Nikki_91 9-13-00, 01:53 AM Oh my god..I can't believe I missed best 80's Soundtrack..so many to choose from!
Ok, so first, one should have the soundtrack to "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" That's like a definite must have! You have some Go-Go's, Jackson Browne, and a little Van Halen.
Second, you must have the soundtrack to "Valley Girl" (Volume 1 and 2!!) Intro to new wave on this soundtrack. You have your Culture Club, Bananarama, and Modern English.
Then you have your assortment of Soundtracks..Karate Kid, Footloose, and Top Gun, etc...

Check ya later-I'm outta here!*Nikki*
RetroMan 9-23-00, 10:21 AM Pretty In Pink is a favorite of mine - but my most favorite is the two Wedding Singer soundtracks! great compil's!

djdaffy1227 5-11-01, 01:02 PM Hooray for Pebbles !!! Under the cherry moon's soundtrack called Parade was great too. My favorite soundtrack is Bright light big city. I bought it because it had a Prince song on it not available on any of his albums called "Good Love" it also had "True faith" by New Order, "Kiss and tell" by Bryan Ferry, "Century's end" by Donald Fagan, "Pump up the volume" by M/A/R/R/S and so many other great songs. I also like the Reapo man soundtrack with The Circle Jerks doing "When the s**t hits the fan and the song "Pablo Picasso" who's main line is "Pablo Picasso was never called an @$$hole" it also had Suicidal Tendencies doing "Institutionalized"

RestlessKind 5-19-01, 03:57 PM My Favorite 80's soundtracks are Valley Girl (some very cool new wave stuff in there!) and the soundtrack for Girls Just Want to Have Fun. There is really no singers of note on that but I just always thought the songs were really cool. Also, the soundtrack for 200 Cigaretts is great. It's not from the 80's but has some great 80's tunes on it!
Gosh!! I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Purple Rain!!! It was definatly the best 80s soundtrack!!!
Valley Girl would have to be my 2nd favorite
Beverly Hills Cop had a good soundtrack...
Wayne's World was early 90s... loved that one, though, as well as Encino Man's...
And what about "Heavy Metal"!!!
Awesome soundtrack!!!
Two of my favorite movie soundtracks were "Fame" and "Footloose".

80's Eric 5-20-01, 08:06 AM I can't believe Electric Dreams did not get one mention! I don't think it's the best soundtrack of the 80's(that honor goes to Purple Rain), but it's definitely a great one! Another overlooked soundtrack is Revenge Of The Nerds. I really like the songs by The Gleaming Spires ("Are You Ready For The Sex Girls" and "All Night Party').
Caligula 5-25-01, 09:30 PM my top 3 from the 80's
1) The Last American Virgin
2) Heavy Metal
3)Fast Times at Ridgemont High
my top 3 about the 80's
1) The Wedding Singer
2) Romy and Michelle
3) 200 Cigarettes
I don't know if Kiss meets the Phantom counts as a movie soundtrack ?

lmerickson 6-08-01, 05:24 PM There have been so many awesome soundtracks mentioned here! Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles were two of my very favorites... No one has mentioned "Say Anything" yet! (I'm a bit biased as a John Cusack fan )
"In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel is definitely on my top 5 list of best all-time songs.

Back to the Future
&
Flash Gordon (1980) by Queen
&
A View to a Kill (by virtue of the Duran Duran title song)
Oh yeah, and Batman (1989)for goodness sake!

nolanbuc 6-09-01, 04:04 AM Whoops, I forgot Flashdance (I'll have to admit to owning that one on vinyl)
"Weird Science" -I love anything from Oingo B.
"Pretty in Pink" (New Order (makes great movie music background)
and I have the soundtrack to
"Sid and Nancy". "Love kills" on there is good. And this song,
"I want to be haunted by the ghost of your precious love.."
I still see Gary Oldman as Sid. He was so perfect for that role.

ImSoooSure 6-12-01, 05:00 AM Oh I love Oingo Boingo too!!! I went to their concert here in 1985. It was so awesome. What incredibly fun times. And Gary was the perfect Sid. I just picked that up on DVD.
oh wow! that would have been the best concert! i wish i could have gone with you.
yeah, Gary O. did a great job. He was pretty good in "The Professional" too. My man, Harrison calls him 'scary gary'.The girl was great, too. I wonder why we don't see her in other movies.

