I'm not sure now if the song is about a man or woman. The video featured a woman.

Nikita is typically a man's name in Russia (Nikita Kruschev for example). But the video definitely focused on a woman.

I thought I once heard that he had written it about a female border guard but I could certainly be wrong.

The original french movie La Femme Nikita (later copied into Point of No Return for American audiences) was about a woman named Nikita.
