View Full Version : Mistaken Lyrics
Anyone ever had trouble figuring out a lyric or mistaken one for something else?
What about Jimmy Hendrix in Purple Haze - "...excuse me while I kiss this guy"?
Journey in Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'. Is the opening line "You make me weep"? or "You make me weak"?
I know I've made lots of mistakes with lyrics in the past. I'll post more when I remember them.
Does anyone else have a funny lyrical faux pas to relate?
Iluvthe80s 6-13-01, 08:42 PM This one you will find funny. The song, "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure is mine. The part where he goes:
"Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick, the one that makes me scream, she said"......
The part where he says "she said". I thought he was saying "seasick". When I told my sister that she just cracked up laughing at me. She is a big Cure fan and she finally told me the right lyric.
I remember 'Details' magazine used to have a mistaken lyrics section I bet there is a web page out there somewhere
I always wondered what he was saying in the Night Ranger song:
"Motor Ann (??)
What's your price for flight?.."
if that's her name, poor girl.
You'd laugh if you heard me singing to Cocteau Twins. I just put words in here and there because of her indecipherable lyrics.
"At times I've seen you from the- "Orient"? ..no.
I think it's ..auriel? what??!
atleast I know "Wax and wane" thanks to someone else.
"The devil's bite's dirty.
we wax and wane.."
(she says it so fast, the words I was using were pretty bad.)

Iluvthe80s 6-13-01, 11:16 PM I just pulled out my Night Ranger "Midnight Madness" album that has "Sister Christian". The correct lyric is: "You're motoring"....
Here's web page for misheard lyrics.
BTW, does anybody remember the lyrics to the song by Foreigner... "Virgin" Umm, I mean "Urgent"?

Remember the song "King of Wishful Thinking?"
The Lyrics were "I'll pretend my ships not sinking." I knew what the lyrics were, but I preferred to sing them this way; "I'll pretend my shits not stinking." ha ha.

There are web pages EVERYWHERE!! I love the misheard lyrics. Too funny!! Someone misheard "I'm Blue - Da Ba De Da Ba Die" as "I'm Blue - If I Were Green I Would Die". Read that at two a.m. and try not to split a side!
ImSoooSure 6-14-01, 04:20 AM I thought that Sister Christian song was Motor Inn...It's You're motoring??? Wow!
I'll have to listen to the radio for about....2 mins. before I can list some lyrics I get wrong on here. It's been funny reading everyones.
80sTrivia 6-14-01, 08:52 AM My fave misheard lyric is from Irene Cara's "Flashdance": "Take your pants down and make it happen." She's actually singing "Take your PASSION and make it happen"! Also, from Madonna's "La Isla Bonita": "Last night I dreamt of some bagels"... actual lyric: "Last night I dreamt of San Pedro"...

I checked this out Sarg. It is way to funny! Thanks for posting it
Too good. You folks are the best.
Vilji, I was always told that Elizabeth Frasier likes to sing in Scottish Gaelic when she can. I was under the impression that pretty much the whole "Treasure" album was like that. I always thought I heard some latin occasionally also.
I think we can all be forgiven for making up our own Cocteau Twins lyrics.
I just remembered this so I edited instead of posting twice.
Oasis singing "What's the Story, Morning Glory". When they sing that bit:
"Need a little time to wake up. Need a little time to wake up, wake up."
It always sounds to me like they are singing "...need a little time to wake up, wanker."

oh lord! typical of a guy..haha
jk
that sounds more interesting than the original lyrics.
Thanks, Iluv80s for the words to the Night Ranger song. I was wondering about that one for years..I havent laughed so hard in- ..oh, yesterday..lol
Imsoosure, your answer was funny, too!
these are all pretty good.
We should all do a compilation cd of our own lyrics like Weird Al would do. We could
get volunteers from the xchange to sing and play the music..haha

that's great. actually I'm surprised he didn't say 'wanker',,, knowing that one..
lol.
I love "wonder wall" and 'champagne supernova' or -'nover' the way they pronounce it.
I have heaps of these on the hard-drive. Pages of them. Some are quite funny.
i just laughed so hard it hurt. the site of 'amiright.com misheard lyrics. Chili Peppers and Sheryl Crow's were funny. (but a couple were a bit rude) (warning..lol)
thanks for the laugh!
I love these! Good ones Sheibub!
dirt_worshipper 6-22-01, 05:33 PM Corey Heart's Sunglasses at Night...when he sings "...keep track of the visions in my eyes..." For the longest time i thought he said "...keep track of the visions in my ass..." It still sounds like he says that, lol. -Sarah >^._.^<

