to add/remove programs and it should be the third tab on the right. Insert a floppy and it should create it for you. After that, just reboot, go into DOS and type scandisk. I think Win ME still has it loaded. Not sure?

ValJ