Damn, I've been bouncing around all the topics trying to figure out where to put this. Anyway, I'll park it here.
I just got back from a couple of days of meetings in Niagara Falls. While driving back I was listening to some old tapes and came across something I hadn't listened to in ages - the soundtrack to Blue Velvet. I'd completely forgotten how important that film was.
I can't believe I forgot about it and now I would like to retract all my previous posts and record the following:
1) My favourite 80s movie is Blue Velvet.
2) My favourite 80s soundtract is Blue Velvet.
3) My favourite actor in an 80s movie is Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet.
4) My favourite song from an 80s movie is Love Letter by Kitty Lester. Featured, you guessed it, on the Blue Velvet soundtrack.
5) My favourite 80s tear inducer is (Vilji will probably remember this one) Mysteries of Love by Julie Cruise from the Blue Velvet soundtrack (and her work from Twin Peaks makes me pretty weepy too).
That's enough for now.
In the immortal words of Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper): "Heineken!!! F@*k that s#*t! PABST BLUE RIBBON".
i know the song from Twin Peaks. though i never watched that show. that music was incredible. of course if you like Cocteau twins, etc..you'd prob like it.
Dennis hopper is cool. i remember Blue Velvet was a cult film somewhat in my college days. but i didn't see it. i heard it was about bondage and mind games or something. if it's not love,,hmmm..not interested. maybe i'm wrong about the movie.
but i don't think i know the song you mentioned from it. though i've prob heard it.
Poison PJ 6-12-01, 10:04 PM Lets See...
Highlander
Transformers the Movie
And Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
They mentioned "Blue Velvet" lastnight on the awards show. Saying it's one of the all time most twisted, disturbing movies. What in the world is about, I'm wondering?

That's a bit of a harsh description of the film. It's definitely strange (all David Lynch films are). It does deal with the nasty underbelly of quiet towns. But love conquers all in the end. The most memorable bits are definitely from the EVIL characters but they are done so well that they've worked their way into the movie-making vernacular. However, it's definitely not for the squeemish.
Did you ever see "A Fish Called Wanda"? When John Cleese wrote the movie he said he used Dennis Hopper's character in Blue Velvet as a model for Otto (Kevin Klein's character in Wanda). There's all kinds of visual and dialogue references to Blue Velvet in that movie.
so what's the basis for the story line, before I decide to go rent it? "Caligua" type stuff or what?
Caligula? No. Definitely not that bad. Playboy (or was it Penthouse?) had nothing to do with the production of Blue Velvet. Other David Lynch films include, Eraser Head, Wild at Heart, Dune.
Well let's see,
Young Kyle McLaughlin is walking through a field and finds a human ear. He takes it to a local detective with a lovely young daughter (Laura Dern). The two youngsters are fascinated by the story behind the ear and decide to do some investigating of their own.
They discover a pretty nasty story underlying the appearance of the ear that revolves around a steamy night-club singer (Isabella Rossalini) and a serioulsy demented thug (Dennis Hopper). There are some kinky scenes with Hopper and Rossalini designed to present the depths of Hopper's dementia but nothing as obscene as Caligula.
Lots of swearing (Hopper is woderfully over the top) and really good work by some terrific character actors (Dean Stockwell and Brad Dourif come to mind immediately).
Again, it's not for the timid or easily offended. I don't want to make anyone angry so don't watch it if you are easily put off by such things. But it was such an important film . The language and visual design is brilliant. From the pastel colours to the often bizzare and nonsensical conversations this movie seeps through your pores and you'll find yourself quoting from it for ever. You'll also start to see how much of Lynch's work creeps into other directors' films.
Remember, we all see things differently. What some folks see as a "cult bondage film", John Cleese sees as a basis for comedy. You can't have two more different views than that.
Enough. If you think you won't be offended, rent it NOW. Remember, love conquers all in the end and the (fake) robins will fly.
I'm laughing now. Because I had never seen "Caligua" either. For some reason, someone had said something about the Romans and men with men or men with boys. I didnt really listen after that. Who is telling me this stuff? I can't remember.
I don't know how many times my friends and I would watch "Eraser Head". Complete silence from us through the whole movie. Great film!!!
I'm not of the faint at heart. It's kind of like "A clockwork orange". You feel he's the enemy, but you can't help like him and feel sorry for what 'they' do to him.
We would quote lines from that movie years later.
well, since you described the movie so eloquently but interesting..i may just have to see it. I am impressed by Dennis H. as a villain. Isabella seems cool, too. Though I don't think I've seen her in anything.
If you liked Clockwork Orange, you are going to wonder why you didn't see Blue Velvet a long time ago.
GO RENT IT NOOOOOWWWWWWW.
I did see Caligula. Whoever described it to you was right. It was fairly awful.
Well, it's not an 80s film but definitely a fabulous 80s soundtrack:
Does Grosse Point Blank count?
??
you lost me
(but I usually feel like the girl in "Benny in Joon" (without the guy)
just a wee bit out of touch with this cruel, materialistic 9-5 society

