View Full Version : Best/Memorable albums in the 80's...
Nikki_91 11-07-00, 11:11 PM The best/memorable albums of the 80's..
First I have to mention Madonna. She first break came with her self-titled album-"Madonna" which featured Borderline and Lucky star, but it wasn't until "Like A Virgin" that she got major recognition.
Janet Jackson proved that she was more than just another Jackson. Her debut album "Control" gave her 5 hit songs and showed us who's in control.
Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet" was a good follow-up to 7800 Farenheit.

Check ya later-I'm outta here!*Nikki*
Slippery WHen Wet DEFINATELY was great!
Purple Rain is a fabulous work, even though people claim to hold Prince in high regard, I feel he is still an underrated GENIOUS.
THriller: well, it IS the best selling record of all time.
I can think of a ton more, but they would just take up space. These are probably 3 of THE BEST from the 80s

Sal Collaziano 11-11-00, 02:11 AM Hmm. Tough one to add more to. I think I might add Guns 'n Roses "Appetite for Destruction" in there too - for the Rock scene. I'm pretty sure I liked about all the songs on that album.. Also, maybe Whitesnake's self-entitled album from I think 1987...

no cryin now for what we're missin
time won't forget what you meant to me
Roemello 11-11-00, 03:29 AM I like pretty much what everyone's popped up so far...especially Slippery When Wet and just about any of Madonna's earlier works.
Being one who likes New Wave, I'd have to add Duran Duran's "Rio" http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

ZZTop-Eliminator
Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble-Live
Police-Synchronicity
Def Leppard-Pyromania
Journey-Frontiers
There are a lot more. These along with the ones mentioned above are the most memorable for me.
Amy Livin 11-12-00, 02:30 PM Slippery When Wet!!! Slippery When Wet!!!! Yeah!!!! Bon Jovi rules!!!! Oh, and Appetite For Destruction rocked too but there are a few (2) songs I don't like on there. Take me down to the paradice city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty...
Methinks I'm hyper today.

Oh I like most of these albums that were mentioned but for me the best album in the 80's was Pink Floyd The Wall (now I know this album was released in Nov.1979, but that's just a technicality!!http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif )
Alien Shores by Platinum Blonde was also great, IMO http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

djdaffy1227 6-25-01, 12:39 PM I'm glad we're back on this topic. My picks last time were:
High infidelity-REO Speedwagon
Paradise theatre-Styx
4-Foreigner
Sign o' the times-Prince
Controversy-Prince
(all of Prince's albums)
(Who's afraid of)-The Art of Noise
Number of the beast-Iron Maiden
Blizzard of ozz-Ozzy Osbourne
One I would like to add:
Computer world-Kraftwerk. An absolute piece of art. Was it New Wave? Alternative? After all the only time I ever saw the video for "Pocket calculator" was on 120 minutes. Was it R&B? After all the biggest single from the album,"Numbers", didn't go pop but it did go to #22 on the R&B charts. Was it pop? It defies all musical genres!
Just as a side note "Contol" was actually Janet's third album but who's counting. All in all a great list of albums (Except "New Jersey" but we all know how I feel about that)
Before I make anybody mad about that last statement just let me say this my opinion and my opinion only. I realize many many people like that album, please no hate responses to me.

the ozzman 6-25-01, 06:12 PM Afew gems not mentioned Permanent waves,Rush
Closer,Joy Division, and 2from the UK which probably surpasses all. The Wall,Pink Floyd and Londons Calling,The Clash 2contracting styles but well worth listening too.
Ah, there really were so many. Lots of good ones mentioned here already.
Two that come to mind now are actually by the same band. Each record was truly significant in its own right when it was released.
By Simple Minds:
New Gold Dream (September '82) was envigorating. All those marvellous tracks "Someone, Somewhere in Summertime", "New Gold Dream", "Promised You a Miracle", "Glittering Prize". I don't think I went to party anywhere in late '82 and early '83 without hearing the whole album played at least twice. We knew from the minute we heard it that this kind of stuff was here to stay.
Sparkle in the Rain (February '84) just blasted out of the radio. I remember the first track I heard was "Waterfront" with its massive, driving bass and drums. There was an incredible feel to the whole album and tracks like "Up on the Catwalk" and "Speed Your Love" still make it on to most of my little compilations for long drives.

I love the Chameleons UK. I've got all three of those albums, and even 'The Fan and the Bellows' and still listen to them on a regular basis :thumb:
-----------
Avalon - Roxy Music (1982) This was the album that gave Ferry and the boys MAJOR success in Canada with the singles 'More Than This' and 'Take A Chance With Me'. Definately a memorable album indeed
Drums and Wires - XTC (1979) A late 1979 release i Know, but it was XTC's breakthrough in Canada and featured two top 20 hits in 1980 with 'Making Plans For Nigel' and 'Life Begins at the Hop'
Black Cars - Gino Vannelli (1984) As far as I can remember, Black Cars was his voyage into New Wave and still remains quite possibly his best work IMO
The Seer - Big Country (1986) Sadly, it failed to ignite in America, but it it helped cement them into the Canadian charts again with the song 'Look Away', which proved there was more to them than just 'In A Big Country'
How to Be A Zillionaire - ABC (1985) Even after losing two original members, ABC proved that they could still produce great songs, and with this release, they did just that
The Crush - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (1985) With this release, OMD proved that you can use "real drums" to make a record still sound great

post_modern 11-09-04, 11:37 AM My ten most memorable albums of the 1980s
Heartbeat City - The Cars (1984) : Five of the ten tracks on this album charted, but every single one of them could have easily been released as a single. This album marked the pinnacle of the Cars' evolution; a sound that successfully blended New York garage rock and synthesized pop. 'Magic' remains one of my favorite feel-good songs of all time, and will forever be my soundtrack for the summer of 1984 (the greatest summer of my childhood).
Synchronicity - The Police (1983) : Topping the U.S. album charts for 17 consecutive weeks, 'Synchronicity' singlehandedly validated 80s popular music with its superb musicianship and intense, cerebral song writing. I consider 'Every Breath You Take' to be one of the most haunting, evocative songs of all time.
Purple Rain - Prince (1984): With this album, Prince successfully fused R&B and funk with hard rock in an unprecedented manner. As uncompromising as Prince is, this album was nonetheless destined for mainstream success. I practically get chills when I listen to the guitar play of the title track.
Pyromania - Def Leppard (1983): Perhaps my favorite hard rock album of all time. Blending powerful guitar riffs with catchy hooks and melodies, this extremely polished album ushered in a sound that would set the standard for hard rock in the 80s. This is perhaps what I miss the most about 80s music.
Play Deep - The Outfield (1985): A grossly underrated debut album, Play Deep compiles ten outstanding and perfectly arranged tracks. When people recall 'the Outfield', they usually associate the band with their best known track, 'Your Love'. As much as I enjoyed that song, it only scratched the surface of this great album.
Building the Perfect Beast - Don Henley (1984): The sharp synthesizer sounds and crisp production made this album radio friendly, and as such, a good vehicle for Henley to convey his thoughtfully crafted critique of society moving too fast for its own good. 'Boys of Summer' is a haunting commentary from the perspective of a man who desperately wants to relive the past but knows he can't.
Loverboy- Loverboy (1980) This album isn’t for everyone, and Loverboy tends to be dismissed as "fluff", but their self-titled debut was a unique blend of hard rock guitar and new wave synthesizer. There wasn’t a single track I didn’t enjoy, and ‘Turn Me Loose’ was essential listening when I was trying to psyche myself up before a hockey game. Very popular fare on my ghetto blaster!
Born in the U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen (1984): As a writer, Bruce Springsteen creates characters in his songs and tells their story. The stories often play on themes of desperation, unrest and alienation. It seems absolutely remarkable to me that an album narrating these messages could yield 7 top-ten hits. 'Born in the USA' is one of the most heartfelt, passionate and politically conscious albums of the 80s.
Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty (1989): Twelve solid tracks (4 of them bona fide hits), this album marked Tom Petty's first collaboration with producer Jeff Lynne of E.L.O. The pair was able to create a new sound for Petty that preserved the essence of his earlier stylings and blended them with infectious harmonies, cleaner guitar sounds and keyboard play.
Avalon - Roxy Music (1982): To this day, if there's a prospect for a single man to entertain female company at his house/apartment, Avalon should definitely be queued in the CD changer and ready to play! Oh, and just as an aside, this is the most breathtakingly beautiful album cover I've ever seen.
Poptronixx 1-07-05, 06:41 PM In no particular order, here are just some of my best/memorable albums of the 80's as follows:
1. Peter Gabriel - SO album (1986).
I remember this one very well because the Sledgehammer video was one of the most played videos at that time. I also remember that many radio stations in the UK played nearly every song off the 'SO' album. For me, the 'SO' album is one of Peter's best to date. This was one of a few albums to be digitally mastered onto CD for the first time.
2. Go West - Go West album (first album 1985), and Bangs & Crashes (1986).
what a great album ! I became an instant fan when I heard their first song, 'We Close Our Eyes' in 1985, and I saved up all my pocket money to buy their albums. However, I'm still a fan and have all their albums.
3. The Power Station - The Power Station album (the first album 1985).
I remembered that a lot of Duran fans bought this album mainly because of John Taylor. Robert Palmer took the best part of the Duran band and left Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes to form Arcadia. I love this album. It has great tunes and songwriting together with great vocals from Robert Palmer.
I would say that Duran Duran actually had a great year in 1985. Duran Duran had a hit with 'A View To A Kill’ ; The Power Station had a hit with 'Some Like It Hot', and Arcadia had a hit with 'Election Day'.
4. Chicago - 17 album (1984).
This album is class ! I love all the songs on it. I believe that this was Peter Cetera's last album before leaving the band, but it was a great album to end on. '17' has many of the great hits including Hard Habit to Break, Along Comes a Woman, You're the Inspiration and many more.
5. Hall & Oats - Big Bam Boom album(1984).
Hall & Oats had some great hits, and this album included the hit songs 'Method Of Modern Love', 'Out Of Touch'. This was also the first time that the band experimented with sampling.
6. Robert Palmer - Riptide album (1985), and Heavy Nova album(1988).
Brilliant albums ! Robert had some great hits back then with 'Addicted to Love', 'I Didn't mean To Turn You On', 'She Makes My Day' etc.
7. Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche '85 album (1985 ).
This is one of Paul Young's (Pop singer) fav. albums. I love Greens vocals , and he had some great songs like 'Wood Beez' and 'The Word Girl'. In an abstract description of this album, I call this the 'sweets' album. You will see why when you listen to it. Green put alot of nice tunes/melodies sprinkled with toppings of synth keyboards and great vocals !

Poptronixx 1-08-05, 02:55 PM Michael Jackson - Thriller album (1982/1983)
Great album ! I was lucky to see the first showing of the Thriller music video on tv ( Top of The Pops ), and this was Compelling viewing at the time. This was the first time that anyone saw a mini film music video.
I also saw the Motown 25th show - Michael was the show stopper. I couldn't take my eyes off him. The dancing, the song, and singing - the overall performance was great !
Thriller was, and still is the best M.J. album that was ever made.
Good Vibes 2-04-05, 03:05 PM Howard Jones- Dream Into Action
Tears For Fears- Songs From The Big Chair
Van Halen- 1984