Saw an article in the Toronto Star on the weekend that reminded me of this old topic.
You can read it at:
Lyrics (http://www.thestar.com)
Search for the word "colitis" and you'll find the article titled "The Ants are my Friends". Gave me quite a chuckle.
nolanbuc 12-23-01, 07:54 AM I wanted to dust off this old topic by adding a few of my favorites. :D
For years, I wondered who the "Dunder Chief" was that did all those Dirty Deeds in the AC/DC song.
From the early 80's: Someone once told me they thought Juice Newton's "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me" was "Love me a little, then fart on me" LMAO! I nearly gagged I laughed so hard!
Anyone else got any? Don't be bashful, I may even introduce you to the Dunder Chief. LOL
wavemaster 12-23-01, 11:35 AM Uhh, thanks Buc...the way you are saying it, I don´t want to be introduced to the Dunder Chief. *LOL* ;)
Usually, being a German means that you can get away with almost all kinds of free lyric interpretation. At least you´re excused. :D
Back in ´84, Depeche Mode released 'Master And Servant'. Needless to say I was among the first to get the 45. Switched on the stereo, put the needle on the record...I couldn´t believe what I´m hearing.
The first seconds are featuring the sampled voice of Dave, "Treat me like a dog". For me, it sounded like "Shitting like a dog"...
I knew that they would never use such profanity in their lyrics...after I found out, I felt pretty stupid. ;)
I know that back in the early 90's, there was a group called The Lighting Seeds, who scored a big hit in 1990 with "Pure", that got their name from a mistaken lyric in the Prince song "Raspberry Beret". I don't have the original lyrics to the Prince song but it's midway through it. But, the lead singer of the band thought it was catchy enough name for his band.

Whoops, didn't mean to post it twice. My bad! :o
Roemello 12-24-01, 06:01 PM Don't worry about it Robyn..whenever a double post happens, just leave it for me..I delete the duplicates ;)
nolanbuc 12-24-01, 08:08 PM I can verify that! I am the king of double posts. :D Double posts don't stand a chance with Roem around! LOL

OMG!!! I laughed for ten minutes straight when I read that Buc! I'm still wiping tears from my eyes! That rocks! LMAO!!!
The only one that comes to mind that I always thought of as humorous is in the song "Armageddon" by Def Leppard. The part of the song that says "pat on the back" I thought always said "pat on the butt":)
I don't know if 80's commercial jingles count, but, remember the cereal Fruity Marshmallow Krispies? Whenever the marshmallows sang "Lots of fruity marshmallow shapes", I always thought they said "Lots of fruity marshmallow shits"

LMFAO!!! Oh, it hurts!! OMG!! Thank yoou so much for sharing that!! ROTFL!!
OK, one of mine was "warm smell of coleet dust" (warm smell of coletus, which, I later found, was a desert flower) from the Eagles "Hotel California". LOL It bugged me for years.
When I think of more, I'll come back. :)

I seem to recall hearing an interview with one of the Eagles (I forget which one) where they talk about this. It actually refers to a kind of weed, if ya know what I'm sayin. ;) :smoky:
Cartoon_Chris 1-01-02, 03:50 PM Rush - Natural Science
"A mechanized world out of hand" sounded to me like "I'll make a nice world out of ham".
"Pour Some Sugar On Me" was pretty much one long mondegreen before I could finally read the lyrics on the internet. You have to ask nicely before I'll go to the trouble of recalling and typing that whole thing though....
You know Van Halen's "Little Guitars?" The lyrics that goes "catch as catch, catch-as-catch-can"? In the early days of the net I found a lyric translation that claimed it went "etch-a-sketch, etch-a-sketch". I swear this is true. I sent a correction to the poor guy.