dirt_worshipper 6-24-01, 02:40 AM In my opinion, Labyrinth has to have the best soundtrack...David Bowie is a god! He's just so awesome, and the instrumentals by Trevor Jones are wonderful. "Don't defy me!"-jareth

heavenly_1970 6-25-01, 02:14 PM WOW! Way too many good soundtracks from the 80's, but my #1 choice is "The Lost Boys." ImSoooSure 6-27-01, 04:50 AM Which movie Vilji? I want to see it now. Santa Cruz Boardwalk holds grand memories for me too.
it was 'the lost boys'. at the end of the movie, it says they used Santa Cruz and changed the name for the movie.
The comic book store in the movie they changed, too. It was just a store that sold all kinds of cool things when we were there. oh well

whistledog 4-04-05, 02:24 PM Streets of Fire and Night Shift are my two favourite sound tracks of the 80's, and purely co-incidental, are my two favourite films of all time.
The Streets of Fire soundtrack has lots of great songs like I Can Dream About You by Dan Hartman, Tonight is What it Means to Be Young and Nowhere Fast by Fire Inc. and Deeper and Deeper by The Fixx
The Night Shift soundtrack has many great songs like the title track by Quarterflash, the original version of That's What Friends Are For by Rod Stewart and the instrumental version by Burt Bacharach, as well previously released songs like Someday, Someway by Marshall Crenshaw and Talk Talk by Talk Talk :thumb:
lilchinagirl 4-05-05, 12:47 PM My two Favorite soundtracks were for the movie Legend and Dream a Little Dream. Tangerine Dream seemed to be in every soundtrack from the 80's but Legend was the best. The second soundtrack had so many great songs on it, I wore the tape out.
Anything by Tangerine Dream was cool, but my fave was The Blues Brothers soundtrack. Not a bad song on that.
Breakfast Club. My favorite 80's movie and soundtrack.
Rhiannon73 4-15-05, 08:12 AM The Pretty in Pink soundtrack is so awesome! My second choice would be the soundtrack to The Lost Boys! :thumb:
shortcake78 4-18-05, 08:27 PM I think I bought more soundtracks in the 80s than regular albums.
1. Back to the Future
2. Top Gun
3. Back to School
4. Dirty Dancing
5. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
6. More songs from Dirty Dancing
7. Annie
8. Pretty in Pink
9. Raiders of the Lost Ark
10. Cocktail
Poindexter 5-06-05, 03:00 PM 1. Flashdance
2. Lost Boys
3. Summer Lovers
4. Top Gun
5. Bachelor Party (even though the movie was GOD AWFUL!!! )
1. Flashdance
5. Bachelor Party (even though the movie was GOD AWFUL!!! )
Surely some mistake? It's a cult classic, one of Hank's finest hours.
I'd like to throw in something I bought off Ebay the other day - the Rocky IV Motion Picture Soundrack.
I would recommend this to anyone who loved that sort of inspirational rock and picture music, it's totally awesome! :thumb:
loopyroxie 7-12-05, 05:12 AM Err... Labyrinth! Definitely!
"You remind me of the babe!"
"What babe?"
"The babe with the power!"
"What power?"
"The power of voodoo!"
"Who do?"
"You do!"
"Do what?"
"Remind me of the babe!"
That doesn't even make sense. But the song is wicked.
My fav 80's soundtracks are:
Labyrinth
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (the David Sylvian version Forbidden Colours is awesome)
The Edge of Seventeen it is a movie from 1998 but the OST is so good:
1. Right By Your Side -- Eurythmics
2. Small Town Boy -- Bronski Beat
3. Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) -- A Flock Of Seagulls
4. Obsession -- Animotion
5. The Politics Of Dancing -- re-flex
6. Love Plus One -- Haircut 100
7. Destination Unknown -- Missing Persons
8. So Many Men, So Little Time -- Miguel Brown
9. High Energy -- Evelyn Thomas
10. Mickey -- Toni Basil
11. Why -- Bronski Beat
12. Modern Love Is Automatic -- A Flock Of Seagulls
13. In The Name Of Love -- The Thompson Twins
14. You're My World -- Cilla Black
15. Blue Skies -- Lea De Laria
My all-time fave is David Bowie's soundtrack to "Christiane F." (1981). The soundtrack to "The Moderns" (1988, dir. Alan Rudolf) composed by Mark Isham is also fantastic. And I love Ryuichi Sakamoto's score for "The Last Emperor". See the movies first!!
Does anybody mention Flashdance?
Blurs&Stains 9-26-05, 09:40 AM Flashdance & Footloose.
smoothupinya 9-28-05, 04:38 PM Probably "Heavy Metal"...........:apunk:
