ReagansRenegade 8-28-00, 05:27 PM DuranDuran takes place over Bon Jovi for me probably because the Duranie sound was far more rare. I dont know whats going on over in Britain, but sending us DuranDuran was a god-send. It funny, most of my favorite songs were by a multitude of bands- i guess i was susseptable (okay i spelled that wrong) to the whole "what theyre playing your playing" thing that always was and unfortunatly will probably always be. However in the 80s what was playing was the BEST stuff anyway! Unlike now.

Yes!!! "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" was the first cassette I ever owned. Duran Duran absolutely ruled the 80's. Shakey say "Roemello man of good taste!" http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

I have to go Duran Duran first and Bon Jovi second on this. So many great bands in those days though. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif
Jazzmyn
I think all of you have named the best. But, I think Def Leppard ruled the 80s. They released several singles from all of their tapes. They were all over the place! I'm a big fan of Bon Jovi and believe he finished the 80s bigger than Def Leppard. That's my two cents.

Hey Queen_Dirk, I don't think Loverboy was cheesy at all, they were definitely an awesome 80's band and definitely one of my favorites (I've seen them 12 times, and got to know a few of them quite well )
Alot of those Canadian bands were great in the 80's.
Harlequin
Honeymoon Suite
Platinum Blonde

Aldo Nova

You're right, though! Motley Crue should definitely have been mentioned. Although, I would have to disagree. Duran Duran introduced a new sound to America. Motley Crue took a form of music already in existence and mastered it. Two different things. But! They both rocked!!! *headbanging smilie should go here*
------------------
If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
Motley Crue definitely helped to make the 80s the great decade that it was. My failing to mention them in no way diminishes my love of their music and accomplishments. I still think Def Leppard ruled though!

AstroGirl 4-08-01, 04:56 PM I really like:
Bangles
Madonna
The Fixx
Tears for Fears
Duran Duran
Journey
Starship
Pat Benatar
David Bowie
There are more, but I can't really think of them right now. I would say the Who because they are my very favorite band I think, but they didn't do much in the 80s except break up, get back together, break up, and so on and so forth. Plus, their music didn't change in the 80s. I like 80s music so much because it is the first impression I had of music. It was love at first, well...hear I guess.

The Grateful Dead. Hehe. I had a friend of mine that went to one of their concerts. This guy got so wasted that he peeled of all of his clothes, gave away his wallet and told people to follow him and he would lead them "To the light"... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//PSYCHO.gif Sad thing is, from what I understand, he actually did have a group of people following him around. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//GOOFY.gif

relivingmyheyday 4-18-01, 07:31 PM Def Leppard TOTALLY RULES my world! Joe Elliott has such bedroom eyes.. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//icon20.gif It seems like everybody had a copy of Pyromania in his or her pocket during the summer of 84 (or was it 83?)
But Bon Jovi is a close second -- everybody imitated them, with the big hair and flashy clothes. I went to see him like three times. The first time I went I wore a teddy and spandex.. LOL... I remember getting totally tricked-out for the concerts and tripping over my tongue at all the long-hairs http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//icon20.gif *sigh*

My husband & I have a friend that really, really, really likes RUSH. I know that he's in the fan club, possibly a president?? He goes to all their shows when they come to town (going to every single show) and even has a RUSH pin on his apron when he works with my husband and there's a small sign by their schedule that says RUSH. I don't think I've ever met anybody who likes a group as much as him! I have never listened to their music so I don't know much about them.

djdaffy1227 4-26-01, 08:47 PM My favorite artist of all time started in the late 70's but didn't have his first top 40 song until 1980.
That would be PRINCE!!!!
Let's not forget that although heavy metal had its place it was not the only type of music in the 80's, in fact it didn't become mainstream until the late 80's. I think the artists that represent the 80's best would be ones that were around for most of the decade like Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Prince, Daryl Hall and John Oates. Don't get me wrong I know heavy metal has been around for a long time, I'm just saying it doesn't represent the 80's in full. I know Def Leppard and Motley Crue and Bon Jovi have been around for a while but none of them had a lot of mainstream appeal until the late 80's (circa 1987) and I'm not saying metal is bad. I like a lot of it including Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. So please don't write hate mail I just had to speak what was on my mind.
Awesome choices!! Prince is by far one of my favorites, too! I never get tired of watching Purple Rain!