Please, Chris!!!!:D
VioletFoxx 1-02-02, 01:11 AM Please please Chris! :D Also, that VH lyric thing, we used to sing the etch a sketch version all the time too. LOL!
One of my best friend's mom's used to think the words to Paul Young's Everytime You Go Away were: "Everytime you go away, you take a piece of meat with you". I still laugh about that!
Cartoon_Chris 1-02-02, 02:18 AM Ahhh, ya twisted my arm.
******
Step inside (Walk this way)
To where we say (hey hey)
Livin like a bum, baby come and get it on
Livin like a lover with a red eye phone
Looking like a tramp like a video, damn
Demolition what can a real man (a man)
Rising in the desert and I flash a little light
Television's gone baby two whole nights
Settle down, anytime sugar be sweet
Learning to say this ain't sugar meet
Take a bottle, shake it up
Break the burden, break it up
*got all of the chorus right*
Listen
Red light, yellow light, green light, go
Crazy little woman in a one man show
Little green men again, rhythm of love
Sweet dream submarine Lucy love
(Lucy)
A-this ain't love
You gotta squeeze a little, squeeze a little, tease a little more
Easy operator come, knockin' on my nerves
Settle down anytime, sugar be sweet
Learning to say this ain't sugar meet
You got the peaches, I got the cream
Sweet to taste (s'after me)
'Cos I'm hot (Hot!) So hot
Sticky sweet, from my head to my feet
Well let's take the sugar... a one, one more time
Show for me
***
listening to it again today on my super-duper stereo it doesn't sound that way anymore in some places (the two instances of the world "lover" in the first verse are now clear) , but elsewhere it still sounds like the above to me ('livin like a bum'!....and yes, that means in the video, the echo over the opening goes 'bum, bum, bum, bum....').
LMAO!!!
That is hilarious, Chris. Thanks.
VioletFoxx 1-02-02, 07:13 PM ROFLMAO!  Oh my goodness. Thanks for that Chris!!!
ROTFL!! TY, Chris! The only thing I didn't understand when I heard that song was: Mirror queen, mannequin, loosen up... He just didn't say mannequin right. I mean, I know he wanted it to rhyme, but geez.... No, I never did hazard a guess as to what it might have been. LOL
That was a beautiful rendition Chris!
I never understood the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed". I knew the song, but never even knew the title until a few years ago. I always thought they were saying "How Does That Feel?".
I remember thinking:
"Last night I dreamt of some bagels" 'La Isla Bonita' - Madonna
it should be: "Last night I dreamt of San Pedro".
or
"My name is Dita, I'll be your waitress tonight". 'Erotica' - Madonna. It should be, "My name is Dita, I'll be your mistress tonight".

Join the club, everytime I listen to it, I automatically sing the wrong lyrics in my head, even though I know they're wrong!!

And used to think it was: 'Last night I dreamt of some Dago' and 'I fell in love with some Dago'
And the classic one from OMD's 'Secrets': 'You comfort me, and make me feel it's worth my while'. Listen very carefully to the 'Comfort me' line......sounds VERY rude!
Bryan Ferry's 'The Chosen One' from 'Boys and Girls': 'Swollen Liver, I've been thinking'
:D
I used to think Hall & Oates' "Maneater" went like this:
"Whoa, here she comes, watch out boy she'll chew you up, Ohhh, here she comes, she's a bandleader!"
these are great. I haven't laughed so hard in a loong time. :)
thanks for the Def Leppard lines. those are great.
oh, and the OMD one...where has my innocence gone?
Christine 1-17-02, 10:57 AM Cartoon-Chris, that was hilarious!!! Trying not to laugh, I'm in the library! :D :goofy:
Christine 1-17-02, 11:00 AM I thought the line from Guns 'N Roses - "Sweet Child Of Mine" was:
"Why did she have to die?"
The real line as "To quietly pass me by"!
LOL, everytime I hear the song, I crack up! ;)
Christine 1-18-02, 09:42 AM I just thought of another song lyric:
In Poison's "Nothing But A Good Time", the line was "I just like my fun every now and then".
I thought it was "I just BLOCK my PHONE every now and then." I was so confused. How do you block your phone?? Besides taking it off the receiver, I couldn't figure it out! :D