ImSoooSure 6-05-01, 04:43 AM Duran Duran would get my vote! But... and I hope I don't get kicked out of the forum for this....any punk fans? I love The Clash, Ramones, Violent Femmes and Billy Idol.
-that's my friend,,lol. I love Billy Idol and the Clash too. Violent Femmes..Romeo Void.
The Cure is one of a kind, too. Siouxsie, Duran, Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins is prob at the top of my list. It's refreshing not knowing the lyrics sometimes.. and Kate Bush,(I was kinda surprised WutheringHeights didn't mention her. The name wasn't from her song..?) yes, call me nosy.
Aerosmith, Van Halen, and KISS,,hanging over from the 70's.

slave2mysin 6-18-01, 07:07 PM Favs - Guns N' Roses (Slash's guitar work was the best of the 80's), Motley Crue (bit poppy but they were bloody funny), Judas Priest (British metal is the best), Motorhead (okay it's 70's but they were at their peak in the 80's), Metallica (when they made DECENT music), Slayer (fast and brutal - Reign In Blood is one of the best death metal albums ever), Iron Maiden (best band ever to come out of Britain ?). God there are so many other cool bands from that time, but I think the ones mentioned were some of the best.
Metal's not exactly my fave but I seem to remember liking "Princess of the Night" by Saxon. Girlschool were kind of humourous too. How were these two bands received by more dedicated metal fans?
Poison PJ 6-18-01, 11:22 PM Queensr˙che
Poison
Dokken
Mötley Crüe
W.A.S.P.
Shark Island
Bon Jovi
Winger
Ratt
The Cult
Journey
Bruce Springsteen
Kix
Warrant
There's just too many good ones to pick one. Foreigner, Heart, Journey, Van Halen, Def Lepard, 38 Special, Boston, Kansas, and The Outfield, just to name a few.. I could list all night and only scratch the surface.
Under An English Heaven 7-05-01, 05:03 AM Favourite 80's bands-
Duran Duran
ABC
Tears For Fears
Def Leppard
Marillion
The Smiths
wavemaster 7-09-01, 11:46 AM He hee hee...now it´s time to make some people really upset, I think...
I simply hated all Metal/Rock stuff during the 80s !
Be it all British rock or American Glam/Hair, and German rockers were even the worst...and I´ve seen G´N´R live - they sucked like nothing else!
As a typically German child, I grew up with KRAFTWERK...
Okay, let´s get halfway serious - please don´t flame me...:
Nobody seems to like DEPECHE MODE here *sniff*, but I think that they were the most innovating band of the 80s. Their songs were so cool, and with each album they brought something new to the listeners ears which made them truly unique.
Some other bands were only repeating their formula of success, like DURAN DURAN - sorry, I like some songs in particular, but you heard one song, you know them all...
djdaffy1227 7-09-01, 12:07 PM I love Kraftwerk! I mentioned in another topic here (I think it was called Best albums of the 80's) that Computer World was one of the best albums ever. It defies genres. I mentioned that the most success it had in the US was on the R&B charts with "numbers" going to #22.
I also think Depeche Mode has a lot of fans. Dig through some of the old topics and I'm sure you'll find Depeche Mode, whom I also love, out there somewhere.

What do you all think? surely the 80's meant more than groups such as Bon Jovi and Def Leopard or was it just in the UK that different styles and avenues were explored by the groups of the 80's!!!!
djdaffy1227 8-06-01, 12:28 PM Believe me Johnnie. We don't all love those hair bands (It's clear that I didn't care for many of them). They really weren't big until the late 80's. Most of the big glam bands were early 90's. It is not the only form of 80's music in the states but it was a big part of late 80's pop culture. Most people are apt to remembr the late 80's a little better then the early 80's.
most of my favs from the 80s bands were from the UK.
new order

IRON MAIDEN!!!!!
this charming man 1-09-02, 06:48 AM I never really got into rock music, especially mid 80's rock where the most important thing you needed to have was perm lotion, hair mousse and hairspray, if they didn't spend so much time grooming their hair (Bon Jovi and Whitesnake were the biggest offenders), they might have written a few decent tunes.
My two favourite bands are undoubtedly
The Cure and The Smiths, I don't think I could seperate them.
